HARRISONVILLE, Mo. -- The Cass County Sheriff's department says human remains were found Friday in a wooded area in Harrisonville.

Friday afternoon, deputies were contacted by mushroom hunters who found possible human remains in the area of S. Mopac Rd between E. 235th and E. 239th.

Late Friday night, the Jackson County Medical Examiners Office confirmed the remains were human. No information on sex, race, age, or when the victim died have been determined.

The sheriff told KCTV5 News that the body had "been there for a while."

Investigators have closed S. Mopac Road between 235th and 239th Streets. The sheriff’s office has deputies and recruits conducting a search for more evidence.

This road closure is expected to last most of the day.

The authorities hope to have more information today. If not, they will release more information on Monday.

Cass County investigators said the remains were discovered around 7 p.m. Friday evening. The sheriff noted that the area is near a popular dirt road between Harrisonville and Pleasant Hill, and is near a railroad track.

Medical examiners confirm the remains are human, but say they haven’t been able to determine any identifying information about the victim, nor have they said when the victim may have died.

The sheriff’s office has about 40 deputies and recruits conducting a ground search for evidence.
In April 2017, mushroom hunters discovered the remains of missing women Jessica Runions and Kara Kopetsky. Those remains were found in a rural location approximately 10 miles to the west of the location of the latest discovery — there’s been no established link between the latest discovery and any current missing persons cases.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says dozens of crews will be out most of Saturday conducting a search for evidence, and are asking people to stay away from that area.

[h=1]Family of missing woman Desirea Ferris on edge after human remains found in Cass County[/h]
It could take days or even weeks before the medical examiner can identify the remains.
“We don’t have anybody that we believe it may be, however there are numerous missing people around the metropolitan area and obviously that’s one of the first things we do is begin to try and correlate that list with what we may have here,” Weber said.

In April 2017, mushroom hunters discovered the remains of missing women Jessica Runions and Kara Kopetsky in a rural location about 10 miles west of this latest discovery.

Desirea Ferris of Liberty, Missouri has been missing since may of last year. Her family is on edge after learning of Friday's find.
“It’s heartbreaking. You tear up, you’re sick at your stomach, you’re panicked because you want to get to where she is so if it is her and they can identify her quickly, she’s not alone,” Jennifer Ferris, Desirea’s stepmom, said.

She and some others went to the scene as deputies were investigating Saturday morning.
“We asked a lot of questions about belongings around, hair color, anything they could tell us and they couldn’t tell us anything about it,” Ferris said.
But Mrs. Ferris and others who have been helping with the search have several hunches given the location of this discovery.

“The people that she was last with are very familiar with it and connected to that area. Family members live within miles of that area. We’ve had tips that she was taken down there and dumped,” Ferris said.

The family of Desirae Ferris, who has been missing for nearly a year, arrived at the scene after learning about the remains.

“Oh it makes you sick. It makes you sick to your stomach, it makes you want to throw up. It makes your heart race you’re thinking that hopefully it’s her, could it be her… is it not her, if it’s not her than its somebody else’s kid,” said Jennifer Ferris, Ferris’s step mom.

The family says several tips have led them to conduct ground searches for Ferris in the Harrisonville area.

“It definitely sparked a real moment that it could possibly have been or be her… is her,” said Spike, a family friend.

That same hope something that is felt by many families. Between Cass, Platte, Jackson and Clay counties, there are more than 150 active missing persons cases.
Sheriff Weber says whenever human remains are found they receive dozens of phone calls from families of the missing who are looking for answers and closure.
Weber says it could be a while before the remains are identified.

I've heard of Desirae Ferris but I had no idea she was connected to this area. There are currently 10 missing people in cass county and none have posters or really any info.

I also checked the GIS map and county assessor's map, and all but 2 plots surroundingv the location are owned by a land trust that's owned by one family. I think only one has an actual residence on it, so there's no telling how long someone could have gone unnoticed.

I know some of those are quite recent, but not one is in namus, even the 16YO who went missing in 2016.

Cass county is pretty bad about getting information out, and I know last year they had some legal issue over misappropriated funds or something, so I don't know if it's a lack of resources or what the deal is exactly. But I live ten minutes away from Harrisonville, in cass county and I haven't heard of a single one of those missing people either. Last time I checked the list of missing people, they had one or two who were actively posting selfies with location tags on social media, so not exactly missing... It's a mess.

[h=1]Family of missing Liberty woman says remains found in Cass County are not her[/h]
HARRISONVILLE, Mo. -- The family of a local, missing woman says the human remains found in rural Cass County late Friday night are not Desirea Ferris of Liberty, Mo.

Ferris has been missing since May of last year.
"We knew yesterday unofficially but today we just found out officially to where I can announce....The remains in Harrisonville are NOT Desirea," Desirea’s stepmom, Jennifer Ferris, posted Monday to a page dedicated to bringing her home.

In the post she says the family feels, "defeated, exhausted, emotional and heartbroken." She asked for continued prayers as they keep pushing to find their missing loved one.

Harrisonville is pretty far from Clinton. My daughter lives in Harrisonville and I live close by.

One person has been taken off the Cass County MP list. I couldn't find any information on whether or not she's been located safe or if her removal from the list is related to this case.

[h=1]Detectives say human bones in Cass County belonged to woman[/h]
HARRISONVILLE, Mo. – Human bones discovered Friday by a mushroom hunter have been initially identified as belonging to a woman.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office announced the discovery Monday. A spokesman also said the department is investigating the case as a homicide.

During the weekend, the parents of missing Liberty, Mo. woman Desirea Ferris sought to find out if the bones belonged to her.

Initial examination of the bones ruled out a connection to Ferris based on the height of the person. The bones are connected to a person much taller than Ferris.
During a preliminary autopsy, investigators determined the remains couldn't belong to Ferris because of height.

Her family said police told them the remains belong to an individual who is approximately 5’6. Ferris is 5’1.

yes her. I know there is a distance, but no one knows really where she was taken

I agree, distance should not be a factor. If what Desirea Ferris' family said is correct about the UID being about 5' 6", then this could not be Angela. She was 59 inches or abt 4'9" according to her NAMUS file.
