Overreaching
I surely respect and get your point. I am no apologist for Ms. Drew who will, as we all will, reap what she sows.
I think a lot of people are interested in the "who deserved it because of their actions" way of looking at violence and brutality. But that way of looking at things doesn't interest me because it will never lead to the end of violence and brutality - something that interests me very much!
There will always be someone (or some group) who thinks the persecuted (whoever they may be at the time) bring such woes upon themselves. This will never change the fact that cruelty met with cruelty solves nothing and, in fact, perpetuates the chain of pain.
I agree with you that continuing violence doesn't help anyone and only perpetuates the problem. The only thing I would add is that it does indicate the level of anger, frustration, and empathy for the victim people in the community feel--particularly when legally, the Drews will walk away with no legal consequences for their actions.
I don't believe the Drews should suffer physical violence because that is always wrong. But if they are shunned by the community, if they have no business clientele, if they feel despised by everyone around them...perhaps they will begin to feel a little bit of what Megan experienced.
