And this article says he was arrested for murder. Updated an hour ago.

http://www.kjrh.com/news/local-news/amber-alert-girl-10-allegedly-abducted-by-stranger

Ok but as I read more it looks like police haven't confirmed?? I am so confused. If the parents have come out and said it, what is LE waiting for?

I have no idea. Has to be a reason, we just can't figure it out.

I wonder where the body was found? The article says evidence of foul play was found around the residence, so could she have been found there?

Sounds to me like he wasn't too afraid of being caught, he was in the truck at his house. I bet she was dead within an hour after the abduction, so I doubt if an Amber Alert would have helped, even if it had been put out immediately, because he wasn't on the highway heading out of town. LE always thinks of a perp trying to get out of the immediate area... not sitting out on their own driveway.

I wish they would say where her body was located. If they've already charged him with murder 1, then they know for certain she is dead, so they should confirm it.

How terrible that a child can't walk two blocks in their own neighborhood in the daytime. I thought it sounded like she may have recognized him and may not have considered him as being a danger. Since he was a teacher, what kid would even think of something like that?

Lie detectors are unreliable. Why wouldn't a criminal background check not be enough?

Because most sex offenders ( citing gavin debecker ) have dozens if not more victims before ever being caught. So if you are a SO and not caught yet, no one knows and you can be working around 500 potential victims all day long and no one is the wiser.
Do you believe this guy woke up one day and decided to swipe a child or that he had been getting away with being a pervert all these years ?

ETA Sorry n/t . I am not necessarily advocating a lie detector . I am advocating that there must be some way to keep sickos out of schools.... I do not know what that answer is but this has happened too many times ( or similar ) and the idea of perverts cruising the halls where our children are innocently and completely unaware of danger, is just a bitter pill to swallow. Sorry if I sounded short with you ! There must be a way to keep them away ..........

Ok criminal background checks are NOT ENOUGH to hire school employees ! They need to do lie detector and psyche evaluations before hiring. This is sick and unacceptable and I'm not faulting the school itself, but I am faulting the system of 'not intruding on someone's privacy ' before a hire. A simple 5 question lie detector about their LIKES and DISLIKES would be easy enough. F*** this CO********** creep. I 'm very concerned about other potential victims. ISS kids are already at a disadvantage ..

You and I both know that there is absolutely no way a lie detector is ever going to be legally allowed as part of a screening process. Not with the current technology.

I don't know what the answer is here.

Does his picture/description ring a bell? I remember back when I was still daily checking on the Iowa cousins that there were other kidnapping attempts in the area with a man with a mustache and long grey hair. It's been awhile but my memory is usually pretty good about stuff like that. MO is right below IA. Ring a bell to anyone? I can't search now but I will later. Hmmm...

It's sad but now I'm wondering who else is missing in that area he could have been involved in. He's a teacher, who would suspect him?? Sick POC.

Was he registered? Why and how could they miss that?

At his home last night around 830pm.

Has it been confirmed that this is in fact HIS home? I have found 2 different addresses for him, but neither is this residence.

Well, I think the answer is, this is exceptionally rare. I read a stat once that jagged sidewalks kill more people (by causing horrible bike wrecks and causing runners/joggers to trip) than children killed by stranger abductions.

Horrible as this is, it's rare.

From everything I can find no and he has never been arrested or convicted of a sex crime before. The school in my opinion, is not at fault.

  • #352
So he was a teacher and a coach? Was he registered sex offender? What ????

No he is not a RSO.

The only record that I have seen mentioned happened 24 years ago in 1990 when he was charged with possession. It may have been pot and a misdemeanor.

So, according to this, SPD issued the information to the MHP within an hour, but MHP did not issue the Amber Alert for another hour. So it's not actually LE's fault, it was the MHP who caused the delay. And since these alerts are usually put out on billboards on main highways, it probably didn't help, because he didn't take her out of Springfield.

I have to give kudos to the neighbor who witnessed the abduction, and for getting the plate# and his description, because otherwise this perp may not have been found as soon as he was. So sad for this to happen, but she may have recognized him and didn't think he was a danger. You just never know who people really are till something like this happens.

My prayers for her family and friends, this is going to be hard for them for a long, long time.

I'm just smh at your post. How can you say "it's not LE's fault"?
MHP IS LE! Plus,, Springfield PD has full authority on their own to issue an Amber Alert. They do not have to wait or hand over details to another LE agency for that agency to issue the A/A.

SPD should have had that A/A issued within the first 15 minutes! Not 2+ hours later by MHP!

On the other note, I see everyone praising the witnesses. Quite frankly, I think the praising of them is excessive, to say the least. If I saw a 45-ish yr old man driving down the street 4-5 times, then pull near a 10 yr old girl, and hear him trying to coax her into his vehicle, you can rest assured I won't just be sitting there in the garage "witnessing" it and jot down his plate number afterward. I'd be up outta that chair and in full run towards him to see what business he had with that little girl.

Do you all think it's ok not to even "get involved" at a higher level, when it comes to safeguarding children on the streets? Just sit there and watch an abduction without moving an inch prior?

An article I read said public records indicated he owned the home.

It was confirmed by his neighbors that he did in fact live there for about five years.

I heard the amber alert last night and had a bad feeling. The gave a description of his truck and part of his license number. I find it odd that he went to his residence where, as it turns out, the police found him.

Does he have a tie to Oklahoma? They extended the alert there. Makes you wonder why if they already had found him.

I read those stats too but I really question how accurate they are since so many children/minors go missing and their cases are never solved. Until all those cases are solved we really don't know who the perpetrator really was.

I think it happens more than we would like to believe it does.

You're right. It had to do with the white van epidemic. Man with mustache/long gray hair, and some even sited a woman with the man.

I'm confused, KY3 just said they called LE to confirm the amber alert had been cancelled to be told their source was a valuable source but their info is incorrect and the amber alert has NOT been cancelled.

If they had found the body why isn't it cancelled? Could they have found 'A' body but they have not been able to formally determine its hailey?

The family are confirming they have found the body, LE may be doing this at 11am but KY3 just said as of now the amber alert is still active.

Police arrested Craig Michael Wood on suspicion of first-degree murder. Police located Wood about 8:30 p.m. in his vehicle in his driveway at 1538 E. Stanford, where he lives. A search for Hailey then started in the area around Bennett Street at National Avenue, near Phelps Grove Park, the Springfield Art Museum and Mexican Villa restaurant. About 35 police officers were involved in the search, which resulted in the discovery of evidence of foul play in the case.
