GUILTY MO - Hailey Owens, 10, Springfield, 18 Feb 2014 #3

  • #401
8:55 AM Jurors sworn in and given instructions
9:05 Opening statements have begun.
9:06 Prosecutor Dan Patterson says Hailey Owens stayed home from school, not feeling well, but improved throughout the day. She walked to a friend's house later that day, and was walking back home along Lombard Street.
Neighbors hear man in pickup ask Hailey if she knows where Springfield street is, then see him grab Hailey and pull her in truck. Carlos and Michelle Edwards can't reach the truck in time, but call 911 immediately, give license plate.
9:08 Hailey's phone is found a few houses down, thrown out of the truck. Detectives find who truck is registered to with license plate number and determine Craig Wood drives it, then get address. No one is home when they arrive.
9:10 Detectives see the truck arrive at the house on Stanford Street. They get out as Wood gets out of truck. As he walks past truck, Wood tosses duct tape in back of the truck. As they speak with Wood, detectives smell bleach and ask him to go to police station. He goes willingly.

9:12 Detectives do a safety sweep of Wood's house looking for Hailey and don't find her.
9:13 Defense asks for a conference with Judge Mountjoy and opening statements are paused.
9:16 Opening statement resume. Detectives at Wood's house see bag with liquid bleach at top of basement stairs, find stairs are wet and so is the floor in the basement, more bleach in the basement, plastic tubs, a hose.
9:18 Wood denies to detective that he has Hailey. Interview is short.
9:19 Officers near Wood's house did grid search of the area. Officer finds clothing in a dumpster behind a strip mall matching the description of Hailey's clothing.
9:21 About 15 minutes after abduction, Wood is seen checking out at a Walmart store, buying bleach and Liquid Plumber. Officers find Wood's laundry, including shirt he was wearing and bed linens, in washing Machine at Dutch Maid laundromat.
9:23 Surveillance video showed Wood put items in dumpster behind strip mall. Video at Walmart shows a second trip, where Wood buys duct tape.

9:25 Officers go back to Wood's basement about 2AM with search warrant. They open one container, find documents. When they open second container, see outline of a body in trash bags.
9:30 Inside safe, officers find rifle, find shell in house believed to be used to kill Hailey.
9:31 Defense begins opening statement. Defense says repulsive act was caused by a meth and sexual addictions. Admits Craig Wood did in fact kidnap, rape and murder Hailey. Jury will have to decide if murder was premeditated. Says there is substantial evidence of a lack of planning.
9:33 Defense says Wood did not disguise himself in any way, drove his own truck in broad daylight, window on Wood's truck was down. Wood knew people saw him.
9:37 In Wood's house, detectives find purple folder with stories he had written of sexual fantasies with young girls. As disturbing and disgusting as they are, they show he has an unhealthy sexual interest in young girls that doctors call paraphilic disorder. Stories have names of girls at Pleasant View Middle School, where Wood worked as a teacher's aid and coach. Girls were interviewed, and never felt uncomfortable about Wood.

9:40 Detective finds meth. Defense says meth finally unleashed Woods long suppressed sexual urges. Whatever jury decides, Wood will respect their decision. Defense concludes.
9:45 Rick Christmas, operations manager for Springfield-Greene County 911 called to the stand. Testifies he made copy of 911 call.
9:47 Michelle Edwards called to the stand. Testifies about the location of her house on W. Lomard.
9:51 Prosecution asks Michelle to recall afternoon Feb 18, 2014. Michelle was in house getting ready to make a phone call. Carlos was doing yard work. Michelle went in garage to smoke and make phone call. Saw little girl walking along side of road, and she was on phone, stopped in front of their house.
9:57 Michelle saw tan Ford Ranger, hears driver ask, "Do you know where Springfield street is?" Hailey starts to walk away, defendant opens door, reaches out and grabs Hailey. Carlos is running and yelling, telling him to not touch her. Michelle is upset as testifying about the kidnapping. She testifies she saw license plate and calls 911.
9:59 Court hears 911 call played. Michelle, frantic, gave dispatcher description of truck, direction of travel, plate number. She pleads, "please help her!" Michelle tells dispatcher little girl is maybe 10 or 12 years old, didn't know her.

