MO - Six Mohler family members for child sex crimes, Bates City 2009 #4

Missizzy--I corrected the initial arrest date from my earlier post (asleep at the wheel) and you were right, of course! Also, I think Sugar Creek technically straddles the Missouri River because the change in the course of the river. I agree with Chicana who considers Sugar Creek part of Independence. It has its own city government but I think they contract with Independence for emergency services and the Independence School District may even include Sugar Creek, so it is hard to distinguish where one ends and the other starts.

We have a short thread on Toal, he was a CASA volunteer and getting ready to become a GAL.

He was a CASA volunteer??? He was getting ready to become a Guardian ad Litem??? In Missouri or Kansas? Could you give us a link to your thread? Thanks for passing this on, Chicana!

Concerning Sugar Creek, I was going off this info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_Creek,_Missouri

"Sugar Creek is a city in Clay and Jackson counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 3,839 at the 2000 census."

Is this info not correct?

I've always wondered why the men were originally lodged in the Lafayette County Jail--not Clay or Jackson. Does anyone remember why? Sr. is now in Clay County Jail, I'm assuming due to his COV. Burrell Jr.'s still in Lafayette. Roland's listed as present at both Jackson and Lafayette (??).

Looks like Darrel, Jared, and David have bailed. Do I have this right, TM?

If you go to Clay County's official map, http://communitylink.com/maps/libertymo/claycountymo/mainmap_main.htm and look at the southeast area you will see the area known as River Bend. This is one of the areas I noted above as being changed for flood control. It is the area I think wiki is trying to say is Sugar Creek, but I think it is Kansas City city limits (maybe Liberty). But as far as I have known, it is all in Jackson County. I will check further, because this intrigues me! I am very familiar with the area and have never heard of it being north of the river.

If you navigate around a little bit (not an easy task) on the map, you will find the boundaries for Sugar Creek and not any of it is in Clay county on this map. Makes me feel better about what I said earlier!

I was just going off the Wiki article about Blue Springs. I find it interesting how the Mohler case seems to moving back and forth across county lines. I've never been to the area but I have lived in Southern California. I'm assuming the city and the suburbs kind of run together. That's the way it looks on the map.

I wonder if Sugar Creek was more separate or distinct back in 1988. If you notice at the top of that article I posted about Kathy Webb, they mention the area as being a drop off point for bodies. Is that a sketchy area? Was it? It's hard to know just looking at a map. It could be just open area down by the river or there could be nice jogging trails. I found it interesting that Burrell Jr. lived only 7 blocks from where the body was found. That's about the distance of a nice evening walk.

Lafayette County Sheriff's Office arrested them...Bates City is in Lafayette County - that's where the farm is & where the crimes occurred (altho I do recall mention of crimes in multiple counties).

Roland was moved to the Jackson Co. Detention Center because of his sleep disorder, IIRC....It's such a shame he didn't feel safe there, or have a pencil or paper. If I had to guess, Lafayette County jail's booking system isn't sophisticated enough to show a transfer to another jail/detention center so that's why Roland shows up in 2 facilities on Vinelink...Also, I looked at Jackson Co. DOC site & it says they hold inmates from other jurisdictions, and IIRC, they have a much larger facility than Lafayette Co.

I can see why LE wouldn't want them all in the same jail....too easy to find a guard or trustee who will pass letters & notes for them.

Yep - Darrel, Jared & David posted bail.

Going off some of the misplaced or forgotten remarks (I can't believe I spaced those) by Lafayette County Sheriff Kerrick Alumbaugh, would there have to be a public announcement if more victims were located? Wouldn't the media go after those Probable Cause documents or indictments?

When more victims came forward in our case (unrelated to our family), the media covered it and there were further grand jury indictments.

IMHO it would qualify as sketchy--the area looks heavily overgrown. It is an industrial area and I'm not sure you can even see the river from the road so it is probably not geared for recreation or sightseeing. If you have never used the directional birdseye view on Bing's map service, you might be surprised at the level of detail you can find there.

Yes this area is very dense brush and industrial area. The Porter kids were found in the area just east of Sugar Creek known as Cement City. I never knew that it was an "actual city" just thought it was where the cement plant was (is?). It is a known dumping area (rubbage and bodies for that matter) and "growing" area if you know what I mean. Homeless set up camp in the area also. And this is my knowledge from the late 80's also but dont think it has changed much.

