Aren't connections great :happydance: But I wonder why the other 2 arrested don't have any people calling in favors for them

I hope they thank their lucky stars and stay home or learn how to peacefully protest.

This guy should be denied bond for that hideous hairdo alone

I'm @stlcountypd waiting for Chief Belmar to talk. St. Louis County PD is taking over security detail in #Ferguson.

Belmar: it's a challenge for a 54 member force to handle level of activity in #Ferguson

Belmar: I'm going to have commanders down there on a daily basis. They will have authority to manage crowds and enforcement. #Ferguson

Belmar: one of the challenges has been getting info out to protesters and community about arrests etc. 1/2

Belmar says that they plan on having media updates late every evening.

Belmar: this will be ongoing as long as we need it. It will protect the rights of protesters. #Ferguson

Belmar: bc #ferguson protesting is in a public area we have some discretion in enforcing ordinances and violations.

Belmar: tone we are setting in #Ferguson is important.

Belmar: some nights there's not a lot going on, some there's more.

Belmar: I can count on the support of #Ferguson pd and other munis. I don't foresee anything like we saw before.

Belmar: I hope by being able to establish a media presence things will be more transparent. #Ferguson

Belmar: this would be a challenge with a force of 186 let alone 54. #Ferguson

I really love the tone of this. It reminds me of when my sisters and I were younger and behaving unruly.

After a certain point, there would be what we now fondly refer to as a "Coming to Jesus meeting"

That meant, enough is enough, you can't act this way anymore. The gig is up!

So the new Captain in charge, Belmar, is already saying he is taking a softer stance. I wonder how that is going to work for him?

I know... I know *raises hand*

At least one of these arrestees was arrested last week as well. Those arrested last night were part of a group called Millennium [ or something like that.] They are the frontline hardcore instigators. So now they have this one arrest. If they come back and break the same laws tomorrow or the next day then it gets more serious with each arrest. So the bond does not matter that much to the cops. it is just getting them in the system that is important.

I first saw this name, Millennium, in the media today? Where did that come from and what do they mean by that name? They name themselves that, or did media give the group this name?

Belmar says protesters will notice more "transparency" from cops. Says just bc there's an ordinance they can enforce doesn't mean they shld
...If it could infringe on 1st amendment rights #ferguson

oHOH , sounds like Belmar is going to give them lost of leeway.

Oh good grief, one step forward, two steps....

I hope you are right. But it doesnt seem to me that is what he is saying. He seems to be throwing the FPD under the bus and trying to appease the protesters. He said " just because there is an ordinance against something, doesnt mean you have to enforce it if it affects protestors first amendment rights.'

So it sounds to me like he was rebuking the FPD for making the arrests. Hate to break it to him, but that is only going to ignite the violence, not tamp it down. Being a 'nice' police officer is not going to win him any favor with this mob, imo. It will only allow them the confidence to get more

I think if the media would go home, so would the protestors. JMO

lol. Been there, done that! (Preacher's kids get lots of "Coming to Jesus" meetings! Also lots of "I brought you into this world, I can take you out!" meetings from the "not-preacher" parent.)

I only know of it from the livestreamers. They introduced the protestors one night, and Ashly, said she was part of a group called Millennium, made up of local activists that are out there every night.

IIRC, it was also used in an article posted earlier today, I think?

ETA: Maybe it was a tweet, not an article.

I predict they will all be right back there tonight, same as before. I have heard some of them on livestream, bragging about being arrested 10, 15, 2o times before. So this is no biggie. Just a misdemeanor.

I wonder if there were any stipulations for the help they received from their 'connections'

I would agree with that if not for the fact that a lot of the protesters are self proclaimed media with cellphones

He'll find out tonight, I guess

BTW, what happened to the protesters plan for the "sleep in" at FPD?

Although 13 of them already took part in it last night. :floorlaugh:

Tonight ought to be interesting. Whats the weather like? Because if it is a nice night, on a weekend, it is likely to be crowded again. And lots of media due to last nights arrests. And now the county cops are in charge. And their chief said they are not going to arrest for any old ordinance violation. They are going to 'respect' the protestors rights and be 'transparent.' So I assume that means he will make his officers wear name tags tonight.

So does he expect these peaceful protestors to stay calmly on the sidewalks and break up and go home at 11 pm?

It'll be interesting to see if & how the protesters treat the St. Louis Cty. police differently

The City officers have been out there as back up quite often. They are treated with scorn as well.
I am not sure how this new procedure will work. I assume the protestors will continue to congregate at the FPD station. So the city cops will have to travel there. And if there is a surge and they need back up, who else but FPD to do so? So I think it is going to be the same cops but the billing will be different. The St Louis division will foot the bill. But I don't think the situation will be much different

Per ^ this link^ the press release,

"St. Louis County Police Department will assume command of the security detail regarding protests in the City of Ferguson. On Friday, October 03, 2014, ... A lack of resources and manpower were the main driving force in Chief
Jackson’s request."

IOW, it is not St. Louis City Police 'assuming command' re Ferguson protestors.

FYI
IIUC the City of St. Louis is (more or less) a county in and of itself.
St. Louis County has its own Police Dept.
Within St. Louis County, there are ~90 municipalities, meaning cities and villages.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Louis_County,_Missouri Scroll down to bottom of page for listing of them.

Of those ~90 total --
- some (guessing 40-50? Feel free to correct ) have their own PD's and
- some contract w St L County PD, or another municipality to provide police services for them.

I said city but I should have said county. My mistake. But my post still reads the same. There have been County PD at the protests since day one. And in fact, the county was the source of the rubber bullets and tear gas. NOT the FPD. lol

My take is that he's warning them if they are violent, nasty, vocal, in-your-face from the get-go, do not expect the officer not to enforce the ordinance you are breaking.