3:29 Video Craig Wood's interview with police shown in court. He's seen sitting with his arms crossed, looking up at the ceiling, shaking his leg. He's being asked about what he did after he got home from a day of coaching and teaching.
Investigator asked him about being on the west side of Springfield. Wood denies being near where Hailey was abducted. Investigator tells him they have reports of his license plate and description. Investigator asked him if he talked to any little girls. He denies this too. Wood continues to make excuses.

4:17 Court adjourns for the evening.

IMO there doesn't seem to be much or any cross examination by the defense. I'm confused.
Does that mean they just stipulate to the evidence thus far? Could that be reason for appeals down the line? Wish we had a verified attorney on our thread.

Thanks for all the posts about the trial jggordo- really appreciate them!!

This is such a brutal and disgusting case. I think one thing that makes it different is someone actually some this guy snatch this child. There are so many cases where we know that happened... but for someone to actually see it....wow.

Thanks jggorgo for putting the post of the trial here. I would have thought someone would have been tweeting but that is okay.

Having lived just down the street from where little Hailey was taken, yet that was many years ago. It gives me the creeps just thinking about her being snatched right in front of people. Yet I am so glad there were witness's. The area has changed so much with newer houses being built in former empty lots.

Oh I missed the beginning of this trial - thank you for the articles, and posting info on the trial jggordo! I've been busy posting tweets for Mary Yoder's case. Almost done on that - jury should get the case by Thursday or Friday!

Then will give my full attention to this one! Been following this one too long!

:rose: JUSTICE for HAILEY! :rose:

Woman breaks down as she tells jury about witnessing Hailey Owens' abduction

"My husband is up and running and says no, don't touch her don't take her," says Michelle Edwards.

She fought back tears while she recalled seeing Craig Wood grab Hailey Owens and take off with her.

"He takes off with his door open and my husband is like this far from grabbing him and he takes off at a high speed and he is gone in no time," she says.

IMO the "purple folder" is key evidence in this trial. The defense tried desperately to keep it out of evidence through "motions in lemine" prior to trial beginning. It contains handwritten "stories" about girls that Wood fantasized about from school, including a girl named Hailey. Defense is trying to say that her murder was not premeditated. The contents of this folder shows it was in a sense.

It creeps me out that he had names of female students in his file with lurid stories.

I remember reading earlier about the evidence of the purple folder and story with the name of a Hailey in it. I hate to say it but I doubt if Hailey Owens was known to CW before he abducted her and murdered her. Not that I don't want this to be premeditated case. The school CW taught at and where he lived at compared to Hailey Owens where in totally different parts of Springfield. jmo

BBM: what does that mean?

Thanks!

Wood's attorney is trying to say that the crime wasn't premeditated because he didn't try to disguise himself. That doesn't mean the crime wasn't premeditated, there's plenty of other evidence to show he did plan in advance to kidnap, rape and kill Hailey or some other little girl. What not using a disguise does mean is that he was an arrogant jerk who thought he could get by with it.

2:28 Hailey Owens' mother, Stacy Herman, takes the stand. No video or audio permitted.
She talked about Hailey being home from school with the flu the day she was abducted. Hailey was feeling better and went to a friend's house. Her mother said she saw Hailey for the last time around 3pm on February 18, 2014.
2:05 State calls as a witness, the manager of the Walmart Neighborhood Market on S. Glenstone at the time of Hailey Owens' murder. She testifies the record of a transaction and DVDs of surveillance video are from her store.
1:50 After a lunch recess, state calls Rhonda, a woman who worked at Dutch Maid Laundry on National Avenue in Feb. 2014. She remembers a scruffy looking man with shoulder-length blonde hair leaving some laundry at the facility on the date of the murder.

If memory serves, Woods went to the Walmart to purchase supplies for the crime, including the plastic tote. He was then spotted later at the laundromat where he was trying to clean up evidence from bed linens, etc.

Am I recalling that correctly?

ETA: He was buying bleach and drain cleaner at WalMart. He knew he needed to get rid of blood evidence in his home and in the drain as he washed it away. Apparently, he studied forensics enough to know if LE showed up, they would test his washer & dryer, as well as all drains for blood, hair and other evidence.
