CLAY COUNTY — Joshua T. Rocha, the Kansas City man charged with murdering North Kansas City police officer Daniel Vasquez, also faces five felony charges of possession of child 🤬🤬🤬🤬 after being indicted by a grand jury.

According to the indictment, Rocha is accused of possessing dozens of videos and photos in 2022 of children engaged in “sexually explicit conduct.” Rocha pleaded not guilty to the charges. A court docket call in the case is set for Clay County Circuit Court for Friday, Sept. 13.

If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

In the murder case, the trial is scheduled to last two weeks and begin Sept. 22, 2025. Rocha, 27, was indicted in the summer of 2022 on the murder and armed criminal action charges after he allegedly admitted to county staff in the Clay County Annex that he committed the murder.

Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Zach Thompson announced during a press conference last year the state intends to seek the death penalty in the murder case. Thompson said the crime was “outrageously or wantonly vile, inhuman” and included “depravity of mind.”

Rocha also pleaded not guilty to the first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges. He is being held in Clay County Detention Center. His bond in the murder case is set at $2 million while bond in the child 🤬🤬🤬🤬 possession case is set at $500,000.

The Kansas City Star and other local media are opposing a request in court to limit news coverage of an upcoming capital murder trial involving the killing of a North Kansas City police officer during a July 2022 traffic stop. The McClatchy Company, which owns and operates The Star, along with the parent companies of the Courier-Tribune, KCTV, KMBC-TV, KSHB-TV and WDAF-TV, filed a motion to intervene after the public defenders for Joshua Rocha filed a motion to “regulate” media coverage of his murder trial. The motion, filed last week, “effectively means to prohibit media coverage,” the news media contend in their motion to intervene, pointing out that the Missouri.

A Clay County judge will allow the media one pool camera in the upcoming capital murder trial of a man accused of killing a North Kansas City police officer during a traffic stop in July 2022. During a hearing Friday morning, Judge David Chamberlain denied the request by the public defenders representing 27-year-old Joshua T. Rocha to “regulate” the media by limiting news coverage.
