Just a thought, even if JI "checked out", why would him being at work totally clear him? Couldn't someone, if they are at work, have made up a plan beforehand so that work was their alibi OR had someone else do something while they were at work? I don't understand why that would automatically leave him out as a suspect, not that I think he is, just wondering.

You are correct. Cell phones (unless you get a phone that is over 3 years old) have GPS tracking systems in them. You don't have to have the phone turned on, or be on a call for it to work. You would, however, have to take the battery out if you want to avoid this. But how many people do that.

The only person I can think of that couldn't be tracked was Shawn Adkins. There was no cell phone pings/activity for several hours the day Hailey Dunn went missing. I figured he took his battery out during that time.

But pinging to a tower and GPS are different.

All new phones have GPS built in, but not all have the software to use the full features.

OK in the beginning they cleared both parents right? Said they weren't suspects? So now one is being blamed and the other is being cleared? I think they are working them against one another. MOO

ok, been doing this since 6am.. gotta get some sleep. Hoping for good news when i wake up.

Sleeping with cell phone beside the bed (and computer, of course) doors and windows locked and two large dogs on the bed and floor. I'm covered, I HOPE!

Lets hope i can shut my MIND down now so i don't dream of cellphone pings, polygraphs, and hinkiness.

Hey Mel. You seem to have some knowledge here. What is the purpose for tracking a phone that is turned off?

it's used to find wandering teens (find the phone, and most likely you'll find your teenager, or even a cheating spouse) ;)

Tracking the cell phone’s GPS location in the event your phone is stolen or lost

Tracking the cell phone’s call logs and text messages. There are now programs available that show you the call logs, the SMS messages that a cell phone sends and receives, and many other details.

LE and FBI use the tracking feature to even pick up phone calls and can record your calls.

But mostly I've seen it used in cases to confirm where suspects are and if they match up to the story. I learned a lot about that during the Scott Peterson trial and how his phone pinged in places...where he said he wasn't.

I'm sure there are other reasons too! Just know "Big Brother is watching" ;)

Do you know that if you have cable tv, the cable company (and I'm guessing the gvt) can listen to conversations in your home without your consent and without you knowing. Not a joke.

imo

This isn't true. Cable television is carried into the home over coaxial cable that is a one-way medium. It has a huge capacity but no intelligence and that is why modems and cable boxes are required if you want it to be interactive.

Even then, it does not carry conversations within the household back to the cable company. Only digital signals via a cable box or modem go back to the cable company.

Exactly and that is what this program was all about. That phone companies could track where you went and not tell you they were doing it. And it also talked about taking pictures on your phone. That there is a capability in the picture code that people can tell exactly where the pic was taken. There is some software out there now. This show was scary. And they were saying there is a way to turn this off but few people even know about this tracking let alone how to turn it off.
The tracking when a phone is on makes sense to me. Its how they work. The tracking when a phone is off makes little sense. Most people have their phones on most of the time. To build some kind of secret tracking of phones that are powered down makes little sense. But I may be wrong.

Whoever took Lisa may not have realized that Jeremy had a work phone.....

How would a stranger know whose phones those were? For all they knew there could be more people in the house who had phones and dad had his on him.

An intruder doesn't necessarily = stranger. It may be somebody who knew enough about the family to know that would delay calling 911 till dad got home.

I don't believe they officially cleared either parent, I think they waltzed around it by saying things like they had no suspects, parents were cooperative, etc. If they believe both are involved, I doubt working them against one another will be successful. Could be why they are doing it.

If that's true - then the PTB have heard some mighty boring talk coming from my living room, and they've wasted some valuable technology! :innocent:

Maybe I should spice it up for them & give them something for their money?

OK on this google I found a site. I'm afraid to put my number in though.

Free tracking.

I think that LE may well know where the missing cell phones are. MOO

Right. I'm not very good at this, and am certainly not a techie :)

A cell phone tracking system involves the use of a cell phone to track a person. Those conducting the tracking can use the features on a cell phone to obtain a physical location for the person carrying the cell phone. Typically, a cell phone tracking system is associated with GPS, cell phone towers, E911 capabilities, pings, and the ‘location on/off’ feature, all of which contribute to disclosing the carrier's location.

OK according to DAD he has been cleared. But has LE actually said that?

Yes, I understand those features. But do they work with a phone that is powered down? How about if the battery is dead on the device?
