A missing person report was originally filed for Martin on March 11.

The search for Martin was recently suspended due to heavy snow in the area, but resumed a little over a week ago.

People frustrated about the search effort for a missing man gathered outside Duluth’s FBI office Friday.

Ironically, the group was not protesting the FBI–but rather–pushing the Fond du Lac tribal police department.

Friends and supporters of 31-year-old Peter Martin say they want the tribal police department to ask for the FBI’s help in finding him.

*****
“Try to get federal authorities to step in and help with the case, as well as the Minnesota BCA,” said Jessica Gidagaakoons Smith, a family legal advocate who helped organize the protest.

“And one of my volunteers had already reached out to the Minnesota BCA, and the BCA officer told her that Fond du Lac police refused their help,” she said.

Gidagaakoons Smith said some members say they don’t feel protected by the tribal police and are afraid.

Tribal Police Chief Mel Barney released a statement saying, “Our investigation efforts are supported by highly trained officers, many from the Fond du Lac tribal community, and I have full confidence in our agency and our investigation division to utilize all available resources, which includes outside agencies, to support locating Mr. Martin.”

The FDL Business Committee says that Thursday it activated an Emergency Operations Center to help in the search.

Martin's family held a rally Saturday outside the Gerald W. Heaney Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse in Duluth, where FBI offices are located.

They fear foul play may have led to his disappearance, and they want the FBI to get involved in the search.

"They're not handling this the proper way," said cousin Colleen Martin. "They need actual law enforcement that knows how to handle something like this, and it's not Fond du Lac police."

Minneapolis Star Tribune:

“According to search warrants, an ex-girlfriend who shares a young child with Martin stopped by his home on Rustic Lane for a custody exchange and found the door open. After she called Fond Du Lac police to conduct a welfare check, they found damage in every room. A TV had been smashed and there were holes in the walls. Martin's drivers license and tribal identification had been left behind.

The woman reported him missing two days later. ”

That could be a sign of foul play, but also could very well be a sign of someone having a crisis on their own.

The door is open, there’s damage in every room, the TV is smashed, and there’s holes in the walls - and she calls LE two days later?

From the wording, I got the impression she didn't enter the house when the door was open and instead called LE for a welfare check. They found what they found and probably told her to keep an eye out for him. 2 days later, after no contact from him, she reported him missing.

no she called them to do the welfare check and they found the damage
two days later she reported him missing (likely gave him time to show up)

Details of Disappearance

Martin was last seen near his residence in the Mahnomen neighborhood of the Fond Du Lac Reservation in Wisconsin on March 8, 2024. On the day of his disappearance, he borrowed $40 from a friend, promising to pay her back within eight hours and offering an iPhone as collateral for the loan. Hours later, Martin responded to his friend's Facebook message and said he was waiting for a ride to town so he could cash a check. He has never been heard from again.

On March 9, the mother of Martin's child stopped by his home on Rustic Lane for a custody exchange, found the door open, and called police. When police went to Martin's home for a welfare check, they noticed the television was smashed, there were holes in the wall and spots of blood throughout the house, and Martin's driver's license and tribal identification card were left behind.

He was reported missing on March 11. Days later, police found a black t-shirt and a black sweatshirt with an iPhone in the pocket on Giiniwi Road. In the woods nearby, hanging from a tree, was a black jacket with a white Samsung Galaxy 6 phone in the pocket. Both phones belonged to Martin.

Martin's loved ones stated despite his drug problem, he was not the sort of person to leave home without telling everyone. His case remains unsolved and his disappearance is considered suspicious.
