supposedly the fish were one species. A variety called "drum fish".

If this was two separate incidents, that is one doozy of a coinky dink that they happened within a 36 hour period of one another 30 miles apart. I almost wonder if the fish got sick and the birds ate at some dead ones, thus getting sick as well.

Anyone know if redwinged blackbirds and european starlings eat carrion? Are they opportunistic eaters and is my theory even logical?

I don't believe any of this is a "mystery". Following this bird fall (one of many through the years) I came upon a site that said there is a caldera in Arkansas. A caldera is the site of a HUGE volcanic explosion in the past - Yellowstone is a caldera also.

A few years ago Yellowstone had similar odd happening, especially the herbiverous animals keeling over dead. I don't believe it's rocket science to ascertain they died from gases eminating from the ground, especially since Yellowstone Lake had grown a huge bubble in its middle. Gasses, underground gasses were to blame. Maybe this has happened many times in the past, maybe not. This could just be something that happens periodically, or it could be a harbinger of worse to come since I've read Arkansas has a caldera also.

Maybe it's just normal and natural, or maybe everything is alighning for the end of civilization as we now know it. Who knows. There have been many bird falls, and many fish die-offs previous to this. Nothing new under the sun.

you are right on track IMO with your theory. Add to that the knowledge that Arkansas had nearly 500 earthquakes in 2010 compared to like 39 in 2009 and the fact that the New Madrid fault is right in the region. Add also that the New Madrid Fault has long since been thought by experts in the field to be long overdue for another massive earthquake. I suspect mother nature is gearing up to put on one heck of a show in 2011. MOO

carried over here from teh bird and fish thread as I think they are related and here's another possibility

perhaps these small creatures are a signal of what may be coming.

Well, I was thinking similar things last night, until I found out about the 500 blackbirds dead in New Roads LA. No where near New Madrid fault line, and the initial reports are saying no physical trauma. Also the fish kill, outside Ozark AR. Closer to the western border of the state, no where close to that fault line; It ends in Marked Tree, AR. About 100 miles NW of Beebe. Close enough to have effect? Sure. But I can't understand how it could cause blunt trauma to only the breast tissue of the birds. Squishy legs? A dead bird would not put their legs down to catch themselves.....

http://articles.cnn.com/2011-01-02/..._massive-fish-dead-birds-bird-deaths?_s=PM:US

Stephens said fish kills occur every year, but the size of the latest one is unusual, and suggested some sort of disease was to blame.

"The fish kill only affected one species of fish," he said. "If it was from a pollutant, it would have affected all of the fish, not just drum fish."

Ozark is about 125 miles west of the town of Beebe, where game wardens are trying to find out why up to 5,000 blackbirds fell from the sky just before midnight New Year's Eve.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40887450/ns/us_news-environment/
Up to 100,000 fish found dead along Arkansas River
Officials suspect disease, not pollutants, as cause of death

Stephens also provided the estimate of 80,000 to 100,000 dead fish.

The fish were found Thursday by a tugboat operator along a 20-mile stretch of the Arkansas River near the city of Ozark.

FWIW, the fish were found on Thursday, December 30, or Wednesday the 29th, 2010 (I've seen both dates in print). Before the birds started falling.

This is the most recent earthquake activity:

Earthquake 'swarm' rattles Arkansas town and its residents
December 13, 2010|By Dave Alsup, CNN

At first, town officials assumed the current wave of shakes came from work at a gravel company on the outskirts of town.

Ausbrooks says the state Geological Survey has no idea whether the current swarm is a natural or man-made event, but his office is seriously exploring the latter. "We see no relation to the drilling in the area, but we haven't ruled out a connection to the salt water disposal wells," he said.

According to the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission, there are at least a half dozen "disposal wells" within a 500-square-mile zone around Guy. Licensed by the state of Arkansas, disposal wells are a byproduct of the oil and gas industry and are used to inject drilling waste water back into the earth after drilling.

Ausbrooks said drillers inject waste water into the earth at high pressure, and in the area around the town the disposal wells go as deep as 12,000 feet. He points to incidents in Colorado in the 1960s at Rocky Mountain Arsenal, where deep water injection was tied to earthquakes.

Guy is about 44 miles NE of Beebe.

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. — Near her car, a dead bird. A quick walk to her mailbox, another. Scattered across her front yard, a local woman discovered dozens of dead birds.
~
Local 6 checked in with several other fish and wildlife outlets and even some of Sandy's neighbors. No other birds have been discovered or reported.

Video at the link, and yep, they are red-winged blackbirds....

Anyone here from Arkansas?

  • #53
Well, I know for a fact that there's an air force base and army base in Arkansas.
Also, A LOT, and I mean, A LOT of blackbirds. I've never seen the swarms of blackbirds that I saw there...talk about a black cloud flying across the sky!

I read somewhere that this type of bird doesn't normally flock. Don't know if thats true or not.
Found this site. Sounds like its not just in Arkansa or just the U.S.. What the heck is going on?

Herding Cats:
I read in one article that an ornithologist stated they died in mid-flight. The trauma to the bodies did not result from the impact with the ground. Let me find that.

OHHHHHH. Didn't find that article, found this instead:

500 birds found dead in Louisiana

OK, never mind, I found it, other thread:
http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/01/02/arkansas.falling.birds/index.html?hpt=T1

So, now they are saying it could have been from the impact with the ground. But I still say if this was hail, why are there only red-winged black birds and starlings being reported? In two states no less.....that is beyond odd IMO. Did they not get the memo to find a hole to hide in that night? :waitasec: Too many New Year's cocktails??

Yeah, the species specific aspect has me mystified too.

This seems to be species specific though and it would seem that something like that would kill all life in the area.

You should put that in the prediction thread.

I don't think this is a government conspiracy due to the species specific aspect. It also wouldn't make sense to do it in a populated area when they could do it in a very remote area where nobody would come across them.

Here's more on the Louisiana deaths; http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE7034DG20110104

The emu is scared :censored: less to go anywhere near the area.

Alright, I think I recall that one, a bit tongue in cheek if I recall. Haven't checked for any new predictions in a while. Will have to check back in on that one.

In 1812, there was a massive earthquake in New Madrid, Missouri, which is right near the border with Arkansas. It was felt as far away as New York City, Charleston, and Washington, DC. That's about 1000 miles to the East and I'm sure it was felt 1000 miles to the West too but since those states were very scarcely populated in 1812, we don't have any accounts. An earthquake that is felt by everyone from New York to Denver is HUGE. As someone else already mentioned on this thread, Arkansas has already had 500 earthquakes since September/October which is not normal for them. I've read that the New Madrid fault line is overdue and aren't a lot of small earthquakes a bad omen? I'm not saying that the big one is going to happen next month but it seems probable that it will happen in my lifetime. And as someone who lives in a state that borders Missouri, that's kind of worrying! I also doubt that the buildings in this area of the country are built with earthquake precautions like buildings in California are. You always hear talk about the big one that's going to destroy Los Angeles but you never hear about an earthquake in Missouri. The New Madrid fault line isn't publicized much at all.
