Support grows for Darren Wilson

As the funeral for Michael Brown draws closer, support continues to grow for the officer involved in his shooting.

For the second day in a row a crowd has gathered to rally for Officer Darren Wilson. Supporters held signs showing their support, and people driving past the demonstration on Chippewa honked their horns to show support too.

The group has been building followers. They feel Wilson's side has not been equally portrayed by the media.

Michael Brown Spent Last Weeks Grappling With Problems and Promise

It was 1 a.m. and Michael Brown Jr. called his father, his voice trembling. He had seen something overpowering. In the thick gray clouds that lingered from a passing storm this past June, he made out an angel. And he saw Satan chasing the angel and the angel running into the face of God. Mr. Brown was a prankster, so his father and stepmother chuckled at first.

“No, no, Dad! No!” the elder Mr. Brown remembered his son protesting. “I’m serious.”

And the black teenager from this suburb of St. Louis, who had just graduated from high school, sent his father and stepmother a picture of the sky from his cellphone. “Now I believe,” he told them.

In the weeks afterward, until his shooting death by Darren Wilson, a white police officer, on Aug. 9, they detected a change in him as he spoke seriously about religion and the Bible. He was grappling with life’s mysteries.

Expert: Legal system often gives police benefit of the doubt

Washington University law professor Peter Joy said grand juries tend to give police the benefit of the doubt.

For example, a St. Ann police officer was suspended without pay for pointing a semi-automatic weapon at someone and threatening to kill them. Even though the moment was caught on video, the St. Louis County Prosecutor’s Office said a complaint has yet to be filed. It seems unlikely the officer in question will be charged with a crime.

Michael Brown laid to rest today

Justice was a recurring theme as thousands of mourners packed the mammoth Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church on Monday for the funeral of Michael Brown, a black teen whose fatal shooting following a confrontation with a white police officer set off weeks of sometimes violent protests.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, among the speakers, called for a "fair and impartial investigation" into the shooting.

Friends and family say goodbye at Michael Brown’s funeral

he family of Michael Brown may have been grieving, but they still counseled thousands of mourners Monday during his funeral.

“He did not know how his name would be remembered,” said family member Eric Davis. “But we are here today remembering the name of Michael Brown.”

It was once a common name. Now his is a household name for the teen who was black, unarmed, and 18 years old when a white Ferguson police officer shot him to death on August 9, 2014. Ferguson erupted into violent protests for days.

“But not today,” said family member Ty Pruitt. “Today is for peace, peace and quiet.”

Attorney: New audio reveals pause in gunfire when Michael Brown shot

Could a newly released audio provide more clues on what led up to Michael Brown's shooting death?

The FBI has questioned a man who says he recorded audio of gunfire at the time Brown was shot by Ferguson police on August 9, the man's attorney told CNN.

In the recording, a quick series of shots can be heard, followed by a pause and then another quick succession of shots.

Forensic audio expert Paul Ginsberg analyzed the recording and said he detected at least 10 gunshots -- a cluster of six, followed by four.

For students and parents in Ferguson-Florissant, a chance to move forward

It took a few days before Janice Bugett’s 6-year-old asked the question, and when she did, the little girl’s fear nearly crushed her mother.

“Mommy, am I going to be killed when I go to school?” Jade Bugett asked.

Jade, 6, a student at Cool Valley Elementary, lives a little more than 2 miles from where Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown on Aug. 9. In the days that followed, she saw protesters as she looked out her car window and heard the shouts, “Hands up, don’t shoot!”

Alleged audio of Michael Brown shooting released

An audio recording that allegedly captures the gunshots that killed Michael Brown has been released to CNN.

On the tape is the voice of a Ferguson man talking during a video chat. In the background you can hear what sounds like several gunshots, a pause and then several more gunshots. It’s important to point out that we have not been able to verify its authenticity.

Dr. Baden provided a diagram of the entry wounds, and noted that the six shots produced numerous wounds. Some of the bullets entered and exited several times, including one that left at least five different wounds.

two people familiar with the official county autopsy of Michael Brown said Monday.
The autopsy by St. Louis County chief medical examiner Mary Case, released to state prosecutors late Friday, found that Brown, 18, had six gunshot wounds to the head and chest and was shot from the front, the people said.

