MN - One dead after Minneapolis shooting involving immigration agents, US media report, January 24, 2026

The excuse that his weapon (in the hands of a federal agent by that time) may have accidently gone off and scared them in the heat of the moment) is a weak one IMO because trained LE should be held to at least the same standards as the citizens they are policing.
Unfortunately, I think that is the line that they are going to push. Even more unfortunately, the Sig P320 (I think it was) has gained a terrible reputation for firing unintentionally and Sig has issued a recall - which apparently didn't solve the problem. There are videos of them discharging even while holstered!

You can see exactly where this is going, unfortunately :(

It's taken me about 20 views of the video over 24 hours to work out who's who in the video of the shooting and what's happening.

Today there's a frame analysis on the BBC website and it looks clear. And extremely disturbing. Especially disturbing when considering the statements from the government and POTUS :(

ICE doesn't have the right to murder innocent civilians. <modsnip>
Did I really just watch an ICE guy fire five more bullets into Mr. Pretti after he was already dead or dying and completely immobile on the ground?
This was after the first five shots had seemingly already killed Mr. Pretti and all other ICE guys had walked away from him and there was no one within four or five feet of him.

Minnesota police chiefs seek meeting with Trump

The Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association (MCPA) is requesting a meeting with President Trump, which the group says would be "constructive and timely" in light of the "complex, high-pressure environments" local law enforcement officers are working in "while communities seek reassurance, clarity, and stability."

"During periods of elevated tension, thoughtful leadership and responsible communication are essential to reducing strain rather than amplifying it," the group says. "... Public trust depends on consistent, professional conduct. At the same time, officer safety must remain a fundamental priority, as it is inseparable from the safety of the communities officers serve."

"A constructive path forward is essential. The MCPA encourages greater dialogue among federal and state leaders to support professional conduct that strengthens public safety, protects law enforcement professionals, and maintains public trust across Minnesota."

This is something I can really see tRump doing... he looks at situations like this as a photo op...and he can appear to appease these MN officials.... and he can pretend to "see" the other side.
I actually hope this does not happen.

I think you give the POTUS more credit than I do. Yes he will see it as a photo op but also an opportunity chastise and to publicly humiliate MN elected officials and LE. IMO he will not pretend to see the other side. He will use this opportunity to further escalate the us versus them sort of mentality that has already divided this county.

I sort of hope he does take the meeting because he will only IMO show more of his true motivations behind sending ICE surge to MN and those motivations should give every American pause. JMO

requesting a meeting with President Trump,

I think MN officials have to try everything (but not release their private voter information, etc). The MN police chief said today that this is unsustainable. And it is.

So far the protesters and observers have been great - relatively calm and peaceful - but there is a huge risk that someone is going to shoot an ICE person and all heck will break loose.
It is a really dicey situation. As Obama and Clinton said, they are on the precipice. America is on the precipice.

He couldn’t even bother to travel 2 miles down the street in Washington DC to pay respects to the passenger plane and US military helicopter victims during the collision in mid air over the Potomac river last year. So I highly doubt he will go to Minnesota.

I see your point, but I think the chance to descend upon MN and physically demonstrate the authority of his office or (more likely IMO) summon the chief to Washington to see him will be too difficult a pass for him. JMO.

I agree with you, and I hope he does go because it will definitely show his true feelings and motivation behind the deployment of ICE in Minnesota. He will probably talk about how dangerous it is for him to go there, call it a war zone, disparage all the government officials there and then leave. All MOO

i do see your points. i do.
I would worry that the MN officials will not be as forceful as necessary...if in the WH.

if such a meeting takes place, no matter the location, I think MN officials should be very calm and measured in their responses. I would expect the POTUS to do what he does. I would hope MN officials would let him and in contrast remain very forthright and respectful of the office he holds. MOO POTUS will attempt to raise their ire in hopes he can then paint MN as some sort of insurrectionists poised to start a civil war, thereby giving him an excuse to impose martial law. I pray cooler MN heads prevail in not giving him that satisfaction.

Today (Monday) ..... A judge will hear arguments as state and local officials seek to halt the federal deployment of immigration agents in Minnesota. The case has taken on heightened urgency after federal agents killed Alex Jeffrey Pretti.

Lawyers for the state of Minnesota and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are seeking to temporarily halt the deployment of some 3,000 immigration agents, arguing that it has crossed the line into an unconstitutional and illegal occupation.

That would still leave the question: why did agents (plural) repeatedly shoot?

Why did they keep shooting at a man on the ground?

Indeed. There are what appears to be confrontations between Pretti and and more than one ICE agent, and more than one ICE agent interacts with Pretti. Pretti appears to place himself close to ICE agents on at least two separate occasions. There is physical contact on two occasions. He is described as an "observer" with a camera.

What were the ICE agents doing there? ICE agents were not operating independently. Someone hired them to go there and do that job. That is where the problem lies, not with the individual agents. The protests should be with the person making the decisions, not the person carrying them out ... in my opinion.
Your second paragraph makes me think of excuses made for lower level Nazis in the 3rd Reich: they were just doing their job. Vomit. Not acceptable these days.

Your first paragraph and some other posts of yours make me think of rhetorical questions posed retroactively about ordinary Germans in 3rd Reich: Where were they?? Why didn't they see? How could they not have known??
In Minneapolis neighbours are out on the streets, observing, witnessing, filming, protecting by their very presence or at the very least trying. Yet, you seem to question this!! Would you prefer them to pretend nothing is happening? Or would you suggest they film but from a distance deemed suitable by the Border Patrol officers? The thing there is that BP will only consider the distance suitable if it's far enough away for the witness to not see anything.

That old ‘Fifth Avenue’ line keeps coming to mind. Minneapolis feels like ground zero, where they realize they can do this in public and get away with it. I don’t think he is interested in talking with MN officials in any meaningful way.
