I completely agree. This would fall under the category of "belief there was a crime in progress" occurring - and you don't need a warrant to bust in and search in that case.

It was confusing trying to sort out the details of that news conference, so this may be wrong--but it was my impression that they possibly did do an initial "cursory" look (which may have included breaking the door down) and what they saw from that determined they needed to get a search warrant fast (for the more involved search).

Because the 4th ammendment that is supposed to protect people from search and seizure with out probable cause (and a warrant) also protects the bad guys too.

Yes I know...But she could have still been alive.

I'm just upset right now.

Makes me angry that people like this C.M. Wood are hired in schools. Don't they do any background checks on teachers they hire ?
I always assumed all schools did at least some kind of check on their teacher's previous employers, etc.

Rest in peace, Hailey. You are with the angels and no one can harm you now. But you deserved to have a full, long life !

I can't answer for the Springfield School District, but the district that my husband works for does criminal background checks as well as fingerprint checks (paid for by the applicant) before you can even substitute teach.

My heart goes out to all the witnesses, law enforcement and supportive services, everyone and especially this child's family friends and other loved ones,

This is going to be a tough one ....

It also protects the integrity of the investigation too and that is the most important thing. IMO

I am sure they did do checks but if this was his first offense and he had never been arrested before how do you stop someone like him from getting a job with children? Even if he didn't work in a school he would have found a victim somewhere.

I'm sure they did. He probably was either never caught or this was his first offense. When I was a kid and my dad would get mad at us kids having to go to the bathroom on a long car trip just after we'd stopped, we'd say, "Well, you have to START having to go to the bathroom sometime!" This monster had to start sometime, get caught sometime, etc. I fear for the horrors they might find about his past crimes :(.

Since the murderer borrowed the truck, careless LE might easily have jumped to the conclusion the owner was guilty, disbelieved his "I loaned it to somebody" alibi, searched his property, and generally made his life miserable. It wouldn't be the first time LE developed tunnel vision about an "obvious" suspect.

Except they were given a very good discription of the kidnapper/murderer.

They said at the presser that they did a cursory search of the home and they did not find anyone in need of assistance.

To me that means they checked and did not find Hailey alive. They then obtained a search warrant to do a more thorough search that led to the discovery of her remains.

Background checks only indicate past convictions and arrests.

Have you found a source that shows he had something that would have shown up in a background check? They're not personality detectors - you have to have been convicted or arrested for something to show up.

BBM. Exactly. Unless he had something like stalking, child abuse, etc... pop up, there was no reason for the school district to anticipate that he would do something to a child. This isn't the district's fault. This is Wood's fault.

Same here. To even tutor at our library, work at a daycare, preschool, or be a regular weekly volunteer at a school in my state, you have to be have a background and be fingerprinted, which would have turned anything up.

I've seen several cases recently where the witnesses have been criticized. Makes me wonder if people DO NOT come forward for fear of this. It sounds like the couple did everything they possibly could do. Without them, this guy could still be out there (or in school today... shudder).

I would not think he was associated with the 3 missing Springfield women, I would think he would stay with children. Has anyone sleuthed his background? Was he married? Children?

i wonder if his preferences have changed over the years..those girls were much more mature. i certainly don't doubt that this man has committed crimes before.

Some serial killers are opportunists. For example Ted Bundy. They don't necessarily have a specific age requirement just the desire and act when they see an opportunity to. Like this poor baby walking down the street.

Seems like a lot of pervs can have a preference but when an opportunity arises that is outside of their preference, they still act on it. :(

If only :(. I'd be shocked if any schools did not do background checks these days. I have my clearance just to be allowed to chaperone field trips. My mother, a senior citizen, had to go through crazy clearances, including a physical, just to volunteer in her own grandchild's classroom (my nephew, different school).

Of course it does happen that clearances are done improperly or overlooked (google Matthew Burton Nicole Bennett), but as a parent, I have to believe most are following the rules :(.

Do we know where he was before 15 yrs ago when he started to work at this school? He's not a young man. He could have been active for decades now . :( Hoping this brings some closure to another family or two at some point.

I wonder if he was at work yesterday?

reason I ask was the mention by the reporter of the 911 call around 3pm re: attempted abduction near a school (<----eta: this was in the presser)

I also wonder when he borrowed the truck.
