That's the only one I've seen. I will try and contact my uncle for more.
Ok thanks! What do you and your family suspect happened to Ione 66 years ago?

  • #63
My husband is Iones son, his Grandfather and Uncle would never talk about her disappearing. We have heard 2 different things from other family members. one is that she worked at a bar and there was a bunch of sailors in that night and she never came home. the other was she was grabbed by some men while she was in her yard so don't know which is true. It was quite the family secret. As for her marraige to Robert Rehwinkle they were divorced before she disappeared, My husband has the Rehwinkle last name but he claimed he was not his father but was his sisters father. My Husband (Dave) has given his DNA to the Doe network about 5 years ago. That is the only picture he has of his mother.

Thank you so much!!! That information could help solve Iones disappearance.

What I've learned:

The Jane Doe 14826 from Gilpin County isn't available. The skull and necklace found were disposed of, although the bones could still be in possession of Gilpin County.

The necklace has been estimated to be rhinestone. Around 1952 this was a particularly noticeable as being slimming, while other necklaces may have appeared big and bulky. A rhinestone necklace like this would most likely have matching earrings, which I don't believe were found. Ione did not have any jewelry that I could notice in her photo. I would love to see another photo of her, or photos of my other family members.

The reason I was able to get any of this information is because the Jane Doe 14826 was a case that had nationwide attention. The "Pyre Fire" is what newspapers called it.

Article:
Woman's charred skeleton found under funeral pyre near Black Hawk

Pyre fires are a ritualistic burning of a body. I always thought them to be religious. This apparently had been done pretty hastily (none of the logs were cut to length and are believed to have been dragged from the mountain).

I don't believe we'll be hearing anything from the DNA testing that was submitted for a few months back. The information posted above was compiled from a few phone calls and Emails that I've placed today. I am not an expert and I cannot verify that the information here is 100% correct.

When I get back to Minnesota (I'm in New York at the moment) I'm going to do some driving and picture searching.

That’s good! I hopefully Iones case is resolved soon!

Based on the information above it appears that Ione will never come home alive. Many people believe that Ione is a homicide victim who hasn’t been located yet. There have been other disappearances in Minnesota that are presumed abductions. Gloria Freida Rieken disappeared in 1970 and then Belinda VanLith vanished in 1974. There may be more cases but maybe the men who kidnapped Ione are also responsible for these abductions which haven’t been solved. Belinda is presumed to have gotten killed by Joseph Crosby and it is also speculated that Gloria May be another victim of his. Iones case is one of the oldest open MP cases in Minnesota. We need to bring attention to her case and solve it. Based on the other stuff I’ve received it appears that Iones MP case was not handled correctly by MN police. Her report was destroyed and the police are likely to blame for the reason that Iones case is unsolved 66 years later. I will provide all links below for information on the other two missing girls as well as Iones links to all MP agencies.

Interesting, does that mean Ione was having an affair that caused the divorce ? And even more interesting, if the family believed she was kidnapped, then how it became a "family secret" , would that make more sense that they actually think she ran away with her lover? That could explain why the family never talk about it and consider it as a family secret ?

I honesty don’t think Ione is a runaway. She likely met with foul play. Her family does believe she was kidnapped and she had a 1 year old son. They said she would not have abandoned him. That is a theory we have discussed earlier in the thread. We need to wait until we get more info.

From what her sister has told us she would have never left her children, Dave was 1 and his sister was 3. According to Robert Rehwinkle they were separated for sometime before they divorced. As for a secret yes it was, my husband didn't even know he had a sister til he was 19 when his grandfather was drunk and let it slip out. We were invited to a family reunion once and when one lady asked Dave who he was, he said Iones son, this lady turned white and walked away, she then was whispering to others and everyone shyed away from him. We just left. I am sure the family knows something but noone was willing to talk about it.

Ione does have pictures in the 1945 and 1946 Winona High year books.
She would have been class of 1947 but there isn't a book for that year available. They are group pictures so they aren't the clearest.

I assume the image above is possibly her senior picture but I'll email the school to see if they can scan the 1947 one.

Does anyone know the name of the bar? she must have had a baby sitter for the children if she worked nights.

I think I can crop the photos.

Well, then the stories of sailors and abducted at front yard maybe just a cover story they told to hide something they knew, hard to believe they need to keep an abduction as family secret, wonder whether someone had reported her missing and whether there was any police report

There was a police report. It was lost or destroyed a long time ago.

Hello everybody :)
Yes, after the initial contact with NamUS, I've received nothing back. Although it could take up to a year to confirm? Either way, ruling out one more name is beneficial. I just hope Ione's case is resolved for Noch and csreh. So glad you guys found this thread and contributed all of the new information. This entire case reeks of police incompetence and the whole deal with the family ignoring at the reunion points to them knowing something about Ione or refusing to talk about the taboo of her disappearance.

Perhaps, like hanpap said, the next step is to find out which bar Ione may have worked in? If anyone knows of any records that are worthwhile to search for this, please let me know.

The sad thing about this case is that Ione likely died the day or night she was kidnapped. I haven’t been able to find any serial killers in the area at the time.
