A 3-year-old boy was found dead in a Mississippi pond on Friday, leading authorities to charge his mother and her boyfriend with murder in connection with the child’s death, WLBT-TV reports.

Police first began investigating around 9:30 a.m., when a woman called 911 to report that she had encountered a 5-year-old boy at her home. The child, who has special needs and was non-verbal, did not communicate where he lived.

Warren County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded and located the boy’s mother after about an hour of going door to door.

Police allege that the mother, 25-year-old Brooke Mallet, and her boyfriend, 22-year-old John Walker, did not know that the boy had left the home.

“They were not aware that the child was missing,” Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said during a news conference on Friday, according to the Vicksburg Daily News.

During that search, police found the 3-year-old in a pond. Despite administering CPR, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pond was located several hundred yards from the home and across a highway.

Mallet and Walker have been charged with murder and are being held without bond. However, Pace said the charge does not mean that the pair intended to kill the boy, but rather that their alleged failure to act caused the death.

I'm confused.

Did he walk away from the womans door and she didn't follow him? I'm not blaming the neighbor in any way I'm just trying to understand how he went from his home, to the neighbors and then to the pond?

And another sweet and perfect little one is just...gone. So glad the 5 y/o is out of that house. SMH
(I can just see that little 3 y/o walking to and crossing the street to get to that pond -- yeah, that's some story, huh?) I guess it was the best explanation that the "parents" could render. So glad they have been charged with murder. <sigh> and SMH. A precious life -- a 3 y/o is a lot of work, yes, but at that age, they're so much fun. Their little brains are soaking things in, making words, laughing, deciding what foods they do and don't like, playing with toys, easy to please and to laugh, almost everything can be an adventure, and on & on & on.
A miracle that these two, if indeed guilty, certainly did not deserve.
And now another little soul flies up. Too soon, too soon. Grrrrr.

It sounds like there were 2 children who wandered away. The 5 yr old ended up at a neighbor's, the 3 yr old was found by LE in the pond. Awful.

Thank you. I believe your correct. I need another cup of coffee. RIP sweet little one.
I noticed LE refered to the adults as the "mother and the mother's boyfriend."
I'm assumming that means they are not married and the boyfriend may not be the biological father??? Totally JMO on my part.

I dunno ,hard to guess- because lots of couples do not get married today . It does not work out to a couples benefit in todays world in all places of society . I know lots of couples who have been together for years and most of them married as their together children got older. Like 10 to 16 years. Sometimes they are waiting for papers to drop or probation or this or that. Single for the pregnancy and birth for sure on paper work. Born Free ! An all that.

Lots of photos of the happy little couple on both their FB pages dating back to Feb. 2022. No clue is he is the father of either child based on SM but I suspect he is not.
