MO MO - Phyllis Corbin, 16, St. Louis, 1 Nov 1963

I assume she is the daughter of John Wesley Corbin and Helen Marie Corbin, both of whom are now dead although John only died in 2014. This is from a 1950 federal census record on Ancestry which also shows 3 siblings (I assume the other 3 were born subsequently as her mother was only 26 in 1950). There seems very little trace in records and the obituary of her brother John Wesley Jr at https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/theledger/name/john-corbin-obituary?id=24572236 mentions the other siblings from the 1950 census but not Phyllis. However, the obituary of her brother Michael at Michael Corbin Obituary from 2019 does list her as predeceasing him. It does seem as though her memory has been somewhat lost, although it is good to know some relatives remain interested. With both parents and all but one sibling now deceased perhaps this is one reason.

I had previously overlooked that the Good Shepherd Home was part of the worldwide Magdalene homes which were at the centre of the huge scandal surrounding the Irish Catholic church, which lasted into the 1990s and which effectively destroyed the influence of the Catholic Church in Ireland when the truth emerged. If the St Louis home was even slightly similar to those in Ireland it would have been entirely sensible to run away.
Hello & Great Info! Wow - Thnx! I have been skimming on this case without seeing an official police document (3 hours in) One person states, she is off to New Orleans with a friend that returns 3 weeks later (remains unknown) and I have also seen, that she was at a local bar next day after running away to never be seen again? Any proof to any of these? And were they’re any active serial killers in St Louis at this time? And who is the official last person to have seen her?

"Maladjusted" = abused and acting out.
I'm glad she got away, and I hope she was able to find a better life for herself. Given the background I read on her, it's no wonder she has never contacted her family (if she were alive to do so).

I really hope Phyllis found happiness and a peaceful life.

Amateur opinion and speculation

Maybe NamUs #UP15034. Found in St Louis in 1968. Anyone know an email contact or how to submit possible match online aside from calling?
I just looked on NAMUS and this one has yet to be excluded. Even though bodies are badly decomposed, do they still release autopsy or postmortem photos if asked? I'm new to the game, but did check into this. Caught my attention. Also, how did you come across this comparison?

Apologies for sounding silly, but is the picture on the right age progression or is that an actual photo?
Asking is never silly. ;)
No, both images are enhanced versions of Phyllis' photographs. As far as I know, there's no age progression photo yet.
My mistake: there's an age progression portrait.

i! I did eventually find an email to contact and submitted my suggestion but never heard back. I searched NamUs by height/weight etc and found the unidentified and thought they could match up.

I have been communicating with the niece for approximately the last three months. What I am posting below is the transcript of conversation. Her replies are in parentheses. The pictures posted was evidence obtained by a private investigator she had hired. It is believed that Phyllis probably met her demise shortly after moving down to Louisiana. (Again, that is speculation and theory) I have been coming through newspapers.com subscription seeking anything I can find that might be relevant as well with no luck yet. I am using NAMUS and scanning USA and it doesn't take long to come up with a list of potential matches and/or descriptions that seem relevant. Phyllis is the oldest missing persons case in Missouri. She wasn't reported missing for almost 55 years. She was a child when she ran away. I want to find this girl. If you read this. Please help.

Did Phyllis have any physical deformities that would be easy to identify?

(((No she did not. It is so disheartening to not knowing.)))

I’m covering lots of material. Unidentified searches across USA at this time.

Did she have any nicknames?

Tattoos?

Dental work?

Last seen wearing?

Do you know the other girls name she left with?

Who was the man that said he took them to Grey Hound Station?

What was the girls story that returned? When did she last see Phyllis? What was her plan at that time?

I’ve heard the bus station and the bar as last seen? Is this something we know for a fact?

Also, would you prefer me write to the officials about to obtain more info? I do apologize for bother you.

Is your DNA or anyone else’s DNA on file to match or cross out potential identifications?

I’m listening to podcast now, apologize for questions.

(((I 100% know she took a bus and went to Louisiana. I've also found out since the podcast that she was arrested in January 2025 for vagrancy and she used to Alias name Phyllis Sommers, but signed it over the top of the name Phyllis Corbin. Her mind wanted her to write her real name and she had to alter it it's very legible that it's altered.)))

(((My DNA as well as her living sisters is on file in all databases as well as National Center for missing and exploited children)))

There is proof about the bus trip?! Oh, wow.

So, Uncle Mike no longer a suspect?

(((Nope he is not)))

So, 11/22/63 now is last date seen?

(((Yes)))

And when was arrest date? You write January 2025 earlier. That’s in the future. Typo?

(((January 1965 was an arrest under the assumed name)))

New Orleans?

(((It was a typo-I’m a property manager signing lease renewals for next year right now)))
(((Gretna Louisiana.)))

Oh, because the finger prints match! And that says 1965. So 11/22/63 on bus ticket is not last seen - it is 1/25/65 on the second fingerprint photo? Am I wrong?

So, since she was using an assumed name and actually went on the run (or moved on with life) is she considered missing if she doesn’t want to be found? Or is this a search to unite you as a family? Or concerned since it has been so many years?

Is there a mugshot of her arrest at that time?

(((She is considered missing she was underage when she went missing)))

(((here are no mugshots. Those were not digitized back in those days)))

(((Since she was only 15 years old she's considered missing endangered child)))

(((My understanding is that she did go to court and she paid a $50 fee or something and nobody was with her.)))

(((I had a detective working on the case for a long time. She reached so many dead ends after those arrests it's like Phyllis just fell off the face of the Earth.)))

