Police reported that they were contacted June 19 by Penny Warfel’s sister in Columbus, Ohio, to report her sister missing. Penny Warfel was last seen Sept. 15, 2017.

Lawrence Warfel, 75, was the last person in her family to see her. When police asked Warfel about his missing wife, he told them she had moved to Florida with a male friend after the married couple got into an argument. Before she left, she had asked him to withdraw her Social Security to pay her medical bills. However, when investigators checked with Moberly Regional Medical Center, they found no payments had been made to her account.

Details of Disappearance

Penny was last seen in Moberly, Missouri on September 15, 2017, the day before her fifty-seventh birthday. She has never been heard from again.

Her husband, Lawrence Warfel, told her family they'd gotten into an argument and she left for Florida with a male friend, but it's not confirmed she ever got out of Missouri and it's uncharacteristic of her to not be in touch with her family. Julie's sister in Ohio reported her missing in June 2018, nine months after she was last seen.

A photo of Lawrence is posted with this case summary. In September 2018, he was charged with felony financial exploitation of an elder/disabled person, in connection with his use of Penny's Social Security benefits. She got $750 a month in disability in benefits, and Lawrence withdrew all the money from her account. By the time of his arrest, he'd taken about $8,000.

Lawrence has not been named as a suspect in Penny's actual disappearance, and it's unclear what happened to her. Her case remains unsolved.

Lawrence Warfel, 76, of Moberly, was sentenced to 24 months in prison for aggravated identity theft. Warfel appeared before U.S. District Court Judge Henry A. Autrey who ordered him to pay restitution in the amount of $11,688.11.

Moberly Man Sentenced for Aggravated Identity Theft After Withdrawing Money from Missing Wife's Account

And nobody in LE thought "Hé, this woman is missing since 2017, never went to court for not getting her money, never went to the agency where she got the benefits from, never changed her bank account, never turned up?" I'm not buying that. They must think he had something to do with her disappearance.

When seeing the name Warfel a kind of rotten smell came to me. I don't think they are related, but hmmm. To explain:

From the Tracy Kroh thread.

The investigation into the disappearance of 17-year-old Tracy Kroh in 1989 took another twist this week, when testimony at a competency hearing for an 89-year-old Jackson Township man charged with burglary indicated he is a suspect in her case.

But due in part to a judge's ruling issued Friday, Mark <Eugene> Warfel, 89, might never stand trial for his suspected involvement in Kroh's 33-year-old disappearance.

Warfel owns a property where investigators in the Kroh case have made a least two searches in the past.

Warfel is also suspected of killing his wife and sexual assaults.

etc.
