GUILTY MN - Kira Trevino, 30, St Paul, 22 February 2013

How long do you does it take for jurors to deliberate in cases like this one?

Sometimes hours sometimes it can take days. I personally don't think it will take long, especially if the defense doesn't provide any witness's. That is just my opinion though. We also have no idea what the juror's think.

This is so sad, and I guess I don't understand why!

Just spoke to Kira family. So heartbreaking. They don't have her body. So there's been no funeral. Not until trial over. #TrevinoTrial

The family has no closure in so many ways. Heart Breaking! Makes me very very sad.

#TrevinoTrial very interesting to see what defense will do in 1/2 day Monday. Perhaps surprised things will wrap so quickly.

Unless they have alibi witnesses, what else could they possibly present? Oh yes, a horde of people trashing the victim of a horrible homicide through the mud. Because she was evil and was having an affair and didn't love him anymore Na Na Na Na. Just wait and see. Or read.

I'll take some heat for this because I'm not in the lynch JT camp without a trial. I don't know if the judge will allow the jury to consider lesser charges. I would bring witnesses to show no previous physical altercations. Witnesses to show JT was madly in love with her and devastated by her affair. Witnesses to show her callous attitude towards him. Not to vilify her, but to show the dynamics going on. Bring out the fact she texted her boyfriend in front of him. This does not justify what he did, but might make him more sympathetic. I would argue there is not a definitive cause of death and we really don't know what happened. Argue murder 2 an overcharge.
I'll put on my flak jacket and stand back.

EVERYONE deserves a fair and impartial trial based on the facts. There are a lot of things that could help the jurors understand him, his character, and his state of mind and those things matter in sentancing. The charges can only be reduced if the prosecuter will reduce the charge, I believe. The carpet cleaner makes me think murder 1. I do not know all the facts.

Thanks Dogg, I have been sitting here thinking the same thing. I also was wondering if the police ever had another suspect in mind before Trevino was charged.

I know it is up to the prosecution to prove the case. Since we haven't been able to see the testimony it makes it hard to know every piece of evidence. I know the jury has viewed it though. That is who we count on to make the right decision.

I am not trying to convince you of anything. I think we both believe the same thing.

Carpet cleaner was borrowed 2 weeks before murder. They were going to be moving.

Assistant Ramsey County Attorneys Richard Dusterhoft and Andrew
Johnson, and Trevino’s attorney, John Conard, have said they could call about 55 witnesses between them. The sergeant is the prosecution’s 42nd witness, but it’s unclear how many witnesses, if any, the defense will call. Also unclear is whether Trevino will testify, but he must decide by Monday if he’ll take the stand.

District Court Judge Leonardo Castro told jurors that the tentative schedule is to have them return Friday afternoon, Monday morning and Tuesday morning, with closing arguments possible on Tuesday. The jury will be sequestered for deliberations.

McKenzie Anderson, a DNA scientist with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, began her testimony Wednesday afternoon under direct questioning by Johnson. She told the court that several spots of suspected blood from the couple’s master bedroom, home and Steger’s car trunk matched Steger’s DNA.

Prosecutors Andrew Johnson and Rick Dusterhoft reached their final witness on Thursday after over 40 people have taken the stand over the last seven days including Kira Steger's mother, her sisters, her roommate, police and forensic experts.

Soon the case will be in the hands of defense attorney John Conard, and District Court Judge Leonardo Castro has given him until Monday to decide whether or not to place Jeffery Trevino on the stand.

Why would you ask what to do with your wife's things if you thought she was on a drinking binge and missing for two days? So strange!

He told le she was having an affair. Maybe he thought she left him. I think JT is definitely guilty but if his wife was having an affair and did not come home for a couple of days, which she did in the past, I don't find his question that incriminating.

@ChaoStrib Harsh words. But what a stunning end to the week. Didn't see that coming at all. Question now. How does it play w/ jurors?!?

@PaulBlume_FOX9 Yeah, I'm surprised we didn't see/hear more of a reaction out of people in court. Well, enjoy the weekend.

A retired St. Paul police sergeant took the stand Friday in the Jeffery Trevino murder trial.

Trevino, 39, of St. Paul, has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder in Ramsey County District Court.

Retired Sgt. John Wright questioned Trevino after his wife Kira Steger, 30, went missing.

The defense strategy in the murder trial of Jeffery Trevino took an unexpected turn late Friday when his attorney raised the specter that Kira Steger’s marijuana use could have played a role in her death.

Trevino’s attorney, John Conard, showed pictures authorities took of a baggie of marijuana found in Steger’s purse. He then asked retired St. Paul police Sgt. John Wright if marijuana dealers and buyers are robbed with “surprising frequency” in St. Paul.

Wright said they are robbed, but he wasn’t sure if “surprising frequency” was an accurate assessment. When Trevino reported Steger, his wife, missing on Feb. 24, he told police he was worried about her sudden increase in drinking, staying out late and her marijuana use.