I recall doing a lot of research way upthread into Sugar Creek. There are also caves in that area and comes up on mapquest as Cement City Road. I'd just never made the connection to how close it was to Jr.'s house. I wondered if that might have been a name of a business back there at some point. I found this:

http://quarriesandbeyond.org/states/mo/mo-stone_industry/mo-stone_indus_2.html

"and the...Sugar Creek Cement Plant began operation sometime prior to 1913."

and a brochure about the Sugar Creek Cement Plant as it is today:

http://www.lafarge-na.com/wps/wcm/resources/file/ebdac3001200f64/LFGC_SugarCreek_Brochure.pdf

You'll note that there's a photo of the surrounding area. It does look thick with underbrush. So this is 7 blocks from where Burrell Mohler Jr. lived at the time of his arrest? I wonder if he's always lived quite close to this area?

I keep coming back to statements that the girls made about seeing murders near rivers and the flipping of the rings. I know we haven't had any confirmation of bodies found or murders confirmed but it continues to haunt me. Other than Kathy Webb are there any other unsolved murders from that particular area in the eighties?

Google Gregory Breeden in Kansas City! He is suspected in lots of mutilated bodies being found in the Missouri River, but they can't prove it. They gave him an excessive jail sentence for bad checks while they tried to pin this on him, but they never have brought formal charges against him.

And yes, there are lots of caves in the area. This area has a limestone foundation that they have carved out for underground storage that go on for miles under there! Also many natural caves. I forgot about that feature of the area.

  • #132
Yes the caves certainly might have been a factor in Randy Leach's disappearance and could figure into some possible murders. I don't remember the Mohler girls mentioning caves but they do talk about rivers. There were also a lot of maps found. I did a lot of research back in late November and December about those caves.

One thing that keeps bothering me is that we don't have a confirmed address (I don't believe) for Burrell Jr. I see him listed at two different addresses in Sugar Creek. I wonder which was his home prior to arrest? Also, how long did he live there? Does anyone know how to check that?

I find it very interesting that Martin Cordry (an RSO, still in treatment) is listed as living within blocks of Jr. and together, they live within walking distance of the Cement City Road. That road was where Kathy Webb's body was found in 1988 and where there was a possible link for Randy Leach. Isn't this a little coincidental? If I'm not mistaken, Burrell Jr. is on his 3rd or 4th wife and there's been multiple children in the marriages.

I also seem to remember finding (early on) a woman with an Asian sounding name listed at Sr.'s house, only a few miles from Jr's house, and there's also an Asian sounding name listed at Cordry's house. What could that be all about? Just of interest. The names strike me as Korean. Exchange students, renters? Remember how neighbors of Sr. commented about seeing a young disabled woman at his house? Hmmmmm.

I have a feeling that we've been concentrated a bit much on the Bates City farmhouse when the Mohlers have been away from that house for years. Remember what the Sheriff wisely told us. There are more victims as pedophiles do not stop.

I'm going to see if I can find out when and where Burrell Jr. has lived since he left the Bates City farmhouse. I'd also like to know if anyone can link Cordry to any of the Mohlers in any way. And who the heck is the guy in Blue Springs who just got arrested?

Why do I get the feeling that a veil will be parted and a lot of connections will start to be made? I hope.....

I've been reading all 80+ pages of thread on the Mohlers and have come up with a few details which I had totally forgotten. For instance I forgot that the PC docs state that some of the abuse occurred in other jurisdictions in the state of Missouri as well as "another state". Does any one else remember this:

http://www.fox4kc.com/media/acrobat/2009-11/50431694.pdf

Which state? (10 lines from the bottom of first page)

And in reading an article from back in November about how great the guys were, I noticed that a neighbor of Jared's commented that Jared was often seen walking his pit bull around the neighborhood. The dog's name was Cypree. Does anyone know where that name comes from? I googled it and I guess Cypree got a new home or is at least needing a new home, as the ad was flagged:

columbiamo.craigslist.org/zip/1647436091.html

So, folks, even if your looking to adopt a nice pit for the kids, I don't know if I'd want to meet this guy, even in a park.

