“My insurance agent told me that looting is considered terrorism, and my policy didn’t cover terrorism,” Downs, 58, of Ferguson, said last week.

Downs said that nearby business owners have confided in her that if rioting resumes, they will not stand idly by.

“I think you’re going to see people with guns guarding their businesses next time,” she said.

I hope people take advantage of this opportunity but will not be shocked if turn out is underwhelming. :(

A majority won't turn out for the job opportunities but they will show up for the free food and toiletries. The jobs that these people need to sign up for is to clean up the mess they made while looting and destroying their neighborhood and town. THAT is one of the best ways to prove that they are decent people who have a work ethic and care about their community.

Well MO is one of top states regarding firearm ownership, and a whole lot of folks bought new weapons and a bunch of ammo last year.

This is really turning into a disaster for everyone in the community. I can't understand how the insurance company can get away with classifying looting as terrorism, and then not covering it.

To qualify for a terrorism designation under the federal law adopted after the 9/11 attacks, an event has to cause losses of $5 million or more. As of April 2014, Marathon bombing claims for property and business interruption and amounted to $1.9 million, according to a state report.

Terrorism covers damage to your property or losses to your business that occur as the result of terrorist acts. The Treasury Department certifies events as the result of terrorism or not for insurance purposes. Across the country, around 60 percent of businesses have terrorism coverage.

I think it might be considered civil unrest and not covered. Anyone know?

The good news is, is if they do shut it down then the council members don't have to listen to unintelligible screaming and threats for 3 hours.

I believe the term is "Domestic Terrorism".

According to a memo produced by the FBI's Terrorist Research and Analytical Center in 1994, domestic terrorism was defined as "the unlawful use of force or violence, committed by a group(s) of two or more individuals, against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domestic_terrorism_in_the_United_States

Insurance companies will cover terrorism but it is under a separate rider, I believe. Same as if you had something on your property that was dangerous you would have a separate rider which would up the price of your insurance. Most people do not need separate coverage for terrorism but if you wanted to pay for it you could have it.
