There seems to be a discrepancy here between 2 reports of this incident...
In the interview Esme Murphy quoted DR:
"Rassier says after he searched the buildings on the farm property and returned to the farmhouse, law enforcement was everywhere".
In Joy's blog 'Dan's Story' Joy quotes DR:
"He heads down the road/driveway and searches the outbuildings. Every one of them. You would think there would be cops everywhere, but Dan said there were not. A helicopter was searching the woods and fields around his house, but as far as he knows, there were no cops who came down into the yard all night...just the few up by the woodpile earlier."
IMO, that is where the confusion in stories comes from. Not sure which version is correct, since they were both quoting DR?
These are my biggest issues with DR:
- Either there were cops everywhere or they were nowhere to be found, DR stated both to be true the night of the abduction.
- DR stated there was a small blue car that sped up and around the DR driveway with a small passenger covering his/her face at around the time of the abduction.
- DR also stated that the afternoon of the abduction there was a gold Monte Carlo that came up and around the driveway as well and stated that if we found the person who drove that car, we would find the perp. With DR's statements on just the cars alone, there should be 3 sets on unidentified tire tracks...not just one that later proved to be Kevin's.
- Although DR LATER discussed these other 2 cars with law enforcement/media, he did NOT MENTION EITHER CAR the night of Jacob's abduction when he called 911 and was told that a boy was abducted from his driveway earlier that night.
- When interviewed by Esme Murphy about why he didn't want to help search and went back to bed, he stated that he didn't want to 'waste his time.' Who says that after an 11 year old boy has been kidnapped from your property? That is the age of the kids that he teaches.
- Not once did DR reach out to the Wetterling family after all these years. He never called, searched, wrote a note or dropped by expressing his concern as a neighbor for what happened on his driveway that night. Not One Time.
- He kept clippings and wrote a journal regarding Jacob's abduction which cops confiscated along with various other items which have not been returned.
- This was a crime of opportunity. The perp had to be familiar with the area. The perp had to see the boys leaving in order to know which way they would be coming back.
- The perp felt he could be recognized and put a black stocking over his face. Who else had a black stocking readily available for this crime of opportunity on a dead end street?
- The perp told boys to run into the woods. It was pitch black. Perp would HAVE to know area in order to know where the woods were.
- Perp was VERY comfortable laying in wait in the dark for the boys to get back. So comfortable on the DR driveway that he walked Jacob up a considerable distance with a gun to his back with no worries that he would be found out by the owner of said driveway.
- Patty Wetterling wrote a letter to DR asking what happened that night, he refused to respond.
