But... was it proven she was actually on the phone with the BF?The cynical part of me wonders if the BF was behind it all, faking he was on a call with him, thus setting up the mindset that someone else did it, as well as establishing his own alibi.

Kinda hard to fake your transnission falling out in the middle of the road trying to chase her down, but who knows at this point. Rural cops, even on a good day, aren't well equipped for big investigations. There was no technology like we've got now.