I'm guessing that Jared isn't going to be having enough quality time to spend with Cypree. I was also surprised by his email address. He worked at Carfax so why is he using an edu address? His name is Jared Leroy so I assume this must be him. Oh, and living in Columbia and the dog named Cypree and all. So many little details.

Jared was also found on MS (closed now) and listed as a swinger.

Just a few nuts and bolts I'd missed. Still looking.

I never saw the info about a pit bull earlier but this Craigslist ad sure looks like you've nailed it again. Cold shivver thinking about the dog and wondering if he's the one meeting people in the park. I'm guessing MS is MySpace and I wish it wasn't closed so I could see for myself--he really called himself a swinger? Trust me, it's not that I doubt you--but what was he thinking? On second thought, I don't want to know.

Wintergreen--I think I've come a long way since November 2009. I can't imagine posting something now without linking to it. Here's a copy of my Post #180 on Thread 1, November 11, 2009:

"I found this quote and hope that all the neighbors are going to compare notes:

"JE, Mohler's neighbor of three years, said she would have never suspected anything like this because he was "such a kind neighbor."

"He was a very religious man and held Bible studies at his home every Sunday," JE said.

Some neighbors knew Mohler as just the guy who would walk around the neighborhood with his pit bull, Cypree.

"He was really nice and the kids loved to jump around in the bed of his truck," said TT, who lives down the street. "All the kids would say 'Jared doesn't care.'"

Some of the neighbors said they were planning on meeting later this week to discuss the recent events."

I looked back over the prior posts and don't see a news article I was referring to. I also can't find it by google search now. However, much has disappeared and I think this was a minor article just getting neighbors' opinions. I was interested as it mentioned a dog (!!) and I found the dog's name to be "different". The Mohlers don't strike me as men who would name their dogs unique names. Cypree is unique. Maybe someone can come up with a theory on that. I did find a very well respected kennel in Europe selling a line of pits under the name Cypress. Could that be it?

Anyway, I just googled "Mohler pit bull Cypree" and the Craigslist ad came up. It was flagged which means that when you open and close it, it disappears from google search (thank goodness or we'd be forever more bogged down in a sea of Craigslist ads!!). I was able to link it as it was in my history. It looks like Jared Leroy Mohler is using his Dad and Grandfather's middle name as a last name--possibly due to the notoriety of the name Mohler right now. I do find it interesting that he's got an edu address as I remember reading that he was an employee of Carfax.

Probably a minor detail but interesting. I wonder why the ad got flagged. Usually the only reason an animal ad gets flagged is if someone is asking for a huge re-homing fee. And it was flagged, not deleted or canceled.

My original post is chilling when you dissect it. Bible studies at the house? Allowing kids to jump in his truck as Jared doesn't care. I'm sorry but it gives me the creeps. As far as we know, Jared never married and has always struck me as a little different than the others, and not in a good way. I don't like the idea of Jared meeting up with possible little kids in parks and showing them his dog. That would probably violate his bond agreement. Maybe a friend of his is taking the dog to meet people but it does have his email address, I assume. Just yuck. I do hope the dog gets a good home.

I also wondered about the person who used Jared as a reference. I'm always a little concerned about anything to do with encryption but I guess it could have to do with video games. I have a tendency to jump to the worst possible scenario.

The comment about Myspace was posted on the first thread and it is indeed closed. I remember checking at the time, though, and it did indeed say "swinger". IIRC, there wasn't a lot on it.

I'm a little out of my league here but I found Jared Mohler here as a reference for this man:

http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...mohler&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=safari

Note that the man works doing cryptographic consulting. Is that of concern or not?

It could be a concern because cryptography (the practice and study of hiding information) can go both ways. If someone works as a consultant in this field, I think it's safe to assume he can encrypt (and decrypt) electronic information with ease. Maybe Jared is not that skilled, but if you judge people by the company they keep then this guy might be a concern. If you were going to use the internet to share files that you didn't want law enforcement to find it stands to reason that you would want to make friends with someone who has these very skills. IMHO.

Missizzy I think we've got it--look at the email address again--the neighbor of three years had the same last name and first initial! I think his neighbor is listing the dog and it makes sense that she would because someone had to watch Cypree all this time. What do you think?

Ooh, you are good. And here I thought I was being tricky. Yes, that must be it. The kids jumping in the truck still bother me, though.

Good catch!!
