Found Deceased MO - Carol Schulte, 72, experienced hiker, van in pkg lot, near Al Foster Trailhead, Wildwood, St. Louis, 23 May 2022

They moved the search up higher than where she would normally hike after having no luck to an area that would require poles. However, they confirmed the poles were located at her home so they were not with her

I am a little confused.
Is it thought Carol hiked earlier that morning and then intended to be at the School Bus Monitor position at 7 am.?
Is it thought she never made it to hiking after parking the car?
It doesn't seem the dogs are picking up a scent indicating a hike.
Maybe I am misinterpreting what I see.
How close to the School Bus Monitor location is this hiking trail and her parked vehicle?
Are there any large animal predators in this area? Bear, Cougar, etc.
Hoping Carol is found safe.

Black bear territory has been slowly expanding (recovering?) into this area, but it’s rare enough that a sighting would be locally newsworthy. Very occasionally, a mountain lion does move through the outskirts of the St. Louis region, but they are males just moving through. No breeding population. So while not impossible, these two culprits are very unlikely.

I asked on the family Facebook page (linked below) whether she was supposed to work Monday morning and haven't heard back. I looked at the school district's calendar & found nothing that states what date the school year ends.

Updates this morning are informative re: SAR & LE efforts. All the searchers have covered a lot of ground with some areas searched multiple times.

Nearby cameras are being checked & one of her stepsons will be talking to detectives about those results. It's Thursday so the sooner, the better!

The community is concerned & working together well covering trails. Because of that, if she is on the trail system, I think she will be found. The Meramac River is being searched by kayakers.

A meetup hiking group is going out this morning:

Dogs have not picked up her scent. They need some clues as to whether she ever used the trails that day. I see questions about that now in the latest posts here:

Come home, Carol!
For those trying to picture the Meremac/Meramac River, here’s the story. In this part of the state, and especially when it rains, the river is not clear. The river has been up lately and opaque brown, like mud.

Welcome to Websleuths @FrogChair

Do you live near the search area? Have you been on these trails?

I saw a post on the family's Facebook page that the trails near where she parked were posted as off limits from Monday to Wednesday for cleanup due to branches down & poor trail conditions due to storms. Curious if you know anything about that.

TIA

Thanks for the welcome! Yes, I’m local. I walked part of this trail once in 2021, so I can’t claim any great expertise. Branches down and poor conditions sound plausible; there have been thunderstorms with heavy downpours in the area. Had tornado warnings on May 19. Weather is currently cool. Like problematically cool for someone who had been out in it for a long time.
I‘ll also add that plants have leafed out enough now that I think it would be pretty easy to miss something even if you walked quite close to it. We have a lot of brushy Japanese honeysuckle here. If this highly invasive plant isn't being managed within the park, there could be pockets that are rather impenetrable.

My concern about her not making it onto the trails was heightened by posts on the family's Facebook page saying she was a school bus monitor who started work at 7 a.m. That here phone was turned off shortly after that time is concerning.

I hope I am wrong. They are going to start looking on elevated trails because the flat ones have been well-searched.

Come home, Carol!
I see some sources saying that her phone was turned off after the parking lot/trailhead ping. I don’t understand how the technology works. Without the phone in hand, is it possible for LE to know that her phone was turned off versus that it died? It’s safe to assume that her van would have been thoroughly searched inside by this point, correct? The phone is also missing, right? Cell phone coverage can be spotty in some of the parks on the outskirts of the western St. Louis county suburbs, so I‘m wondering if a call going straight to her voicemail on Monday would not necessarily prove much to a caller.
Edited to add: Thank you for any insight.

Someone finally confirmed she had taken the day off work. But there's contradictory posts on quite a few things so who knows? I am wondering who saw her last before she left home and if she has any medical conditions.

Other than abduction, the river is becoming my concern at this point. If we get confirmation she was seen on the trails, I'm afraid she may have run into wildlife or fallen from a ledge above the river.

The searchers volunteering from the community are very dedicated from what I'm seeing. It's a beautiful thing!

Come home, Carol

I’m just wondering out loud.
So, if Carol did take the day off work, she might have had something very specific in mind for that morning.
Would she have had a longer more extensive hike in mind?
Meaning going further on the trail or a different trail that morning, or maybe she did plan to meet up with someone to hike and didnt want the time restraint of the 7 am commitment.
Is there anyone who knows her well that can speculate on this possibility?

Her car is at a trailhead that (from my limited knowledge) leads only to trails that have been or are being searched. Maybe her red van was left there as a red herring (seems unlikely).

Knowing those trails were signed as closed Monday to Wednesday this week due to storm cleanup efforts, did she go on a hike there anyway?

After repeated attempts, this wont play for me, can someone please summarize?
The speaker is one of her stepsons, Tim Schulte.

He says they met again with the lead detective and may organize another volunteer search team this weekend.

He confirms that search dogs, air searches, water searches and ground searches are all ongoing.

He expressed the family's gratitude to all the volunteers and LE who are helping.

Looks like the family is still convinced she is lost or has succumbed to tragedy in that area. I wish we knew what leads them to that conclusion other than her vehicle being found at the trailhead.

[Tim] Schulte said local fire protection districts are scouring the area along the Meramec River and police continue to comb the trail with dogs and drones. In addition, the Missouri Highway Patrol Water Division has been on the river every day since the search began Tuesday.

He said they planned to be on the river Friday, as well.

....
The trail is 5 miles and goes to Sherman Beach and Castlewood State Park. The trail follows the Meramec River.

"We have every reason to believe she is in this area. We just haven’t found her," Greg Schulte said Monday.

Greg Schulte said his stepmother never hiked more than 4 to 5 miles roundtrip. He also noted she never hiked alone, so they found it odd she went out by herself.

And the current is very swift. There are a few drownings in the Meramac river every year.

This is sobering.
And the current is very swift. There are a few drownings in the Meramac river every year.
And an alarming number of those drownings happen at neighboring Castlewood State Park. From Wikipedia: “Castlewood State Park … has a history of fatalities due to the Meramac River. Since June 30, 2004, there has been a total of 12 deaths along the river within the park. Of the 12 drowning deaths, only one was the result of intoxication.”
I find the trail closure information sobering because I think it could decrease the liklihood that she ever departed for a hike on the Al Foster at all.

I agree. There’s the van and one ping from her phone. Is there any proof that she made it from the van to the trail? Or that she was ever there at all? As search results turn up nothing, and info like the trail closure comes to light, I think the original premise of lost/injured hiker must be revisited.

Castlewood State Park is 1,818.77 acres of thick woods on hilly terrain. Searchers miss people in much less unfriendly terrain all the time. Occam's Razor says that she is in the park.

7 miles one way? More likely she's in the Meramac, very unfortunately :(

Also, Al Foster was closed Mon-Wed this week (posted earlier).

If only we knew her plans! If she arrived at Al Foster Trailhead and saw it was closed, would she have risked it alone?

Did she meet someone at the trailhead and leave in their vehicle for another hike?

I don't think there is a "simplest answer" here. I really don't.

Come home, Carol!