One bullet entered and exited Brown several times. That shot struck the teen above the right eyeball, went through his face, left through his jaw and re-entered his collarbone.

It is believed that five of the shots hit Brown on the front of his body.

However Parcells said that the gunshot wound to Brown's forearm appeared to be consistent with someone walking away or putting their arms up in a surrender or defensive manner before adding, 'but we don't know'.

Following the family's press conference on Monday, St Louis County medical examiner Mary Case said Brown had suffered between six and eight gunshot wounds and was shot from the front.

Six bullets struck Brown, Dr. Baden said in a press conference earlier today. Two may have exited and re-entered Brown’s body, he said, resulting in multiple wounds.

SNIP

Prof. Parcells said a wound on Brown’s right arm was “consistent with a witness statement” that Brown was first shot while facing away from Wilson, but he stressed that he and Dr. Baden could not determine conclusively the trajectories of the bullets that hit Brown—or which direction he was moving—when he was shot. The wounds “could be consistent with going forward or going backward,” Dr. Baden said.

Peaceful protests resume in Ferguson

About 100 people marched along the streets of Ferguson Tuesday night to both honor the life of 18-year-old Michael Brown and encourage the community to heal.

After a brief rain delay, the group gathered at the Greater St. Mark's Family Church. The march took them on a three-mile round trip down Chambers Road to the burned out QuikTrip on West Florissant. They returned a short time later.

Organizers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Chapter of 100 Black Men asked for a peaceful march.

Chanting, ‘move cops, get out of the way,’ a small group of protesters pushed past federal security guards on the steps of the Eagleton Courthouse in downtown St. Louis Tuesday, demanding a meeting with the local U.S. Attorney about the Michael Brown Case.

A group of about 100 rallied first at St. Louis City Hall before walking two blocks to the federal court house.

Below are Piaget's witness statements from the first three interviews I saw. I did my best to get her statements word for word, if there are inaccuracies, you have my word they are unintentional. I ask that those who continue to believe the witness accounts or base their belief the cop executed Mike to read her statements and my comments with an open mind. I know in some cases, I nitpicked, as I would expect a lawyer or juror to. I am not averse to being carved up on this forum, so have at it. If moderators feel any part of this violates TOS here, please feel free to adjust accordingly. I hope the formatting works, I have also included links (if they don't work for you, it's probably on your end) to the interviews and some other links below for context. Work is blowing up, as if Ferguson and these threads, and time is not a commodity, I had hoped to start this process days ago. I am way behind on the posts here, so if any of this is redundant, my apologies. I'm also sorry to post on my schedule which likely coincides with the live coverage of the sadness tonight. I have Tiffany's interviews transcribed, but it is far more lengthy and have not been evaluated in this fashion. Plus, I want to see if it's worth the time and effort to continue as things develop. So, with that, here it is.

8/9/14 KMOV interview in street http://fox2now.com/2014/08/09/man-shot-killed-in-ferguson-apartment-complex/

My thoughts: First paragraph, odd word choices marked in bold. Seems to be overselling this, sounds more activist than witness. Refers to they and them as if Wilson represents a group. Second paragraph, guess we know why she sounded more activist and referred to police as a group. Watch the eyes, sounds like she’s repeating talking points she’s heard. Already, racial accusations just hours after the shooting gives pause to whether there is already an angle being played. Two shots after Mike ran, Dorian Johnson said several.

8/11/14 MSNBC interview outside her apartment http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/eyewitness-michael-brown-fatal-shooting-missouri

My thoughts: Repeats compliant, says shot in chest (autopsy showed no chest shots, Johnson’s account also mentioned chest). Timeline issue, question how she could see the same thing (the tussle) as Tiffany given the account below and the one Tiffany gives? Also curious how she sees the EXACT same thing as Tiffany even though she’s on the passenger side of car.

8/13/14 CNN Shared interview with Tiffany Mitchell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=advkpZIuq2U

On whether Piaget was able to get a better look than Tiffany...

My thoughts: Tiffany drove up on the struggle, then pulled out her phone. Piaget says she saw this looking out the window when Tiffany called. Contradictory! Overselling “saw with my own eyes”. How did she see the conflict start?

