Somehow, it is so much worse to me that she did it not for payment. We've heard of a few cases where women did this sort of thing to pay for drugs. That's bad enough. I can't wrap my head around what the reasons would be when not for payment. It's such a horrible betrayal of a mother's own baby girl. I just can't comprehend it.

There they discovered communications on Kyle's computer with Van Vlerah. St. Louis County Police say Kyle made several trips to St. Louis over the past year or so where he and Van Vlerah would go to motels in the Westport area and engage in sex acts with the baby. This allegedly started when the baby was just five months old. She's now 13 months old.

This article says that the child is okay physically. How can that be? Maybe I'm missing something, but how was this woman able to allow her baby to undergo such abuse and not have to take her to a hospital for urgent medical care? How is that physically possible? Wouldn't the child have internal injuries? I'm confused.

I wanted to address Prancy's question. We've discussed this before and I think that reporters are between a rock and a hard place. Of course, the child is not physically or emotionally well. That's like saying she was just mauled by a cougar but she's fine. I think the media wants to protect the child's confidentiality by not describing the sexual damage. I'm sure it will come out at trial, however. It bothers me too, though, and it feels as if the little one's pain and agony are being "glossed over".

After the "Christmas Miracle" Amber Alert in Phoenix last year (young girl abducted and raped by a stranger but miraculously rescued by an alert LEO and returned to her family), I think we all determined that it would be far better if the media adopted some sort of statement that validates the seriousness of the crime but protects the child's privacy. We had several suggestions ie:

"The child has no life threatening injuries and is receiving all necessary and appropriate medical care and therapeutic support."

"The child is currently being evaluated by specialists and is safe with her family or in a specialized foster home trained to meet her needs."

If I were the Queen Editor, I'd make that the law.

I have always supported mandatory death sentences for child predators/rapist and murderers. People who commit such evil acts upon a helpless child do not deserve to live. They should be considered as "rabid" animals and put to death. They can not ever be a contributing member of mankind and can never be "cured" of their evilness except by extermination. Unfortunately, crimes against children are not treated as the heinous crimes that they are and children's lives are not considered as valuable. Until these evil people are sentenced to death, things will not change.

I completely agree!!!Well said..My mother is a CPS worker and she will tell me the little details of what she sees and deals with on a daily basis its so awful of the horrible things people will do..We both get really surprised when I tell her a story that shocks her, this was one of them. Just when you think you have seen the worst of evil there is always another level beneath it...God Bless that child and I hope she does not become a "lifetime foster kid", I hope she gets adopted by loving people who will cherish her, all babies deserve that.......

A single mother from Ballwin has admitted to repeatedly performing sex acts with her infant daughter and an assistant college professor from California.

Tessa Vanvlerah, 22, of the 200 block of Solon Drive, has pleaded guilty in St. Louis County Circuit Court to one count each of statutory rape, statutory sodomy and incest. Sentencing is set for March 15.

Vanvlerah also faces ongoing federal charges of production of child , as does the professor, Kenneth M. Kyle, 47, of San Francisco, who is already in custody on a child sex abuse charge from California.
