A body was found several miles down river today. No identification released yet. Someone else slipped and fell in the river in nearby Castlewood State Park. That person was rescued but is in critical condition.
Gosh, that's awful on both counts. I'm curious which way the current runs there. If you were at the trailhead where Carol's van was found, would it be flowing east toward Castlewood State Park?

According to my Google search:

"The direction of river flow in the basin is highly asymmetric due to the presence of the Ozark Dome to the south. Almost all of the rivers and streams in the basin flow northward, but the Bourbeuse River and the main branch of the Meramec River flow to the northeast."

So, yes Castlewood State Park is to the north-east of the Al Foster Trailhead, so there is a possibility that it is her body they've found.

Thanks! It looks like Arnold, though, is quite a ways southeast and if a body were to have been transported that far by the current, say from the trailhead area where her car was found, it'd have to go through a lot of twists and turns esp in that area just north of Arnold toward Fenton where it could wind up in what looks like large inlets or pools. I wonder if the body found in Arnold is someone who drowned in that immediate area.

There were searches in the area today.

The Meramec flows towards Arnold where it empties into the Mississippi. St. Louis County is sending police, so they may think it is her. She disappeared in St. Louis County, but was found in Jefferson County.

Arnold?! Oh, no. That's miles away. I'm not sure where Arnold came from. I didn't mention it myself.

Castlewood State park is only about 6 miles east of the Al Foster Trailhead.

The river flows east.

There aren't too many twists or turns in that part of the river, and 6 miles isn't that far for a body to wash along.

You're right, you didn't mention Arnold, but when I looked up the other body that was found who is yet to be identified, it appears it was in Arnold. The 19 yr old in critical condition fell in near Castlewood.

Ahhh, I see.
Well, I shall say a prayer for these 2 souls. So very sad. RIP.

Oh goodness, how scary! I hope they pull through.

According to the family’s FB page, the body found in Arnold has been positively identified as Carol.

“MONDAY UPDATE:

We met with detectives this evening. They confirmed that the body recovered from the Meramec River near Arnold this evening has been positively identified as Carol.

This is an ongoing investigation.”

Wow. This is terrible news! Her body either traveled the river a very long way from where her car was found or she was put into the river closer to where she was found. Or [insert theory here]?

Of course, the river has been described as dangerously high right now.

RIP, Carol
Condolences to her family & friends

I can't help wondering if there is any possibility that Carol might have self-harmed? I know a lot of people go to places that have fond memories for them to do this.

Carol did a few little things seemingly out of character that Monday morning:

1. She went to the trail on her own, rather than meet up with somebody (as far as we know).
2. She ignored the maintenence signs.
3. She phoned work to say she woudn't be in that day.
4. She switched her phone off.

I hope I am wrong of course but I can't help feeling that all these actions were leading up to something.
I don’t know Carol or what was going on in her life. But based just on what is known of the scenario, yes, I think this could be a possibility.
It's an interesting point about the workers on the trail @FrogChair.

It doesn't seem that any workers were around when Carol parked up or surely thay would have told her the path was closed due to maintenance? Or possibly they hadn't started work that early in the morning?

Also, has it ever been said who found Carol's minivan? Was it the trail workers or the police?
I don’t recall seeing who found the van. I guess I thought a friend or family member knew to look there for the van because they knew that she was going to Al Foster and became concerned when she didn‘t come back. But maybe I’ve filled in the blanks inaccurately. just read that her body was recovered downriver. I’m sorry this wasn’t a better outcome for Carol and her loved ones.

I’m sure an autopsy will be done. There are lots of unanswered questions about the day she went missing.

This article from Channel 5 states “The official cause and manner of death would be determined by the Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office.” The article seems to be saying that it wasn’t thought to be a drowning but I don’t know if that could have been accurately assessed that quickly. (?) The article also says that her body didn’t show any obvious signs of injuries. I feel like her family and friends have been through a nightmare this past week. I‘m not sure what to hope for for them at this point.

She didn't drown & there are no obvious injuries?

I guess we will have to wait for cause & manner of death. Not sure how the two possibilities mentioned can be determined by anyone other than the medical examiner.

ME will determine whether manner of death is natural death, accidental death, homicide, suicide, or undermined.
