Well, in the interest of balanced reporting, I'm gonna post this dissenting opinion. Famed Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson says this is simply hysteria fueled by technology. Says these mass die-offs happen all the time, we just don't know about them. Hmmmmmm.

FACT CHECK: Mass bird, fish deaths occur regularly
(AP) – 14 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — First, the blackbirds fell out of the sky on New Year's Eve in Arkansas. In recent days, wildlife have mysteriously died in big numbers: 2 million fish in the Chesapeake Bay, 150 tons of red tilapia in Vietnam, 40,000 crabs in Britain and other places across the world. Blogs connected the deadly dots, joking about the "aflockalypse" while others saw real signs of something sinister, either biblical or environmental.

The reality, say biologists, is that these mass die-offs happen all the time and usually are unrelated.

Federal records show they happen on average every other day somewhere in North America. Usually, we don't notice them and don't try to link them to each other.

"They generally fly under the radar," said ornithologist John Wiens, chief scientist at the California research institution PRBO Conservation Science.

and

In the past eight months, the USGS has logged 95 mass wildlife die-offs in North America and that's probably a dramatic undercount, White said. The list includes 900 some turkey vultures that seemed to drown and starve in the Florida Keys, 4,300 ducks killed by parasites in Minnesota, 1,500 salamanders done in by a virus in Idaho, 2,000 bats that died of rabies in Texas, and the still mysterious death of 2,750 sea birds in California.

On average, 163 such events are reported to the federal government each year, according to USGS records. And there have been much larger die-offs than the 3,000 blackbirds in Arkansas. Twice in the summer of 1996, more than 100,000 ducks died of botulism in Canada.

Notice the article says North America, but mentions the crabs in Britian and the tilapia in Vietnam.....wonder if he was just trying to make a funny with the "fly under the radar"? Doesn't really make me feel better....

95 die-offs in eight months is about one every 2 and 1/2 days. That would be about right for what we are seeing. Guess they are saying "go back to sleep people, nothing to see here". Maybe they are right. Maybe not. IDK.

We are all connected to each other-we're a community! This video says 2012 Truth Prophecy-I don't know about 2012 being any big date to worry about or not (I just like the message in the video)-we need to pay attention to our community now if it's not too late already! Scratch that-it's never to late-we can't give up!!:twocents:

essies - Thank you button was not nearly enough for posting that video.
:blowkiss: Thank you, thank you, thank you. And the map and that whole post was awesome as well.

Here is a link to past enviromental disasters. If anyone wants to look up other events to see it this is like past events on wildlife. I dont believe this is weather related or related to the end of the world prophecies.
Unless it is a tactic placed by like minded goverments or churches to once again control the world with religious fears or strip away even more civil libery with bio terrorism and terror threats. In that case it could be the end.(this statement is not something I really think I was making light of conspiracy)

Reading the link gold mining struck me interesting do to the bird/ fish deaths.

I can never seem to find the links to these things, but on Fox news this morning ,they said something about the dead birds now turning a blue color. Did anyone else hear that or see it? If someone can find the link,I'd apprececiate it.

  • #166
They are talking about the dove in Italy hockeymom. They have a blue coloration in their mouths. They are thinking poison at this point, which sounds likely IMO.

If its cyanide poisoning, why only that species? Why wouldn't any bird feeding from where they feed,be dropping dead?

Lead story on Megyn Kelly just on and it was about the dead wildlife.Basically nobody can come up with a plausible answer. I think for this to be the lead story is pretty telling that people are concerned.

There was a scientist on Megyn, don't remember his name, but he's a famous oriental guy. Anyway he claims the birds committed "mass suicide". Wow,I'm not sure I'm buying that. Were they depressed about something?

This was all the talk this morning on radio drive time. I wanted to yell at the radio - you people are just now noticing this situation? Many of the theories discussed mirror our own here. I am telling you, this business is odd. Odd - odd - odd.

I agree with Essies, we best take head NOW to what we are doing to our home (planet). Whether all this mass deaths of wildlife is caused by our own stupidity, or not - this should serve as a wake up call about the delicate balance of nature and the fact that our actions do affect our neighbors. We are a global community in that we share this planet. We do not have another to move to if we screw this one up to the point of no return.

I agree tlcox. The article waltzingmatilda and I posted where they say these kind of things happen at this rate EVERY OTHER DAY and have for a very long time, we just didn't hear about it does not make me feel better!! Something is wrong, IMO for that many creatures to be dying every day or even every third day. I think this is like the canary in the coal mine. We need to wake up, today, right now. The video essies posted said it best, the earth will continue to be here, we might not, especially the way we are going. :desert:

essies - I think they have every right to be pi$$ed at us! We screwed up their home too! :furious:

Yeah, hockeymom, they are all just a little depressed about the after Christmas sales, couldn't afford that new lining for the nest what with the recession or the new, padded powerline toe grippers were all out of stock.
If they suggest adding cymbalta or wellbutrin to the bird feed I'm gonna :pullhair: :needdrink: :couch: Never mind, I'm doing that now....:truce:
(ps - I agree about the Italian birds...other birds would get poisoned too if it were cyanide)

I remember in the early 90's when I was living in South Florida and these birds were committing suicide. They would sit in the trees and when a car came along they would dive into the cars, instantly killing themselves. It was a major highway so a lot of people had to use that road. I think they were sparrows. The roads were littered with dead birds. It was awful.

legalmania - could you provide more details so perhaps we could find an article about that event? Compare notes, so to speak? Maybe they came up with a reason for why it was happening. Do you remember how long it went on?

Did they find them hanging from the wires with little ropes? Were their wings slit? Did they have ziploc bags tied around their heads? did they have tiny guns in their mouths?

What was the reason? Was it a hundred sided triangular love affair gone bad? Were they depressed because they weren't able to locate a newly washed car for a long time? Was the fireworks display extremely disappointing? :waitasec:

Is that a joke or is that true?

When I was in high school in 1982 (why did I just admit that) My best friends parents bought him a car;

dscn3052tw9.jpg

They didn't trust him with anything that wouldn't strain to hit 55 miles per hour. Well anyway. On his way to work one day a bird flew down in front of the car and began flapping it's wings frantically flying in front of the car. Before my friend could hit the brake he hit the bird and it went sailing off over the car.

I told him that one bird probably bet another that he could outfly that piece of :censored:. My friend pointed out that the bird lost the bet.

In my old house the whole back of the house was a big window, and sometimes a bird would fly into it,but I never found a dead bird laying there. I seriously don't think birds have the capacity to oft themselves.
