This was back in the early 90's when only murder and drug busts made the paper. The internet was just getting started so I doubt I could find any real evidence. Most people didn't even have cell phones yet. I just remember every afternoon around 5 because I was on my way home from work and you would see the birds landing in the trees then all of a sudden they would start flying in front of the cars. It would go on for about a couple of weeks and then they would go away till the next year. It would be interesting to find out if they are still doing it.

Official results on the Italian birds are due tomorrow, but Rodolfo Ridolfi, a director at the regional zoological institute, said:'We are fairly confident the birds died as a result of massive indigestion brought on by over-eating.

'The most likely cause are discarded sunflower seeds that were found on an industrial estate close to where the bodies of the turtle doves were found.

'In essence the birds were greedy, ate too many of the seeds - which we have found inside them during autopsies - and this brought on the indigestion that led to their death.'

It's weird they are all dying at the same time. I have a feeling we will never know the real reason. We have had fireworks for years, and it never killed that many, people have been feeding turtles and birds for years and they have never died at this magnitude. I think because of the Gulf oil spill and 911 , the ozone disappearing, the atmosphere is full of poison, and it's taking it's toll.

What Caused the Fish Death Still Unknown

The speculation of parasites and bacteria killing fish has been eliminated.

On December 29, a tugboat operator first noted the dead fish near the Roseville community boat ramp. The fish were seen for nearly 20 miles, from the Ozark-Jeta Taylor Lock and Dam near Ozark to near Hartman.

River pollution was also eliminated as a cause of death by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality.

What now guys? They overeating algae?

I haven't read all the way back to the beginning of this thread, so I apologize if this has been discussed. The stuff about the fireworks and overeating is completely ridiculous IMHO!!! I have NO clue as to what is happening, but I was wondering if anyone had discussed the shift in the magnetic poles as being possibly related?? This topic has fascinated me for about 2 years, but after the Arkansas bird story, I read about the Tampa Florida airport having to close the North/South runway until Jan 13, 2011 for "relabelling" due to the shift in the magnetic North pole. Birds use the earth's geomanetic field to navigate. Poor lil fishies make for happy birdlife - Chicago. I buy the explanation for this one.

I have decided a lot of the fish dieoffs are probably weather/cold and/or oil spill related as supposed. I do still think this is indicative of a change in our weather patterns that will bring more deadly storms and a general climate shift over the next decade. I think we have messed up the environment big time and we are about to reap the "rewards" of that.

Scientists have carried out tests to discover why the birds died but Nadia Caselli of the bird association said they appear to have overeaten sunflower seeds, which damage their livers and kidneys. The seeds are mostly waste from a nearby oil factory.

Five of the dead birds were autopsied by the National Veterinary Institute, (Statens veterinärmedicinska anstalt, SVA) and results showed that the birds had died of acute blunt force.
According to Marianne Elvander, zoologist at SVA, the jackdaws were killed by severe internal bleeding. None of the birds showed sign of infection or illness.
"Our assessment is that they weren't carrying any contagious disease, but figuring out exactly what did kill them, other than being some sort of external force, is rather outside our area," said Olov Andersson, SVA's information officer, to TT news agency.

BEEBE, Ark. (KTHV) -- Arkansas State Veterinarian Dr. George Badley tells Today's THV that preliminary test results show thousands of birds died mid-air due to multiple blunt trauma to their vital organs.
"They did have multiple hemorrhages on the inside of them especially around the liver which would mean ah would mean trauma," says Badley.
" Its not that unusual but that many it make you think that its not a disease its something cataclysmic that happened all at one time," says Badley.

Arkansas Game and Fish officials originally estimated 2,000 birds. They now say it was between 4,000 - 5,000.

I’m not even going into the fish right now. Too much information. But, each of these incidents are the same, whether they want to admit it or not. They are all saying these birds died of blunt force trauma. They came to this conclusion because they all have damage to their livers, kidneys and extensive blood clots. No poisons, disease, toxins, etc…..at least that they are testing for. I’ve stated my thoughts before, but now I am going to show why I think what I think.

Notice how the high pressure system is pressing in from the east coast, with the low pressure coming in from the west coast. The temperatures were very different as well, warm and moist over the deep south with freezing rain and snow to the east. Perfect recipe for tornados, as we saw.
Temperatures near Beebe were in the 60s. The temperature at 10:20 when the flock flew was 66 degrees.