In response to question of whether Brown was in the car…

My thoughts: Made sure to drive home outside of police car. Said shots when one is all I’ve seen or heard about.

In response to Piaget ever seeing Brown reach for officer’s gun…

My thoughts: She has difficulty seeing from her balcony, she’s on the opposite side of the car, but she knows he was outside of car (which she re-iterates again), and she can see the cop shot his gun carelessly through the glare of his front window? And how does one shoot a neighbor’s building on the opposite side of the car, especially when Johnson said the shot hit Mike? Has anyone seen anything about the bullet removal? The last line sounds like public service announcement.

Adding to Tiffany’s comments wondering why Mike was killed while fleeing…

My thoughts: Overkilled…sounds like she’s being coached to use certain terms for effect. Two, multiple, or several, depending on the witness.

On how far Mike ran…

My thoughts: By my estimation, it was a lot farther from Brown’s body to his hat in the street. Now I don’t expect her to be good with distance estimation, but look at Google Maps and estimate the distance.

On whether the first shot was inside the car…

Could you tell who fired that first shot…

My thoughts: THIS is confusing. You are watching this incident and grabbing your purse and changing window views and yet you give nearly the same account of things as Tiffany? Not to mention the brick wall that blocks nearly half the distance between Mike’s body and where the hat was (hat indicates loosely where the struggle was. Repeats shots again. Johnson said one shot.

Conclusion: I fail to see how this witness has any credibility and doubt seriously if she saw much, if any, of this. She sounds like she is passing along the story she was told. She’s watching the struggle supposedly as she’s talking on her phone, but fails to record the event, at least until it was over. I wonder if she did record it and it happened as the cop said and she deleted. There are way too many things in her statements that discredit her, she’s just not credible. Oh, and by the way, on CNN tonight, she indicated his arms never went up as the adjusted autopsy showed. Also curious why she never mentioned the cars that pulled up and were blocked that Mitchell and Johnson described in various different ways.

Supporting information...

Google maps - Search 2947 Canfield Dr. Ferguson, MO then click street view, gives great perspective when you click around to see the theater of the shooting. Note the brick wall that would block line of site to the middle half of the action area. The truck was approximately at the left driveway, the hat on the other side of the truck and Michaels body was lying straight out from the right brick column of the building. If you look at body, hat, approximate spot where the car would have been perpendicular to the street as Johnson described, you have a pretty good idea of the area this took place. The video in the last interview link gives some perspective to all this, as do some of the others that have been posted (like the oft posted video with the description that matches the cop's friend).

Photo of the hat and SUV (not Wilson's, but one in video - look at angle of truck) - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...shot-dead-unarmed-teenager-Michael-Brown.html

Final thought - Tiffany Mitchell is a much better witness than her employee Piaget, but I think she too is just as impeachable as Piaget and Johnson. I'll also say that I am still not convinced of anything for certain as far as the shooting, I just fail to see the strength of the eyewitness testimony and that, plus a healthy dose of our social past, is the only thing everyone's angst with the cop is based on. Without it, the assumption of racial bias isn't enough to convict the cop, especially when not a single one of us have ever talked to the man or heard or seen him speak. Hard to judge people using clairvoyance.

All IMO to cover that rabbit!

Michael Brown shooting: Legal questions loom

Was a police officer justified in shooting and killing Michael Brown?

That's the question at the heart of the looming legal battles over the controversial case.

What charges could Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson face? What would state and federal authorities have to prove in order to pursue charges? And does the fact that the gunman was a police officer change how the case could play out?

Here's a look at what legal analysts say could happen next.

U.S. government faces high bar charging cop in Ferguson death

http://news.yahoo.com/u-government-faces-high-bar-charging-cop-ferguson-194253536.html

What makes it difficult for the U.S. Justice Department to prosecute local police for criminal civil rights violations, even when a death results, is the high bar of proving an officer's intent to violate civil rights.

Under laws in the United States, criminal charges of murder or manslaughter are most often left to the states, and federal criminal charges typically are brought against local law enforcement as violations of people's civil rights.

“The government has to show that the police officer acted with specific intent to use more force than was reasonably necessary under the circumstances. You can’t prosecute a police officer for making a mistake or even for a lack of judgment,” said William Yeomans, a former acting head of the Civil Rights Division.

