5. The police uses military equipment from the Department of Defense

The Ferguson Police Department is part of the DoD 1033 program, which distributes surplus military equipment, including automatic weapons and heavy armored vehicles such as MRAPS, to local police departments across the United States. Law enforcement agencies in St. Louis County received 12 5.56 millimeter rifles and six .45 caliber pistols from the program between August 2010 and February 2013 and Ferguson is one of those agencies.

A small sample of the types of items issued in the past to participating agencies are aircraft (both fixed wing and rotary) and four-wheel drive vehicles (such as pickup trucks, blazers, ambulances and armored personnel carriers). The ambulances are used for mobile command vehicles and search warrant entry teams. The armored personnel carriers are used for S.W.A.T. teams along with victim an officer recovery. Ballistic helmets and vests are issued for officer safety. BDU clothing (including Nomex fire retardant), boots, wet weather and cold weather clothing, canteens, and web belts are some of the types of field gear items issued for marijuana eradication. Binoculars, radios, camcorders, and tv/vcr combinations are used for tactical and intelligence gathering operations. Information technology equipment such as desktop and laptop computers, printers, and servers have also been issued.

What do we do then?

I don't understand your question.

Transparency. Freedom of Information Legislation.

His name should have been released but due to the alleged death threats it was put on hold..

Since Ferguson has a calm over them, Chief is releasing his name...

And why do you think Ferguson has a far higher crime rate today than 20 years ago?

Morning William,

Does it? I haven't read the latest crime statistics for Ferguson. So it has a higher crime rate per capita than it did 20 years ago?

Well thank goodness for the release of the name!! For a moment there it looked like the media was going to have to find some other story to focus on.

More blood coming in the water. Perfect for their viewership.

What "certain group"? When "certain groups" are marginalized, brutalized, and treated as second class citizens for long enough then it is only common sense that anger will eventually be unleashed in acts of retaliatory violence, especially when PEACEFUL outlets - like protests and non-violent acts of civil disobedience are met with military vehicles and snipers.

And lest anyone think this kind of retaliatory violence is only confined to one "certain group", let me remind you of not-so-long-ago acts of retaliatory violence on the part of Catholics in Northern Ireland (similarly marginalized), as well as riots of various marginalized immigrant groups here in the US throughout our history, back Ito the 1800s.

Our son is in management/civil service at our local Marine Base here. They have been refurbishing equipment for sometime and sending them to different law enforcement agencies all across the country.

I really think it is a good thing because so many police agencies nowadays are hurting for funds and don't have the money to upgrade their equipment.

I am confused. From the very start I thought I heard people say he was shot in the back.

I am really ready for the facts to come out in the AR.

IMO

yes, that has also been said, the shot in the back is what Mike Brown reacted to as he put his hands up and attempted to get to his knees...the chest and head shots are alleged to have happened after the officer got out of his car and emptied his weapon into Mike Brown...which is alleged to have been 35 feet from the police car...

I think the actual report will clear some things up one way or the other.

In some of the other cases it was determined that the eye witnesses didn't see things they thought they saw due to the gravity of the situation happening at the time.

If shot in the back I just cant see how he would be able to do anything but topple over on the ground on his stomach especially shot from this distance. The first shot must not have been fatal and maybe grazed his side or something and that is why he was able to hold his hands up.

I haven't looked at the video that closely of him laying there afterwards (too sad for me) but I don't remember seeing a gunshot wound to his back. Did he have blood on the back of his shirt or was it all pooling around him from the underside?

I haven't watch tv at all concerning any of this. Well let me take that back. When it first happened I did but I felt the media was trying to incite the passions of the protestors so since then I have only watched some of the protest online. So I have seen none of the eye witnesses being interviewed.

Have any of the eye witnesses said he was shot in the back, Lovie? tia

The young man with him, Dorian Johnson and the other witness Tiffany, don't recall her last name..

They claim after Mike Brown broke free from the officer's tussle through the car window, he shot while in the car, as Mike Brown was running away.

The ME's report will be crucial here. If that officer after a threat is no longer there, running away, then shoots, steps out of his vehicle to empty his weapon into the chest and head of Mike Brown, who had his hands raised in surrender, he needs to be arrested for murder..is my belief

What do we do then?

I am really hoping and praying that cooler heads will prevail and this doesn't ignite the anger and rage all over again.

I also hope and pray they have seen to it that this officer and his family is fully protected and in a very secure place.

I believe justice is what the family is seeking. I don't believe anyone wants harm to this office but rather have him arrested if indeed wrongdoing did occur or a bad shoot...of course you always have those rogue folks who will want vigilante justice, I pray doesn't happen..

We don't even have all the facts, yet, and therefore, I won't vilify this police officer. Not until more information is gleaned, and not from a witness who saw fit to call news stations, rather than help an injured person on the ground, or call 911.

JMO

And I would like to note, I grew up in the 'hood. I know that police don't always fight fair. However, I won't rush to judgment, NOT YET. So please don't presume that I'm necessarily on the officer's side. I just want truth, transparency, and safety for all. That's all.

OBE, I didn't see any obvious blood on the back of his shirt in the picture I saw. jmo
