If I correctly recall, DR "knew of" the Wetterlings, although not well enough to know the Wetterling children or their ages. You're correct in that anyone hiding may have overheard their conversation, but why would DR know for certain they were returning. Maybe they were riding to meet a parent down the road, which my kids have done. Bike trips are not always two ways.

DR has a unique very low voice. It would seem the boys would have recognized DR's voice, his stature, his height. The picture profile, too, is of a man who would have been much older, heavier than DR.

I've looked at maps from the time period of the abduction -- DR's property is at the end of a road, the only thing on the other side of his property was Tom Thumb's (where they rented the movie).

To me, it seems strange to think that a man was just hanging around DR's place, waiting in hiding for someone to "happen" by. Whomever did this has given us clues of a degree of premeditation (perhaps minutes, perhaps days, weeks, months or years) - but premeditation nonetheless.

Someone was in the bushes... wearing a nylon mask, and carrying a GUN. That speaks to premeditation!

So to me, this had to have gone one of three ways (though I'm open to more theories if you have one to propose).

-> DR was alone at the farm, and heard the kids coming, ran in to the house or his car, got nylon and gun and hid in wait to abduct a boy on his return. If this was the case, he may not have been certain they WOULD return, but hoped for it, and may have figured that if they didn't return, then that would end his plan.

-> Perhaps DR had a friend over that night? PErhaps someone dropped by to visit him unannounced? (But if no car was there, then WHO? Would have to be very local!). Maybe DR knew the friend was over, maybe he never did know someone dropped in on him that night -- but maybe a person visiting in this fashion is responsible? Could be someone DR knew well, or only in passing -- someone stopping by to borrow something, to drop off something... whatever the reason. To me, if the perp had a mask and gun, I can't help but wonder about whether he had any drug deals going on with DR? Perhaps his original intent was to rob the farm house (the parents were away, did anyone know DR would still be home?).

-> DR's brother lives on the property as well, in a little house just before the farm. Not sure if he did at the time or if this happened later -- but perhaps someone was there to visit HIM that night? Or his family (if he had one back then?). Where was the brother at the time anyhow?? Just wondering.

Also,
About the mask -- it was a piece of nylon panty hose cut off at the foot to conceal facial features. DR was interviewed at one point, and said his mother didn't own any panty hose (and she may not have!) -- but -- the same article has picture of panty hose in the house (bathroom I think?). So if they didn't belong to his mother, whom did they belong to? I'm off to find that article and picture -- its interesting if nothing else.

margaret diane,

You bring up many possibilities, some of which I also have been turning around in my mind, and I'm sure others have also.

Here's another one: a friend or contact of DR's parents who knew the area, the surrounding region and had seen the boys riding their bikes on occasion. He also may have known the parents were out of town. May have often scoped it out and determined where he could hide a car. As people have said, he could have picked up Jacob at the point where the scent ends and carried him all the way through the woods to a car, for example.

Maybe IF DR didn't do it, he may have had company that night who did. Maybe a fellow worker from St Johns, maybe a layman preditor. Maybe DR knows who did it.

Jbrown -

Earlier in this thread some of us were wondering about that as well.

Also, who is to say that only one person is involved?

The night of the abduction, Patty Wetterling ordered a pizza for her kids, and the friend who was to watch the movie with the boys -- she ordered it before she left the house.

So I wonder, did that pizza ever arrive? Were the staff at the delivery place checked out? It is unthinkable that one of THEM might have more info or somehow been involved??

Stearns County Attorney calls items removed from DR's property "evidence" and says that we haven't seen everything that was removed from the property.

Makes me wonder -- if the attorney for the county refers it as "evidence" (as opposed to 'potential evidence' or 'items of interest')... then what EXACTLY did they find, and what made them call it "evidence" specifically??

