"In December 1993, the remains of a female infant were discovered by a motorist on the side of Interstate 10 in Gulfport, Mississippi, near the Lorraine Road exit. Located on the Gulf coast, Gulfport is the county seat of Harrison County, a title that the city shares with nearby Biloxi. When the infant was discovered, her umbilical cord was still attached. It was estimated that the baby was born the day prior to her discovery and that she had been born alive. The baby’s manner of death was ruled a homicide.''

''This investigation led Harrison County investigators to a woman who is now believed to be the mother of "Mary Josephine". ''

"Investigators were granted a search warrant for DNA comparison on who they believed to be the mother of the child.
On October 11, 2024, investigators attempted to contact the possible mother of Mary Josephine in Gautier.
Subsequently, officials made their way into the possible mother’s home, where she was found dead by suicide.
While inside the home, investigators found a letter in which the woman claimed to be the mother of Mary Josephine.

Sheriff Matt Haley would like to thank Bradford O’Keefe Funeral Home, Coroner Brian Switzer, Floral Hills Memorial Garden Cemetery, Harrison County District Attorney’s Office, MS State Medical Examiner’s Office,
Gautier Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and Othram Inc. for their assistance in this case.''
'This is a developing story, and Mary Josephine’s true identity has not yet been released. Stay tuned to WXXV News 25 as we work to gather more information on the case.'

There are so many desperate women who felt they had no other choice and have been haunted by this for the rest of their lives. I have a lot of sympathy for women like this, though it seems I'm very much in the minority. I can't imagine the kind of terrible, desperate situation a woman would have to be in to do something like this. Yes, some of these women don't seem to care. But I think most live with immense guilt.

This is the second case I've seen where a woman who has done this has taken their own life, though with the other case (also Othram I think? A university student) took her life many years before she was identified as the mother.

Reading your post makes me sad.
I'm in that minority with you, sometimes.

I don't remember.... were there "safe havens" for babies back in 1993. I do believe that did start earlier, but not certain.

When I see a cold case being solved, and they can still make an arrest, I always feel just so grateful for the new technologies. And I have often stated, I am glad many of these people are shakin in their boots now-a-days...
but..
It does feel different thinking about a great number of women who might all be shakin in their boots..... Maybe there should be some partial-clemency program out there...

I dunno... just rambling cause its sad.
