Kathryn Wall on twitter says Wood charged with first degree murder, armed criminal action, and child kidnapping.

From what I've been able to deduce from reading about this, it's not protocol to WAIT 2 hours, but just takes about that much time minimally to get all the info accurately gathered and put in the system. I agree--that time really needs to be shortened (especially on obvious, violent stranger abductions like this).

Here's one source where I read that:
Thank you. IMO, that makes no sense for it to take that long anywhere except in bureaucracy, but that explains it all.

Crime scene techs found a bullet casing in the basement.

She also had marks on her arms consistent with having been tied up.

Hailey had a gunshot wound to the base of her skull.

We will have to agree to disagree on the blackouts part of this. Anyone who has an alcohol problem to the extent that they blackout can not be trusted that they did not do something during that blackout they don't remember that could be dangerous to another human being. That includes children. JMO.
How would his employer know about his issues with alcohol? I do not know how extensive a crim check is in the States.
I do know in Canada most places including schools require a crim check which only shows things that the person has been convicted of. If you are working with children a vulnerable person check is done and that will only show if you have been convicted of any offenses relating to children.

They wouldn't know about his alcohol problems from the background check. Even his DUI was plead down, I think? They wouldn't know unless he told them.

The blackout information bothers me. I hope that he isn't going to try to plead mental illness or something similar to get out of all of this.

I was going by this article posted a couple of pages ago, which shows he had convictions that should have shown up, plus his own statements that he worried about his drinking. Yes, he had no convictions recently, but this would have kept him away from children in our area. I realize that may not be the case elsewhere.
Suspect in past told court officials he had troubles with alcohol, once studied criminal justice

http://www.news-leader.com/article/20140219/NEWS01/302190101/Craig-Michael-Wood-HAILEY-OWENS

"Three convictions in Wood’s past — the most recent more than a dozen years ago — show issues with apparent substance abuse as well as a history of blackouts.

His most recent conviction was in 2001 for illegally taking of wildlife. Court documents say Wood used an unplugged shotgun while turkey hunting near Ritter Elementary.

A 1990 conviction, for possession of marijuana, reveals that Wood described some relatives as “a bunch of boozers” and himself struggled with alcohol. He said his parents never touched illegal drugs and did not drink to excess, but he described a more distant relative as an alcoholic.

He told officials at a court-ordered drug education program that he had had experienced 40 to 50 blackouts by the time he was 22.

He also described a past conviction — not detailed in the drug program assessment included in court documents — for careless and imprudent driving. He told officials he had originally been charged with driving while intoxicated in that 1987 case, but pleaded the charge down.

“Craig reports worrying about his drinking,” the assessment report notes. It also says Wood told drug program officials “but not so much with the dope because I never had any trouble putting it down.”

He also told officials he had “ a reputation” in high school and was suspended once."

OMG IN HEAVEN THAT NASTY SOB.
He doesn't deserve a *&^%^&* trial. imo

How will Hailey's parents get through this? Lots of prayers.

trash bags -tote...this makes me so mad, that I can't see straight. Let me guess, he will use the "blackout excuse."

I'm by all means a paranoid, hyper vigilant parent. 90% of the time I walk my daughter to class and pick her up from her classroom. The other 10% of the time I park right outside the school and watch her walk in/out.

There are many kindergartners that walk to and from school. I think this is absurd, I keep an eye on a couple of them as they walk part of the route I take to drop my daughter off.

At what age do most people allow their kids to walk to and from school? I don't know that I'll ever be okay with it. Once she has her own car she can drive, until then I plan to drive her.

It seems, based on no statistics and only on cases I've followed, that most kids that are abducted by strangers off of the street are 8-11 year old girls.
I am 100% the same way...my girls are 11 and 9 -the 9 year old my own Haley Bug - they don't play in the neighborhood, even though this is a sleepy little area not well known in town....I see so many elementary children walking ALONE, not even in a group, walking to school - it just FLOORS me....even older girls walking/jogging with headphones/earbuds on, that coud easily be thrown into a van with it coming from behind and them not even knowing what was about to hit them. I am a native Floridian and I was allowed to walk to and from school and go out and about in the neighborhood. I recall in elementary school there was a flasher reported that was at the edge of the elementary school on afternoons - I never saw him and I don't think he was ever caught.

That was Denise Amber Lee. Another person who SHOULD have been saved, had everything worked the way it's supposed to.
This was down just south of me and IIRC she had family/dad works in LE down here.....it was a debaucled situation.

There's nothing about this guys past that makes him at risk of harming children, IMHO. On the surface, stealing a turkey and simple possession is something that a large percentage of the population probably share in terms of a 'record'. Seriously, this describes my brother, my neighbor, your pastor. The blackouts and having family members with alcohol abuse issues are also very common. I don't see where the school "dropped the ball" or missed any glaring red flags. He just doesn't fit society's profile of a predator *on paper*.
As frustrating as it is, I have to agree....a little pot or some drinking does not a killer make..that is a really hard reach, many, many people smoke and drink, more than most would think.

This is just heartbreaking....truly. (not that every other case isn't)

Probably because I am a member of this site - i tend to be more skeptical than most. I would have called out to Hailey and asked if everything was ok, do you need help etc. and started walking toward her - if they could hear what he was asking they had to be close, why would an adult ask a child for directions and not other adults that were in the direct vicinity? That would raise a flag for me...

and I am in no way trying to insinuate any fault with the witnesses, thankfully they got all the info they did and we now have the scum bag in custody.

I am also wondering if there will be any children from the school coming forward. I do not think he could have been around children for close to 7 hours (or more) per day for this many years and nothing have happened.....

MY thoughts exactly. I mean we don't know if he did have a mental illness or become violent during blackouts etc. I know people try to use this as a defense, the perp here actually had these long before the crime though, so would presumably be much easier for a court to believe it happened in this case.

Just my thoughts and I'm not implying this happened at all.
