Yes, that's what I was thinking. I can't conclude that Gypsy is uneducated without more info. My son has been home-educated his entire life and just took his 11th grade standardized tests (first time he has ever taken a standardized test) and he scored in the 99 percentile across the board in all areas. I don't know if DB provided for Gypsy's education, but it makes me uncomfortable to read that Gypsy was uneducated because she was home-schooled. If she wasn't actually provided with an education, which is absolutely possible at home, then she wasn't home-schooled; rather, she was truant.

As a former HS mom (10 years, 5 kids, from kindergarten to 11th grade) I tend to notice how HS'ing is brought up in the most heinous cases as a detail of the person's life. As if to say, "OH, and they were homeschooled too!" to paint them with this brush that HS'ing creates these anti-social fruitbiscuits that can't function in society. It always ticks me off because all it does is feed the myths about HS'ing that have been debunked 100 times over.

The #1 question was always "aren't you concerned about their social skills?" To which I always replied: "YES! I can't get them to shut up. They'll talk to anyone of any age, about the weather, sports, politics, movies, religion, music, natural disasters, agriculture, etc." I wasn't kidding, either. It's quite common for HS'd kids to be able to carry on an informed discussion with people of any age, about a wide variety of topics. It's the exception to the rule to have a kid who is anti-social or socially awkward, as a direct result of HS'ing. They'd be like that if they were in public school as well because of who they are, not how they learn.

I have spent the better part of today on this thread starting from the very first post. After falling off the merry-go-round repeatedly- "this can't be real;how could this happen ;this can't get any worse-i have hopped off and tried to make any sense of this horrific situation.

There will be no happy fairy-tail endings for anyone in this sad story. Is Dede the victim or the abuser ? Is Gypsy Rose (and thank you fellow poster for the GR song ;another OMG moment of is this for real?) a scheming lying mastermind of the killing of her mother or the product of a drug induced wheelchair bound child who never got to experience real life and independence? Should she be held responsible for her boyfriend stabbing her mother or does he be punished alone for his action even as we can see he is not mentally stable either?(watching porn and touching himself in mcdonalds?!) How about the family who "knew" but appear to have done nothing to stop the con? The Doctors, and there had to be many -did they do their jobs or was it so easy to fool them too.All the people who gave to the family do they feel hoodwinked for being helpful and kind? Like i said no winners here.
And when i got to the end of the thread and thought it could not get any worse- we bring in the Duggars ! How is there any way to degrade these girls that are VICTIMS by dragging them into this abyss of hell that has NOTHING to do with them. I get that this case makes many of us question what is the black and white of this case and the grey seeps in everywhere but for the love of god-can we leave innocent victims of an unrelated case out of here on this victim friendly site?

Its beyond crazy to think that in this day and age of technology advancements that something like this case can happen. I've been reading for days now trying to wrap my mind around how this case is even possible.

By no means is Gypsy retarded, I would love to see psychological testing as well as IQ testing. Unfortunately I fear she may have been trained so well she could throw off the results of those. It is possible to throw off an exam, I personally know someone who has major issues but yet can con the medical staff every time, after all a good con artist is a good con artist.

Prison will never serve this child well, a state mental hospital would serve her best. People in the prison setting could clearly hurt and take advantage of this child. While I believe she's advanced in some areas there are many that she is not and that would include how to get along in society.

I'm very interested to learn more about this story as it unfolds. It seems the past couple of days the media is more or less repeating itself.

This woman was either making her daughter pretend to be ill, or actually making her ill.
Everything she did appears to be with the intention of keeping her that way.
She had no intentions of Gypsy growing up and moving out.
No intentions of Gypsy getting a job, getting married or being a mother.

I am a bit surprised her education is even being debated, WHY would she have had one?
WHY would Gypsy NEED an education for the life her mother had planned for her?
What motivation was there for her mother to provide her an education? None.

Did she think this particular BF was weaker than the rest and would be easy to manipulate or was he her one and only, and she really did see him saving her from this nightmare?

I feel like all of the Disney princess BS contributed to her warped perception of love and the damsel in distress thus her strange FB activity with BDSM.

For the male neighbor that drove her to the ER for the male friend a couple of years ago, did this neighbor know it was GB and did he know of her supposed conditions or did he think this was just a young woman freaking out over her BF?

I know he said she was wearing a wig but had he seen her in her wheelchair? I do not recall if this neighbor was next door or just on her street. If he was not next door, maybe he did not know her story?

FWIW I have met homeschooled kids, public and private school kids with strange behavior and difficulty communicating with peers and adults. There are bad apples in every bunch. It is not exclusive to any style of education.

I read something and think it can't possibly be true, then I find myself reading a MSM article that reports it as fact. I hope a solid investigative reporter ends up working on this case. I am beginning to think that even MSM is reporting rumor.

Sounds like this was both the case of Munchausen by Proxy and Malingering, meaning mother did it both for attention and for financial gain.
While it might be an extreme example, it's not a unique case of Munchausen by Proxy and Malingering by any means. So these type of parents fool the doctors and other unsuspecting persons to get attention, and gain financially.

Did you notice the spelling of DD's name in her mother's obit, "Claudine"? And how old was DD when she died? Wasn't she 59 as well? If so that is a very strange cowinky dink imo!!!

In June 1997, GB would've been 5 about to turn 6, could DD's mother's death be what triggered this ball rolling? I wish we knew how or what the mom/grandma died from. Maybe DD learned something about medical treatment or different medicines while her mother was sick.

I was thinking the exact same thing but I haven't seen a confirmed DOB for DD. However, I could have missed it since I caught up on this entire case in one day! I was just wondering if her brother who died had a rare disease. I had a brother who died as an infant before I was born. My stepmom had a brother who died of bone marrow cancer when he was 16. Very different situations when it comes to sibling perspectives, if that makes sense.
