MO - 1-month-old girl dies when mother, Mariah Thomas, allegedly places her in oven instead of crib, mom charged - Kansas City, 9 Feb 2024

It does beg the question - How big is the oven and wouldn't you have to remove a grate to fit a child of that size in?
BBM
Yes, unless
  • only one rack was in there, and the other was stored or missing
  • the upper rack was set high enough above the lower one
ETA: going by my own freestanding oven which has 5 shelves, I keep the racks/grates on level 1 and 3 from the bottom

The one-month-old baby was found at her Kansas City home with burn marks across her body, according to Thomas' arrest warrant

It’s unbelievable. I remember way back in the 1970s they would talk about mothers on drugs who put their babies in the oven. As a kid, it horrified me but as I got older I assumed it must have just been rumor and urban legend type of thing. Now all these years later, this horrifying story.
Can you tell us anymore? It would be interesting if this has happened before

Edit: I found references to the urban myth and previous real life incidents

My first thought on seeing the headline was maybe they are very poor and the oven was the only temporary bed they had, and that someone turned it on to preheat without checking if anything or anyone was in there first.
Because I've heard of people using drawers as cribs in impoverished circumstances.
But with reports that she was found in a cribb or a car seat that can't be true.
They can't have been that poor because they either definitely had a cribb, or could afford a car seat and presumably a car and therefore also a crib.
And they probably also had drawers and plenty of other options better than a working oven.

Thanks for correcting me. My point still stands, she is very childlike - maybe the media will reveal more details. IMO, Mariah doesn't seem to function like a 25 year old woman.

I see it, too. When i read the heading, my first thought was the obvious. But having seen her photos, i wonder if it was her first child. Could it be so that chronic insomnia triggered some kind of delirium?

That’s just unbelievable and horrific.