I have previously wondered why the driver of the car came forward in 2004 -- this is the guy who heard the news on his police scanner, sped to the scene, and beat some of the police to the scene. He saw the bikes in the ditch, told an officer that he'd seen the bikes, and then left, never to be heard from again until 2004. It turns out he came foward after talking to a US Marshall who was a friend of a friend. But... in the article linked above, I found it interesting to note that Sherrif Sanner indicated that, "investigative records showed no sign that the man, who is not considered a suspect, had ever been interviewed"!!

Ok so who did this guy talk to on scene?? How come there is no record of him talking to police or being formally interviewed? I've read elsewhere, police didn't even take down his name or other important info at the time of the crime. It could be sloppy police work -- OR:

What if the guy talked to someone only POSING as an officer?? I hope not! I hope all LE knew one another by name and face -- but -- stranger things have happened right??

Further reading and research indicates that until the driver of this car came forward in 2004 - investigators had NO idea who he was! They didn't have ANY record of him ANYWHERE in their files!!

I found it interesting to note that when he came foward, the driver told LE who he spoke with (so it appears the DRIVER got the name of the LE he spoke with?) -- but there is no record of the DRIVER speaking to LE that night........... so what if....... what if the guy the driver talked to that night was NOT a cop?? He might have impersonated a cop? What if he knew a legitimate cop's name -- and gave it as his own??

I wonder if police in 2004 were able to ask the cop the driver said he spoke with to verify the story?? Just wondering...

who is to say the sheriff is on track? maybe he is in on some sort of cover up.

Glad the Stearns Co sheriff is on track. It seems one of his deputies hasn't been.

40-year-old Sgt. Phillip Jerome Meemken has been charged with 22 felony sexual assault charges and three misdemeanors for providing alcohol to three minors and sexually assaulting them.

This sergeant really looks like the suspect drawing too: http://www.sctimes.com/article/20100917/NEWS01/109170031/1009
Altho he would have only been 20 back in 1989.

Here is another pedophile who went undetected for decades! When police searched his residence, they found articles which denoted a fascination with missing and murdered children (one of whom was Jacob).

I'm still trying to determine if he was ruled in or out as a suspect in this matter -does anyone happen to know? Thanks.

It appears the deputy is married. (Big surprise?) I also appears the victims were member of an Explorer Post. Would that be boys? The sketch, however, is of an older man.

Thanks so much for this link, Margaret_Diane, I had never read that before. I found this part (comments by the sex crimes on children expert) very interesting:

"I had the experience to know that you don’t decide you’re going to go kidnap, rape, and murder a child today. You may start by experimenting with touching the child, or being around children, and you work up to it over a series of years, as a pedophile might. And in fact, the guy that did this had probably been in jail before. We knew or we were aware that there were certain sex offenders that had gone through the system and the Stearns County Jail. But there were no computers back then, and there was no way to search the inmate records, except by hand.

I had gotten to know the head of the Minnesota Security Hospital for the criminally insane in St. Peter, where a lot of the major sex-crime offenders go. He said somebody will commit a crime toward a child, then have three months of feeling empty, and then three months of starting to look, and he’ll do it again in nine months. So all of a sudden we’re putting together time slots.

At the time, there had been several child kidnappings by over-the-road truck drivers, so I took a look at who drove a truck through town.

We also knew that pedophiles sometimes sought out jobs where they could be around children. So we took a look at all the school-bus drivers and teachers and anybody that was around children. You can imagine how delicate that was."

He was ruled out, they decided he was just a creepy dude who was obsessed with the case. Wouldn't surprise me if he had molested other kids at some time tho, he was molested himself.

The explorer group was made up of kids who were interested in a career in law enforcement, it was a mixed group of boys and girls. They haven't stated which sex the victims were.

He probably disguised his voice. Easy enough for a musician.

The kids were scared out of their minds. I am sure the "monster" looked huge.

I'm sure I recall from the earliest reports the kids saying the man had a very deep voice. Because at the time it made me wonder about a man I met through work who was from St. Joe, had a deep voice, and was tall and scary looking. I'll see if I can find a link for that original comment from the boys.

Edited to add link: This is the interview with Aaron where he says the abductor had a "gravelly voice." http://www.startribune.com/local/64675297.html
