Savage Man Arrested, Charged with Possession of Machine Gun and Attempted Possession of Hand Grenades

A Savage man has been arrested and charged in a federal criminal complaint for possession of a machine gun and for attempting to receive and possess unregistered destructive devices, specifically hand grenades, announced U.S. Attorney Andrew M.

FBI: Heavily-armed Savage man with extremist sympathies arrested

A tip helped the FBI track down a Twin Cities man with some serious firepower who they say wanted to be a Nazi.

Investigators say River Smith, 20, had a machine gun, access to body armor and was preparing for a violent exchange with police. They also released photos of Smith at a gun range in Prior Lake.

He was charged in federal court Thursday for possessing a machine gun and explosive grenades which were not registered to him. He will stay in custody.

After the 2019 shooting, police recovered an AK-47-style rifle, two loaded handguns, a .22 caliber rifle, along with 15 fully loaded 7.62mm magazines, tactical equipment, and ammunition. A search of Smith's electronic devices revealed searches about Adolf Hitler, Nazis, videos of gay people being killed, and instructions on how to build a bomb, documents say.

FBI: Minnesota man was making arsenal, revered mass shooters

In November, agents saw Smith's grandmother drive him to the gun range and wait in the car while he shot. She had also purchased pistol ammunition for him, according to the federal affidavit.

IMO
Thank you fBI for getting this person off the streets!
I hope grandma gets in trouble too. Seriously something wrong with both of them.
Doesn't sound like bail is set. It justs says being held.

No bail for River Smith, Twin Cities man accused of prepping to fight cops

Savage man arrested buying weapons indicted by federal grand jury

A Savage man arrested in December on weapons charges has been indicted by a federal grand jury.

River William Smith, 20, was charged with one count of unlawful possession of a machine gun and one count of attempting to receive or possess unregistered destructive devices, according to the indictment dated Jan. 12.

Smith was charged with similar counts in U.S. District Court last month after the FBI, acting on a tip from a citizen, arrested Smith Dec. 14 as he was attempting to buy grenades and gun parts from an FBI informant.

IMO
Startribune.com also published the story but it is behind pay wall.

So he was charged is us district court AND federal court. I'm not familiar with this dual charging and if someone knows please educate me.

A man from Savage, Minnesota who authorities say idolized mass shooters pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a machine gun and attempted possession of hand grenades on Tuesday.

The FBI has evidence River William Smith, 21, was preparing for a "violent exchange with police," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office of Minnesota.

IMO
Nothing much new released but glad he pled guilty. Now we wait how long he'll be in Federal prison

Savage man pleads guilty in federal court to the illegal possession of machine gun

SBM
River William Smith, 21, was arrested by FBI agents in December in the Savage Cub Foods parking lot and was later indicted by a federal grand jury on charges related to the illegal possession of firearms.

Tips from citizens concerned about Smith's behavior led to the probe, according to the U.S. Attorney's office. The FBI used a confidential source to communicate with Smith and Smith was arrested after trying to buy weapons parts from the source. The Savage Police Department worked with the FBI on the investigation.

A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date.

IMO
This man was arrested in a grocery store parking lot in an undercover operation.
Another MN case I'm following is Waylon Kurts (there is a thread on him but I'm not sure how to link).
Young men that have extreme views.

'Pro-mass shooting' man from Savage sentenced to 80 months for illegal weapons
SBM
Federal investigators said River Smith was caught while trying to buy illegal gun parts from an undercover FBI agent; during the arrest, police found even more.

Smith pleaded guilty last year to one count of possession of a machine gun.

In describing his client, Smith's attorney Jordan Kushner said Smith has "unconventional ideas and ideologies" but that he's not a mass shooter or terrorist.

But Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Winter that's exactly what Smith would have become if he were not arrested.

In March 2022, Smith described the Mall of America as a "shooting range," and in a long message presented by Winter at Smith's sentencing hearing, Smith fantasized about going to the mall and killing everyone inside.

The FBI was onto Smith after an arrest when he was a teen where they seized all his guns.

Smith held a grudge against police, the prosecution said, and Smith told an informant he wanted to buy auto-sears -- devices that turn regular guns into machine guns.

Even after pleading guilty, the FBI recorded a jail phone call in which Smith said, "Give me 7 years and I promise you you'll find out why I did go to that range so much and why I took that so seriously."

Judge David Doty sentenced Smith to 80 months in federal prison, just under 7 years, for the crimes he committed.

IMO
The jail call scares me the most. I hope he receives the help he needs.
