Letter from Jay's mother:
11/16/72
Dear Col. Hackaday.
On August 4, 1972, when my son PERSONAL DATA did not return by 7:30 PM I informed Troop C of St Louis County of who he was with a PERSONAL DATA in a red MG Tennessee license & no age 25 years -from Camden, Tenn.
On 9/5/72 I called Troop C to see if they'd found the car or my son & there was no file on him at all. They were given a complete description of "Jay" & all the other information. I went out when they didn't write out a report on him-he is 15 years old-4/17/57
They would not put out an all status bulletin on this man & can. He also had a 14 year-old girl with him. She is back home due to the fact that she called home to see if the F.B.I. was after Jim.
I was informed that if he got into trouble-that they would let me know--or if they found him dead or wounded! I was informed today that he is in trouble by the telephone company-using a fake charge card from L.A. , Calif. operator.
I have never heard from him personally. I have tried desperately to find my son and keep him out of trouble. To come home or find out what kind of environment he is living in-there is no one in the state of Mo. who would help me.
Now what happened when they find my son? Its been and still is sheer hell for me. I have one one son & one daughter. He'd given me only two times a little trouble. God only knows how much the phone bill is-by 10/2/72 she said it was $37+
Will Troop C pay the bill to keep him out of a detention home? If I hadn't tried with everything I know to do to find him, I'd say I was to blame, but who do you turn to when the F.B.I., State Highway Patrol, Jeff. County Police, Juvenile officers, Pros. Attorney, Furtow (?not sure on that word) and Sargeant Slater of L.A. Police force will do nothing to help you? Most parents don't give a damn-I do!
Believe me if he does get into serious trouble, there will be one of the nastiest articles in all the papers I can possibly put it in I got from authorities in the state of Mo. I think people should know they are trusted by these so called law officers for whom we are taxed to pay their salaries. The answer I was given by all was "we have dozens of runaways everyday". He was taken from my yard on 8/4/72 at 12;30 pm and I did all I could. What happens now?
A very broken hearted mother who asked for help and received nothing.
PERSONAL DATA.