Bird Kill over Beebe, Arkansas … Advanced Bird Radar Video Provides Unique Insight

Following the national news stories about the unusual bird kill in Arkansas on New Years Eve, DeTect’s scientists extracted archived radar information from AHAS to determine if the Beebe bird activity as described by local observers was evident in the data. The data (see video below) revealed several interesting facts about this event. First, the blackbird roost near Beebe, Arkansas, was active the day before the event (Dec 30, 2010), with a characteristic roost “ring” leaving the area near sunrise. Birds returning to the roost in the evening often arrive by hopping from tree to tree or power line to power line and are often below the radar beam or in the ground clutter. Birds leaving roosts however, often get higher in the air and leave a characteristic “bloom” signature. The radar data show an interesting “bloom” near Beebe at around 10:20 PM on December 31st. It is very unusual for blackbird species to leave a roost at night even when harassed intentionally by loud noise, pyrotechnics, or even fireworks. It is even more unusual that these birds would continue to stay in the air above the roost area for several hours after they first took flight. Again, the radar data show significant activity in the area for over 6 hours. During this time there is no evidence of significant precipitation near the roost. It is also unlikely that anyone in Beebe, Arkansas, had stockpiled enough fireworks to continue a significant show lasting through the night and into the early morning hours.

P.S.: There is one other possibility, and I may be reading too much into the data here. With the first takeoff, the radar heights (which may or may not be accurate -- sometimes the beam bounces between atmospheric layers or even hits the ground), ranged from 1,500 to 2,500 feet. But then something interesting happened at 4:30Z. What I presume to be a small rain shower passed over and appeared to be drawing some of the birds up into it, as shown on this 3D radar image. FoxNews reported that the birds fell "about a mile long and a half-mile wide" and this shower is about 1.5 by .5 miles.

A bird tucks their heads under their wing to sleep, making their breast stick out even futher than it normally would simply due to the change in their posture.

A bird stuck in a rain storm would get soaked, and depending upon where the rain came from, their breast would be wetter. I say this strictly because of the position in which they sleep. Their wings cover most of the rest of their bodies and their head is under their wing. If a thunderstorm came up from the Gulf and sucked some oil mixed with Corexit into a funnel cloud, or even off the surface (I’ve posted that it has been seen on the surface as recently as August 9, 2010) and dispersed it into the clouds, it could have been carried for miles, and miles and miles on the atmosphere and could explain why these mass deaths are occurring in defined areas rather than widespread, mass destruction. Also why the birds have all died from “blunt trauma”. If the Corexit penetrated their breast while they were sleeping, it would take a few hours to begin to have an effect, and would certainly take time to cause liver and kidney damage and massive blood clotting. I think the Corexit began to affect their nervous systems and they took flight in their confusion and flew around until their bodies wouldn’t allow it anymore and they fell to their deaths. This would explain the bleeding from the mouth, squishy legs, damaged liver and kidneys, extensive blood clotting, shaking and confusion which was reported in the animals that hadn’t died yet, but subsequently did. Also the blue tinge to the turtle doves….they were light colored birds, unlike the blackbirds and have lighter colored beaks usually and hypoxia from massive blood loss could show up there more readily. This web site shows how they were sucked into a shower right around 10:15, and the bird radar shows a mass take off around 10:20.


The Gulf fishermen said the oil/Corexit mixture hurt, just getting on their skin. That could force birds to fly for several hours in the pitch black of night, IMO.

It is the long-term effects of contact with the oil that makes the rehabilitation of oiled birds so painful. Many die from liver and kidney damage. Biologist Silvia Gaus, said, "According to serious studies, the middle-term survival rate of oil-soaked birds is under 1 percent."

And the solvents they contain can break down red blood cells, causing hemorrhaging. A study conducted by Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources concluded that oil in the environment is toxic at 11 PPM (parts per million). Corexit 9500 is toxic at only 2.61 PPM. So in reality, Corexit is approximately four times more toxic than oil. But Corexit 9500 has another precarious characteristic; it’s reaction to warm water. As the water in the Gulf of Mexico heats up, Corexit 9500 goes through a phase transition that changes it from a liquid to a gas, which is readily absorbed by clouds and released as toxic rain.
