Ok, I saw an episode of Brain Games regarding expert intuition of law enforcement personnel some time ago that came to mind recently regarding Officer Wilson.

Scientists have discovered a second type called expert intuition, which is the sort that comes from special training and experience. Studies of nurses in the 1980s, for example, revealed that those who had been in the profession for a long time tended to make better judgments and to do it more quickly. In a study published in the journal Science in 2011, researchers examined the brains of expert Japanese chess players and found that they utilized different regions of their brains while playing than amateurs did. In particular, they had more activity in the precuneus area of the parietal lobe, a region associated with visualizing images and episodic memory. When they needed to come up quickly with a move, activity surged in the caudate nucleus, where goal-directed behavior is rooted. The researchers believe that the experts’ intuitive skill resulted from a circuit that they had forged between the two regions from many years of training.

Here's part of the clip about LE expert intuition.

In essence, the episode says expert intuition allows LE to more quickly/accurately observe and act on information than laypeople, in determining a suspect as an example. Makes sense to me, and reinforces why laws allow for what the officer reasonably believes. Not only did the "for no reason" witnesses lack all the information Darren had at the moment he fired, but they also would not be as skilled at evaluating the level of risk or need as an officer.

Moo

PS There's more about LE intuition via google.

Meh. Can be turned right around in fairness. Could bolster the argument that OW recognized MB wasn't a threat. Additionally, what kind of training has OW received. Something tells me if he were tops of his class he wouldn't have been in Jennings and then passed over by the County to land in Ferguson.

IMO it comes from experience.

Anyone see this yet? OW going to testify. He looks good and great to see him in uniform.View attachment 59269

Glad to see it doesn't look like any lasting effects to his eye. Mean that seriously. Unless it was the other eye, which I can't see.

Not sure I can post the link I found this but it was posted by anonymous with a nasty comment about look who is back OR something like that.

Who the heck is anonymous lol

It does look like it's still bruised/swollen

IF anything was broken, the bruises could definitely still be visible.

When I broke my nose (not saying it's what happened to him) I had the bruises for quite awhile.

Well, in catching up, amazing how different people can look at the same picture and see different things. I'll defer because I'm getting old and my eyes are going.

Speaking of eye, has anyone found any closer up videos yet of the day of the shooting? You know someone zoomed in on OW because he was the shooter. Someone zoomed in to ID him. I'd still like to see those videos.

You can tell that from a photograph?

When the GJ reaches a decision does it have to be unanimous?

Found this
http://criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-procedure/how-does-a-grand-jury-work.html

However, unlike the vast majority of trials, grand jury proceedings are kept in strict confidence. This serves two purposes: It encourages witnesses to speak freely and without fear of retaliation. It protects the potential defendant's reputation in case the jury does not decide to indict. - See more at: http://criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-procedure/how-does-a-grand-jury-work.html#sthash.02A87iTg.dpuf

Grand juries do not need a unanimous decision from all members to indict, but it does need a supermajority of 2/3 or 3/4 agreement for an indictment (depending on the jurisdiction). Even though a grand jury may not choose to indict, a prosecutor may still bring the defendant to trial if she thinks she has a strong enough case. However, the grand jury proceedings are often a valuable test run for prosecutors in making the decision to bring the case.

If the grand jury chooses to indict, the trial will most likely begin faster. Without a grand jury indictment, the prosecutor has to demonstrate to the trial judge that she has enough evidence to continue with the case. However, with a grand jury indictment, the prosecutor can skip that step and proceed directly to trial.

But it does make them look unethical or inept. Which is a dumb thing when you're holding a presser to restore faith that there is a serious investigation. Same as telling people it was about jaywalking. That was pretty messed up.

The only thing the protestors want is blood. I don't know the true reason behind his statements and I doubt that anyone else can say they do either.

I'm not sure but didn't OW live in Jennings, therefore he worked in Jennings? When they closed up the PD there, I thought they place the cops where they are needed in the surrounding areas. It worked that way when my dad was a cop in Dellwood for 20 yrs. I was surprised when he came home one evening and told my mom that he was sent to work in Pine Lawn because they were short PO's. Or, maybe OW didn't want to work for STL County? Who knows?

I thought he lived in Crestwood which is South St. Louis County.

At the very beginning of any investigation, SOME of the facts are going to be incorrectly reported. It ALWAYS begins that way. Fog of War, and all that.

Except the "Fog" describes what is going on during the "war" or incident, not after it.

I think it carries over. The war was not over. It's still not over. lol

He gave the wrong number of feet, but it is not a crucial bit of information. He would have no reason to lie, because it does not matter how far away the SUV was from the body. It has no bearing on the shooting. The crucial info is the distance between OW and MB. So I think it is a big to-do about nothing.
