MO - Six Mohler family members for child sex crimes, Bates City 2009 #4

I had a real hard time finding anything on the death index & when I finally did I was fused.
I'll try to copy & paste but it's weird that there are several Webb's listed - all with initials only, all on the 15th but in different months and all but one has (PE) for last resident. I use this site at work and don't recall seeing that before. Any idea what PE is or am I forgetting a state ?

Hi Chicana! It looks like the website explains it here:
"The following abbreviations or codes, which appear in some records in the "Last Residence" box, usually in parentheses, are internal codes used by SSA and do not mean anything to researchers. Ignore them."

I've come across an interesting and disturbing bit of info. Another questionable death/possible murder occurred in the Bates City/Odessa area in the late 1980's. Curtis Lee Robinson's body was found on Highway 24 on August 23, 1989 with evidence of torture. The body had also been run over by a tractor trailer rig. No arrests, to my knowledge have ever been made. There was however a report that he had been with friends (including a man named Ed) earlier in the day at a bar. Was there a bar along this stretch of road? I don't know the liquor laws for Bates City/Odessa in the 80s.

Curtis, age 31, worked at a tire repair shop in Odessa and left behind three little daughters and two step-daughters, three brothers and three sisters. He was born in Kansas City, KS but had just moved to Odessa in 1988. He lived between Bates City and Odessa.

Remember, Burrell Sr. owned the Bates City farmhouse in 1989. The Mohler children describe multiple murders around this time. Just throwing this out there. I'd love to see if anyone can find out more info on Curtis.

Third Mohler receives change of venue approval

"One of six Missouri men accused of molesting young relatives two decades ago has been granted a change of venue.

A Lexington County judge on Monday approved moving 54-year-old Burrell Mohler Jr.'s case on several felony abuse charges to Saline County. Mohler's next court date was scheduled for May 3.

Also Monday, the judge scheduled a June 7 court date for Mohler's 48-year-old brother Jared Mohler, who faces three felony counts of rape and other charges...."

FWIW, Clay County's (where I believe 2 trials are scheduled) courthouse is in Liberty, MO which is about 35 miles NW of the Bates City farmhouse. Saline County's courthouse is in Marshall, MO which is about 40 miles NE of he Bates City farmhouse. I really fail to see how these hops over to neighboring counties are going to make that much of a difference in a jury pool. I really hope the Mohlers are not cherry picking judges.

Surely the prosecutors would be on that. Surely.

Still no news on this case? How can that possibly be?

I have no clue, unless there is a gag order we don't know about, or someone has put the lid on it.

January trial set for molestation suspect

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

LEXINGTON (AP) — A January trial date has been set for one of six men accused of molesting young family members more than two decades ago.

Jared Mohler is scheduled for trial Jan. 31, 2011, in Lafayette County Circuit Court. The 49-year-old Columbia man is charged with three counts of rape, one count of sodomy and three counts of using a child in a sexual performance.

He and his brother, 54-year-old Burrell Mohler Jr., appeared in court yesterday. Jared Mohler is free on bond, and Burrell Mohler Jr. remains in custody

I have been methodically going back over the entire Mohler thread (around 80 pages) and taking notes. I think we've probably all forgotten some very important facts. It's going to be very interesting to see how the trials play out. We start with Uncle Darrel in September.

I wanted to mention that I've tried all links which we've posted. I fully understand that not all news articles stay available forever. I do find it interesting, though, that many of the links which mention "additional victims" have disappeared. Several articles about "other jurisdictions" are also gone. I realize this might be the doing of LE as they prepare for trial and I can accept that.

However, something has bothered me greatly. On threads 2 and 3, we all talked quite a bit about the Mormon, Community of Christ, and RLDS's response to these crimes. At the time, Texas Mist, IWannaKnow, and I linked to some very interesting church sponsored websites which described the church's response to ritual abuse over the years. Oddly enough, all those websites are now closed.

One can still access anything posted on former church members' sites or those of survivors of abuse. It saddens me, though, when churches turn away from the light and instead circle the wagons. I respect each of these faiths but I do not understand why the general public needs to be kept from this very important information, especially as it seems so timely now.

As I said, I'm keeping notes. But one of the sites I found so intriguing back in November and December:

http://mormonalliance.org/casereports/volume1/part1/v1p1c06.htm

which outlined, in several chapters, how the church responded to reports of ritual abuse is gone. No doubt it is cached somewhere. We can hope.

Thank you kindly. I've never used this site before. I encourage anyone who might be interested to read Chapter 6 of the Mormon Alliance on Ritual Abuse. It's very interesting how the church handled this horrific problem in the 90s and yet the information seems to have faded away. Be cautious as there are many triggers within these pages.

As I said upthread a few posts, I'm carefully rereading the entire thread and checking links, etc. I found an interesting link I'd forgotten about. I don't believe it was ever posted, however. To some degree, it builds on the link I provided above to Elder Pace's speech of 1990. I came upon it by linking on a related site. Very thought provoking. I think it's certainly worth a look, as we prepare for trial:

http://www.cesnur.org/2001/archive/mi_mormons.htm

A Rumor of Devils: Allegations of Satanic Child Abuse and Mormonism, 1985-1994

"A paper read by Massimo Introvigne at the Annual Conference of The Mormon History Association (MHA) - Park City, Utah, May 21, 1994."

