AMBER ALERT CANCELED: Abducted Minnesota toddler reunited with mother

.......
The Pope County Sheriff’s Office says Victor Ramirez, AKA Benigno Alvarrez, of Big Lake, was booked into the Kandiyohi County Jail for kidnapping.

Authorities say Ramirez was arrested Thursday night following a brief struggle. Investigators found the child after someone called saying that he was in their garage in Paynesville.

The child was taken to St. Cloud Hospital for an evaluation.

Agreed.

I was thinking maybe a guest stayed over and when they were gone, so was Robert - but then I would imagine we would have a vehicle description (of some sort). It's odd, given the usual reasoning for NOT issuing an amber alert is because there is no car/abductor description.

Let's hope they change that soon. Not only does it not help if the person who witnesses the abduction doesn't see the vehicle, it also is almost...counter-helpful, perhaps? - in urban abductions where the abductor might be on foot or, shock horror, takes the kid on the subway!!!!

This "everyone has a car, car car drive drive" nonsense is horrible in every way, but one day a kid going to end up murdered because the cops wouldn’t put an alert out on a kid taken in a city.

Big Lake man charged in abduction of 2-year-old boy that triggered Amber Alert - Bring Me The News

It is a long, detailed article. Some of the highlights:

Victor Alvarez, 31, of Big Lake, has been charged with kidnapping and deprivation of paternal rights.

The boy was being cared for by family members while his mom was a work, Wed. night, 16 March. When she returned home and went to bed, she discovered him missing. She phoned 911 at 4:29 am, 17 March.

The family found a note written in English and Spanish, asking for forgiveness for taking the child. Footprints were found outside the boy's bedroom window. A K-9 followed his scent down the driveway and onto the street.

The boy's father and his family were questioned and cleared.

The mother mentioned a man, Benigno (Victor) Alvarez who was very fond of her son. He bought him presents and took pictures with him. This man wanted to date her, but she refused him. He had been to the home and knew where the boy's bedroom was and also knew the mother's work schedule. He had phoned her 14 Mar and said he was in CA and wanted her to move there. He phoned her several times during the investigation, said he was upset to hear the boy was missing, and said he was driving back to MN.

Manager of the restaurant where Alvarez worked called police Thurs. night and said Alvarez had been seen there with the child at 8:15 pm.

Investigators found clothes the boy had been wearing in Alvarez's home. They stopped Alvarez while he was driving and arrested him. The boy wasn't with him.

At 11:47 a woman phoned LE and said that she had returned home and found the boy in a car seat in her garage near Paynesville.

Alvarez told the police he made a mistake taking the boy from his home without telling his mother, and that he had left him in the garage of people he knew who were not home at the time.

To me, as someone with no psych. expertise, he sounds slightly unhinged!

Online court records show a Big Lake man will be sentenced next year for a charge stemming from a Pope County abduction.

As previously reported, 21-year-old Benigno Alvarez-Gutierrez, also known as Victor Ramirez Alvarez, was charged with kidnapping and depriving another of custodial rights.

Tuesday, Alvarez-Gutierrez entered a guilty plea to the kidnapping charge. Records show his sentencing hearing has been scheduled for the afternoon of Feb. 9, 2023.

While the petition still needs to be approved, the document states that due to a guilty plea being entered for the kidnapping charge, the charge of depriving another of custodial or parental rights will be dismissed.

****************

During an interview with officials, Alvarez-Gutierrez said he made a mistake and had taken the boy from his home. He admitted to dropping the boy off in an empty garage at the residence of someone he knew, but that no one was home at the time. The owners of the residence said they found the boy in a booster seat in their garage and said no one had alerted them of the boy’s presence in their garage.

A criminal complaint states the kidnapping charge carries 20 years in prison, a $35,000 fine or both. The deprivation of parental rights carries a sentence of no more than two years in prison, a $4,000 fine, or both