Daughter of MLK seeks nonviolent Ferguson response

The youngest child of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. leaned toward the 30 students facing her inside the library at Riverview Gardens High School on Tuesday. Many of them live near the epicenter of the chaos that erupted in Ferguson. It’s why Bernice King chose this school for this discussion.

The students seemed curious about this visitor, whose late father led the marches and protests that they’ve read about in class. But before she arrived, a school district administrator asked for a show of hands of those who thought nonviolent protests and peaceful resistance used during the American civil rights movement remain relevant in light of Ferguson. Only one hand shot up.

How Michael Brown’s mother showed strength long before her son was killed

Whenever I've seen Lesley McSpadden on the news, I've wanted to look away from her pain.

It's the unspoken parental nightmare, of course, burying one's child. But, the details of her loss, which would tap into our country's darkest places, made that grief even harder to fathom.

I watched her a few times on television and read some of her comments in news reports. I don't want to imagine those moments: Getting the phone call. Seeing her son's body on the street. Crying and wanting to rush to your child's side. Kept away for hours, to simply watch him lie on the street and wonder what the hell happened.

Bills for extra law enforcement for Ferguson coming due

Now that the unrest in Ferguson apparently has subsided, the bills soon will come due.

For two weeks, law enforcement agencies from those in small cities all the way to the Missouri Highway Patrol and the state’s National Guard sent officers and tactical equipment to the small suburban town. From gas masks to overtime, the costs are being tallied.

Generally it’s still too early to quantify exactly what the total public cost will be for the extra law enforcement since Michael Brown was fatally shot Aug. 9 — but no one doubts it’s well into the millions.

I'm behind again, but wanted to put this in here for the record and future reference - for anyone to copy/paste when the subject comes up.

As usual, I think we can learn a lot from Parks, not just from what he says, but how he says it or doesn't answer.

(I tend to think this is highly suggestive of MB's having his hand on the top of the gun, and Park's stuttering over "bullet" suggests MB's palm was caught in the slide mech, when the gun went off in the car.)

Anyway...

Regarding MB's hand wound:

From Nancy Grace's interview with Brown Family Attorney, Parks, about the autopsy showing all gunshot wounds came from the front, none at close (a few feet) range.

http://edition.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/1408/18/ng.01.html

(NANCY:) Now, we are also finding out that, according to the autopsy report -- and Daryl Parks with us from Michael Brown`s family. Baden said -- well, the autopsy says all the shots were from the front, Daryl.

D. PARKS: Let me explain to you a few things. Number one, you`re going to notice that there`s an injury to his hand. That particular injury probably came at a close range, you`re going to find out later. Second, when we talk about front to back -- front to back mainly...

GRACE: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait! Let me...

D. PARKS: ... applies to two things...

GRACE: ... let me hear what you`re saying. You`re saying that the gunshot wound to his right hand is at close range, although the autopsy is saying no shots at close range.

D. PARKS: Well, let me explain it like this. It`s a big gash.

GRACE: What?

D. PARKS: It`s a big gash, so as you hear more about it, it`s a big gash on his hand.

GRACE: So it`s not -- are you telling me it`s not a gunshot?

D. PARKS: Now, how that`s -- no, it is a gunshot wound caused by the gun, but a bullet, but it`s a rather large gash in his hand.

GRACE: Well, why do you say it`s at close range?

D. PARKS: Secondly -- well, it`s pretty big and it`s pretty open.

GRACE: That doesn`t mean close range.

D. PARKS: Now, how and when it happened, I`ll leave that to the experts.

Audio captured at time of Michael Brown shooting, company says

A company whose video chat service apparently captured audio of Michael Brown's shooting said Thursday the recording was created at the time the Missouri teenager was killed this month.

The revelation from Glide appears to bolster a man's claim that he inadvertently recorded audio of gunfire at the time a police officer shot and killed the 18-year-old Brown in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson on August 9.

The video was created at 12:02:14 p.m. that day, Glide said. Brown, who was unarmed, was shot by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson shortly after noon.

"A Glide user living nearby was simply using the Glide app on their smartphone exactly as it was designed -- to instantly communicate with a friend through our real-time video texting service. Simultaneously, they also captured audio in the background of the gunshots allegedly fired at Michael Brown," the company said.
