The judge ruled that Haefs is incompetent to stand trial at this time. The Missouri Department of Mental Health will be charged with administering medication that may help Haefs understand the killing she’s accused of committing.

I'm hoping that this woman is currently being medicated in a psychiatric hospital and not in jail receiving medication.

Does anyone know if Missouri has a "not guilty be reason of insanity" plea?

There are many reasons people, especially poor people, who have had interactions with the police and the legal system do not turn to police for assistance with mental help issues.

In many places police have little to no training on how to respond to and assist someone having a mental health crisis. In my state of Texas there have been too many instances where someone called police for help with someone in crisis and their loved one ended up dead, shot by police.

There are many states with abysmally inadequate resources to assist poor people with mental health issues and no beds available for those who should be committed.

This case has me thinking about Andrea Yates. Andrea knew what she did was wrong (she called 911 after drowning her children) but felt compelled to murder them due to her postpartum psychosis and other mental illness. Although originally tried and convicted, she received a new trial in 2005. She's currently in a mental hospital in Kerrville, Texas, presumably for the remainder of her life.
