Margaret Walsh, a 47-year-old mother of three, was shot and killed on April 24, 1980, inside the Dairy Queen on Clayton at Clarkson, where she worked as a night manager. Despite reopening the case in 1991, 2006, and again recently, no arrests have been made.

''Margaret “Marge” Marie Walsh, 47, was found dead around 7 a.m. on April 24, 1980, at an Ellisville Dairy Queen. Investigators said Walsh, who was the night manager, had been fatally shot, and the office area was ransacked. A small amount of money was also reported missing.''

''Monday morning, St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Price Smith and Ellisville Police Chief Steven Lewis will hold a press conference to discuss developments in the case. They ask anyone with information regarding Walsh’s death to call the Ellisville Police Department at 636-227-7777 or CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-8477 to be eligible for a possible reward.''

I remember hearing about this on the news when it happened. I was in my last year of grade school at the time of the murder. My family moved from nearby Manchester, MO to Ellisville in 1976 and we lived 2 miles by car or 10 minutes by walking from the Dairy Queen. My friends and I would frequently walk or bike to get ice cream. I have lived in Ellisville or one of the neighboring cities my entire life. So, if anyone would like information about what the area was like back in the 70s/80s, feel free to ask.

Here is a map showing where the Dairy Queen (green arrow) was and is still located. The buildings indicated by the yellow arrows didn't exist back in 1980. In fact, those areas were nothing but fields back then. So, late at night, there would have been very few people around as the stores in the strip mall (red arrow) would have been closed by the time the crime occurred. I don't recall if it was there when the crime occurred but, at least by 1990 (if not earlier), there was a bar in the strip mall marked by the purple arrow.

Clayton Road and Highway 340 (otherwise known as Clarkson Road), were only one lane each way without a center turn lane back then. The area was a combination of empty fields, subdivisions, and smaller businesses.

'Officials announced developments in a 1980 Ellisville cold case on Monday. Police are asking anyone with information to call them'.

Sep 8, 2025 rbbm.
"In a press conference Monday, Ellisville Police Chief Steve Lewis announced former St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch is leading a renewed effort to solve the 1980 shooting death of Margaret "Marge" Walsh. Lewis said it is the only homicide of record in the history of the city.
We've reopened this case with renewed focus, using modern forensic tools and exploring every possible lead," Lewis said.
"We are determined to identify the person responsible for this heinous crime."

"Fitch said they are reviewing bullet and DNA evidence using modern technology.
Now, investigators say they need help from the public. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477. CrimeStoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. You can also call Ellisville investigators directly at 636-227-7777.''
