Judge in Minnesota orders ICE chief to appear in court, warns of possible contempt proceedings​

Washington — The chief judge of the U.S. District Court in Minnesota ordered the acting head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement to appear in his courtroom in-person on Friday and explain why he should not be held in contempt of court for violating an earlier order.

Judge Patrick Schiltz wrote in a brief three-page order that the Trump administration has failed to comply with "dozens" of court orders in recent weeks, which has resulted in "significant hardship" to immigrants who have been arrested and detained as part of Operation Metro Surge.

Schiltz wrote that he has been "extremely patient" with administration officials, even though they sent thousands of agents to Minnesota to detain immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally "without making any provision for dealing with the hundreds of habeas petitions and other lawsuits that were sure to result."

Gov. Tim Walz’s office said Tom Homan, the White House border czar dispatched by President Trump to take over the immigration crackdown in Minnesota, had agreed on Tuesday to work toward ending what it said was a “campaign of retribution” against the state.

In a statement, Mr. Walz’s office said the governor and Mr. Homan met on Tuesday morning and “agreed on the need for an ongoing dialogue.” The statement added that Mr. Walz and Mr. Homan agreed to continue working toward the state’s goals: impartial investigations into the killings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents and a swift reduction in federal forces in the state.

The president has made new remarks today about the shooting and he is apparently now against the 2nd amendment to the Constitution. That’s a very interesting stance given his base.

of course, everyone has a bias. we all have opinions, experiences, prejudice. i would look at the victim who is a pro life protester differently, that’s true, but i think and hope i would still take a step back and see that such treatment of any human being is wrong, and also very worrying when it seems to be part of a bigger pattern of violence.

Republican congressman Andrew Garbarino, chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, announced that Todd Lyons, head of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will testify at a public oversight hearing next month.

In a statement, Garbarino announced that Lyons, ICE’s acting director, will appear before the panel on 10 February alongside US Customs and Border Protection commissioner Rodney Scott and US Citizenship and Immigration Services director Joseph Edlow.

“The hearing will provide an opportunity to conduct oversight of each agency and ensure they are fulfilling their duty to protect the homeland as part of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) core mission,” he said.

The committee had invited Lyons, Scott and Edlow to testify before Pretti was shot and killed, but followed up with a formal request on Saturday.

Alex Pretti suffered broken rib in confrontation with federal agents a week before he was fatally shot - CNN​

CNN has learned that federal immigration officers have been collecting personal information about protesters in Minneapolis – and had documented details about Alex Pretti before he was fatally shot on Saturday.

It is unclear how Pretti first came to the attention of federal authorities. But sources told CNN that about a week before his death, Pretti “suffered a broken rib when a group of federal officers tackled him while he was protesting their attempt to detain other individuals”.

Per CNN’s report: “The earlier incident started when [Pretti] stopped his car after observing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents chasing what he described as a family on foot, and began shouting and blowing his whistle, according to a source who asked not to be named out of fear of retribution.

“Pretti later told the source that five agents tackled him, and one leaned on his back — an encounter that left him with a broken rib. The agents quickly released him at the scene.

“‘That day, he thought he was going to die,’ said the source.

“Pretti was later given medication consistent with treating a broken rib, according to records reviewed by CNN.”

DHS did not respond to CNN’s questions about Pretti’s previous encounter or more details about efforts to collect information on protesters.

A memo sent earlier this month to agents temporarily sent to Minneapolisinstructed them to “capture all images, license plates, identifications, and general information on hotels, agitators, protestors, etc., so we can capture it all in one consolidated form,” according to correspondence reviewed by CNN.

So Pretti had a history of interfering with federal law enforcement.
It is also funny the comments about federal agencies collecting information. Reminds me of back in the Obama era when the ATF and FBI used local law enforcement to collect license plate info of people that attended gun shows. Illegal? California complied and worked with those agencies, including ICE.

Can you cite any statues that state blowing a whistle or helping a woman who was shoved down up are legally considered interference in law enforcement operations? Especially point 2, considering the woman was not ICE’s target, just a random victim of LE brutality.

I think there’s a line of thinking where any time a person is within close proximity of a federal agent, they must be “interfering”. It doesn’t matter that ICE agents are targeting schools, daycare centers, restaurants, etc. All places where people are just existing, living their lives. ICE has descended upon this community and by all accounts from people who live there, made it very hard to exist normally. Besides the incident where the agents finger was bitten, I haven’t seen any reports of protestors being violent. But we have many reports of ICE agents being violent, and 2 US citizens dead.
