It's also an extremely biased opinion in that he refuses to acknowledge that Dr. Baden has confirmed the fatal shot was fired while Brown was moving TOWARD the officer. The "hands up in surrender" is an opinion, not a fact confirmed by any forensic evidence that the public has seen.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Dr. Baden has said anything anywhere near that definitive. IIRC, he said that shot could have been while MB was charging OW with his head down, or while MB was falling, or while he was standing or kneeling with his head bowed down.

How is it racism? There are white communities with crap schools. That is why you get a job, pay taxes and make use of whatever education is available. I've not heard anyone saying they will improve themselves and move someplace better.

it is racism because the schools' students are predominantly minority. The purpose of desegregation--and forced busing--years ago was to allow children living in poverty to attend schools that had nicer facilities and higher quality educational programs. Schools are funded through property taxes. People in poverty don't own the property therefore they don't pay the taxes. Every child, no matter their race, deserves the same quality of education.

I do not blame Mike Brown for his academic failures. In that regard, he and every other child are victims.

Bull..IMO money isn't the issue.

Education starts at home, it requires commitment and involvement from parents.

I am a huge believer that it starts in the family. I also think that these broken homes, where the kids are bouncing around, places those kids at an extreme disadvantage and also makes them likely to repeat that situation as an adult. It's a vicious circle that can be broken but it isn't easy. Just like I keep telling my daughter that she's going to end up marrying someone just like her dad and there's not a thing she can do about it no matter how much she consciously tries. Poor girl.

And so the kid gets a poor education and grows up to get a pay nothing job, can't afford to move out, doesn't make enough to pay more in taxes to better the school district, has kids of his own that end up going to the same schools and gets the same poor education. Rinse and repeat.

I live in New Jersey ...but I'm fairly certain what's done here is replicated all over. the grand jury can meet in secret locations....it was often the case during high profile and organized crime investigations. I'm not talking about the next town or two over...I'm talking like 50-60-70 miles away.

as far as I know as a local, they meet in Clayton every Wednesday - there's been no indication of a change in standard protocol for the StL County GJ

Uhhh....a customer that happened to call the police could NOT prosecute as they weren't victims.

The owner was apparently willing to press charges initially.
Yes, I know that. Customer calls, officer shows up and talks to any available witnesses along with the shop owner. My point was owner never called. Maybe because he already knew they were on the way, IDK. I'm saying at that point it was out of his hands, he couldn't "Not" be willing to prosecute legally, it's tobacco.

Why would it be announced ?

The whole point is to protect the integrity of the grand jury. And that includes it's secrecy.

Found this:
The location of the grand-jury proceedings is secret, as are the names of the members, so the public will not be able to attend. Magee says these members were chosen by a judge and have been on the job for about two months.

And therein lies the problem: no kid will be able to achieve educational success without help from teachers and educational programs designed for them.

There is no excuse for providing children sub-standard schools. Doing so IS an act of racism. That totally is the fault of the State of Missouri and its legislature. A superior educational system and special education programs require money, plenty of money. iow, the State of Missouri needs to raise taxes and give every child a quality education which is their right. Since they can't seem to do their job, I hope the DoJ asks a Court to order it.

Wow! Are you a resident of the State of MO or the County of StL? Do you realize how much money is spent on public education when many families choose to send their kids to private or magnet schools?

Starts at home way before school . . .

Ah, found it. I knew I read this recently.

I think this link is allowed even though it's a blog, because it's a news blog? If not, sorry mods, please delete:
http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/da...grand_jury_term_officially_ends_wednesday.php
"the grand jury will proceed to meet in special session after its four-month term ends Wednesday.
...
"There are twelve of them, so the meetings will probably be held at different dates and times to accommodate their schedules," says Magee."

I'm glad they won't be meeting on their regular Wednesday schedule. Less ability for the instigators & activists to stage riots specifically to pressure them. Also will help keep them anonymous.

If you are familiar with Milbank at all, his opinion on this case is extremely predictable.

"In New Jersey I think we pretty much proved money had nothing to do with education.
Prior to 2011, the State of NJ did not release the total amount spent per pupil on schooling. Since the Abbott original ruling in 1985, New Jersey increased spending such that Abbott district students received 22% more per pupil (at $20,859) vs. non-Abbott districts (at $17,051) in 2011. [3]

Although key proponents of the measures express optimism that continued spending will eventually help advance students performance, middle and high school students have not improved. For them, the program has been characterized as "a huge failure".[4]

RFT is as reliable a source as any around here -- Thanks!!!

USA Today - Aug. 21: "McCulloch told KTRS radio that it could be mid-October before his office has presented all of the evidence to the grand jury, which convenes on Wednesdays. About two dozen protesters Wednesday gathered outside the St. Louis County Justice Center in Clayton, where the grand jury meets."

I hope that means where grand jurors generally meet, and not this particular one.

Those schools may be minority but there are impoverished white schools as well. Maybe not in ferguson or St. Louis but surely those are not the only children of importance?

An OP-Ed from any msm source is like a blog post. It's a personal or editorial opinion only.

Libraries? There's internet access maybe. It keeps the kids off the street. If you walk into your house and it stinks does it make more sense to toddler it up and scream and demand it be fixed OR is it better to find out where the problem is coming from and clean it up, throw it out or further investigate.

I don't disagree but parents do hand-off their children to schools. The school takes over as "parent." All educational facilities and programs must be of equal quality, that's the law. Quality requires money for facilities, special education programs, teachers. Parents who can afford to relocate out of a poor school district will do so, leaving the impoverished children behind and a "segregated" sub-standard school results. They, in turn, produce underachieving boys like Mike Brown who become thugs and girls who become pregnant. And the cycle is doomed to repeat. Parents can have the best intentions at home but they can't control what goes on at a school and the influence of other children upon their children while they are at school.

It always boils down to money.
