The article didn't really go into why that would help the defense.

I can speculate that one reason is that the more times the witnesses tell their stories, the more discrepancies there will be. And then they'll have more discrepancies when they actually testify under oath. Every discrepancy helps create doubt about that witness's credibility. Enough doubt, and it adds up to reasonable doubt.