"....While in Catholic settings survivors tell of Black Masses, Mormon survivors report that they have been abused within the context of a "black" version of Mormon temple ceremonies...."

and

"....The perpetrators are also living a dual life. Many are temple recommend holders". Pace explicitely asked the survivors not to provide him the names of the perpetrators, but allowed them to explain what Church office the Satanists held. "Among others -- Pace reported -- there are Young Women leaders, Young Men leaders, bishops, a patriarch, a stake president, temple workers, and members of the Tabernacle Choir...."

and

"....On January 18, 1992 Mormon-owned KSL interviewed another survivor, "Jane", who reported "human sacrifices" and other "horrific things" which had happened in a canyon near Kamas, Utah, when she was a child. "Jane" told the TV reporters that "her father and others raped, tortured and killed people in their worship of Satan". "I know it happened -- "Jane" explained -- because I was forced to commit murder. I committed several sacrifices myself".

much more at link

The forced involvement of victims in murder or the sexual abuse of others is often what silences them forever. They are threatened that, if they tell, they will have to atone for their crimes. Being vulnerable children, the terror silences them. I have a strong feeling, that just like "Jane" quoted above, we are getting ready to hear some very strong survivors overcome the fear of confession of evil.

My heart goes out the Mohler family right now. I think this is going to be very ugly.

A little more digging brings up an intriguing CV for Massimo Introvigne, the Italian man who delivered the above talk in 1994. No one could accuse this scholar of being boring or slothful. He's all over the board and I really would like to know the backstory of his research which was presented to the Mormons and the impact of that paper. More on Introvigne:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massimo_Introvigne

"....In 1987 he presented a paper at the international conference of the Mormon History Association in Oxford, where he started a long-lasting co-operation with Swiss historian Jean-François Mayer and with the Utah lawyer and historian Michael W. Homer, which would eventually lead to the establishment of CESNUR in 1988...."

Note that he's also written about Mormons a number of times. In researching the man, I've noted that he is quite controversial himself. There are a number of conflicting websites which discredit him and his work. All of this feels a bit like watching a cat chasing its tail.

All I want is reasonable, scholarly information concerning the very real problem of organized child sexual abuse within different religious groups. Is that too much to ask?

Thank you, Wintergreen. I especially liked this comment:

"Nicotine is a vice. Adultery is a sin. Child abuse is a crime."

I am so hopeful that the Mohler case will teach us all that appearances can be very deceiving. I am so sick of hearing how "nice" these men were, how they helped others, and how they kept their yards up. Pedophiles simply do not announce their presence any more than a stalking cougar.

Priests and pastors do amazing hard work and help thousands. Boy Scout leaders guide boys who are often needing of male attention. Teachers go the extra mile to help our children learn. Doctors just want to make a child well. Wonderful things can be said about the vast majority of people in these professions. But what do we here at WS know? We know that pedophiles dedicate every fiber of their being to finding, abusing and silencing their victims. They are the consummate predators. They not only have to lure the child into their lair but also have to put on a pretty face so the neighbors, family, and church members suspect nothing. We also know that pedophiles are in every profession, gender, age, sexual orientation, color, religion, and socio-economic group. They are the world's finest "equal opportunity employer".

If neighbors, family, or church members dare to make an allegation, they are shouted down. Shouted down by not only the pedophile but also the rest of the community who would far rather be left to their life of naivete and complacency. How many times have we heard, "Let's just move on and forget the past"? For victims of child sexual abuse, there's no such thing as the abuse being in the past. They live with the repercussions of their abuse every second of their lives.

If there are convictions for the Mohlers, I wish the judges would request a public apology from each who have stepped forward to say these men "could never" and "would never" and have instead cast doubt and blame on the alleged victims and the proverbial "vindictive ex-wife".

I can only imagine the grief and pain this has caused those who have had the courage to come forward. By coming forward, it is likely that this cycle will be stopped. I admire the accusers as I know that disclosures and trials are not a walk in the park. Nothing could be more disruptive in a person's life. But they chose to speak out for closure and other's safety. They chose to shine the light into the dark corners of their past. Silence is by far the "easier" path. Speaking out is messy and hard work.

If there are convictions, does this woman, this former wife, we've heard so much about not have the right to be outraged? Outrage is not vindictiveness. Outrage is righteous anger.

Thank you for that update, Wintergreen. I'd missed that. Does anyone know if Burrell Jr. is still sitting in jail? It seems incongruous to me that he hasn't been able to pull together any help from the 100 or so people who stood up to support him. No one can mortgage their home or procure a loan to get this guy out of jail while waiting 18 months until trial?

It's interesting but many of the cases I'm seeing coming from the KS/MO area seem to take about 18 months from arrest until sentencing. That's a long wait for those wheels to turn. I wonder if any of the perps use the time for any sort of reflection?

I wonder where all those legions of people are who supported Burrell in the beginning?

http://www.fox4kc.com/wdaf-mohlers-burrel-rohland-in-court-121509,0,2996420.story

"A cousin to the Mohlers said that 101 family members met on Thanksgiving and all stand behind the men.

"Support means, 'I'm here for family,'" said DE [EBM]. "If anything is wrong, which I don't believe there is, [inaudible], but that's not what family support is. Family support is to be here and help them through whatever situation they're in....."

Maybe family members, upon reflection and sharing information, have come to the conclusion that both Burrell Jr. and Sr. will best be helped by lots of prayer while they remain in a highly supervised environment.
