The evening of May 18, 1929, Julius Schuch, and his children, Ernest, 11, and Eda (Edith), 9, were home on their 40-acre farm four miles northwest of Waseca. His wife had died two years earlier. John, 21, was away from home, and daughters Ernestine, 15, and Wilhemina, 16, had gone shopping in Waseca.

Also from that article:

It was also troubling that four years earlier, just two miles away, a farmer named Louis Minske was beaten to death with an ox yoke.

“They never found out who killed him either,” Kozan said.

In her written account of the events of 1929, she wrote, “The murderers were never found. Many years later, however, John Ruehl confessed, as he lay dying, to Sheriff Don Eustice, that he had committed the murders!”