(((Want to rest was for vagrancy and the other one was for being an underage barmaid)))

Have you written out any sort of timeline of factual events that we know of yet?

And is the stuff you sent me - all of the stuff the detective was able to discover?

Did she search all over Louisiana to get that arrest record? Or just the county?

Were you able to find ANY OTHER reason why your father’s side of the family just let her go from their life?

Have you ever found any of her belongings in family belongings that have been passed down?

(((Nothing was written by me, but I have some that was written by detectives. They searched LA general area because they tracked down a male acquaintance she was working for or living in a place he provided. Unfortunately, he remembered very little with his cancer and in his 80's.

The girl Phyllis ran away with was also found. Little memory too.)))

Any nicknames you’re aware of that she might go by? Patty?

(((Patti Ann was what she went by before she left home.)))

Hello, Good Morning.

Some questions.

Have you updated the multiple websites with new info/evidence? And when?

Have you been shown any unidentified remains or read any descriptions you find possible to be her? Or any ruled out?

Do you have any current theory of your own?

Has the detective quit working and if so, when?

Did you ever update the podcaster in regard to new evidence?

(((The detective sent the updated information as far as the eye color and hair color of when she was last seen and where she was last seen. Trying to get them to do anything that's another story.

I have submitted multiple people that I would like them to check. There's unidentified remains in Arizona in different places but nobody's willing to do anything because most of the time there's not sufficient DNA on those unidentified and I think part of it's probably the financial commitment.

My theory is she ran away and got caught up in a lifestyle that caught up to her. I don't think she is still with us unless she assumed a new Social Security number and everything she has never worked under her social security number she was given as a child.

The detective was pulled off cold cases July 2024. She chased on a lady that had the same date of birth same name Etc in Boston and that lady turned out not to be my aunt and next thing I know she was pulled off a cold cases and I have no idea where she's at because emails to her go on answered. I am in communication with Ed the one that did the podcast and he is aware of the updates. And has asked me to stay in touch.)))

What is the name of the last town she was in? I’d like to start looking at maps. (Mix and match my findings online)

I wander what the cause for the guy to want to drop the charges against her? How was she notified?

I also wander if Phyllis didn’t go missing while with her friend (or didn’t return one night) and she came back because she was alone.

Do we have the interview from the friend? I know you said she knows very little or remembers little but what is that little information she does remember? And what were the words from the land owner? Where her apartment was located?

(((The last town would be the one listed on the arrest record. 335 Lafayette Rd Greta LA)))

(((I was not given the actual reports. Those were private information with the detective. Let me see what I have in writing from the detective.)))

(((The guy was part of the mafia and not a good guy. I think there was somebody that didn't show up to court but I also think on one of the charges that the guy that was in essence taking care of her, which to me sounds like a pimp, paid one of the charges.)))

I spoke with the Gretna Historical Society today. So on Phyliss arrest record it states that her residence is at 335 Lafeyette Avenue. In the mid 60s this location was called Buellers Palace aka a Gentlemens Club and across from it was a hardware store. Well to the right of hardware store was a place called Jenes Palace. I inquired further about these locations and I was told that this area was a rough and dangerous area. It is my belief that Phyliss likely lived at where she worked. Additionally, I sent the Jane Doe 6942 to Donna and shes going to email Namus for comparison.

I wonder how or why Phyliss would have wound up at that location to begin with. I dont think we will ever that answer, but it makes me wonder what happened to her after she worked here. Also it is known that this location was an empty field in the 70s, so it was not around for too long.

I am the niece of Phyllis and have been trying everything possible to get her compared to #up15034 and #up6942. I've been thankful to have had somebody helping through the search after years of the sitting Idol with only me doing what I can and stumbling along the way to get things done. I appreciate everybody's theories and talking about it and putting it out there for people to read the story.

I should also note that several years ago somebody suggested Almeda County Jane Doe 1969. Somebody did a side-by-side of her and Phyllis and the resemblance is very uncanny. The unfortunate part is Almeda County Jane Doe 1969 is in an unknown location. Records have been lost over the years and they were Excavating trying to find the location of her grave site so at this moment I don't believe anything's been resolved therefore there's no Biometrics to compare.

Donna,

I am not sure if you have seen it or not, but their is a postmortem photo of that Jane Doe online and they look very similar. I have the link for it you want to see it. You may want to contact the local sheriff's office for photos of that person or at least a copy of the police report from it.

There have been some significant advances in facial recognition software. Perhaps the photos can be compared using that technology.

I wanted to give everyone an update on what has transpired today.

I talked to Donna for the majority of the afternoon, so the Jane Doe out in California shown above was lost by the state of California However, before the state lost the human remains, they got her fingerprints so there on file in California. As it relates to Corbin, we have her fingerprints from when she was arrested in Louisiana. Those fingerprints have not been compared yet. Donna sent the prints off to Alameda today for comparison to the Jane Doe and yes we bypassed Namus. Since that Jane Doe is connected to a serial killer on the FBIs most wanted list, I am sure that Alameda would at least take a look at them.

I also looked at the Doe network and found something odd for that Jane Doe...When she was killed...it was inside of the St. Louis Hotel in Oakland California, now known as the North Alameda Police Station...Phylis was from St. Louis.

Is it confirmed that Phyllis Sommers and Phyllis Corbin are the same person? The reason I ask is that the vagrancy charges could be mother and daughter, the height is shorter than originally quoted and also the date of birth? I know that the neice said that the finger prints matched, but did they have Phyllis Corbin's finger prints on file before she went missing?
