For nearly three years, the family and friends of Jermain Charlo have sought answers about what happened to the young mother of two since she disappeared in the spring of 2018 after turning a corner off an alley in downtown Missoula, Montana. While they've encountered familiar obstacles with local investigators, renewed hope is emerging after a podcast investigating her case has received national attention and the Biden administration has launched a unit to tackle the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women across the country.

In the podcast, “Stolen: The Search for Jermain,” which just wrapped up its eight-episode run, reporter Connie Walker headed to Montana seeking answers about Charlo and why she abruptly vanished on June 15, 2018. Walker, a Cree woman from Saskatchewan, says she sees the details of the young mother's life, the violence she endured and the response to her disappearance as reflective of both Indigenous life and an example of the scourge that’s been smoldering in North America for generations.

“This conversation is about Indigenous women and girls, but it's really a window into a bigger understanding of what Indigenous realities are and what Indigenous people are experiencing,” she told Oxygen.com in an interview this week.

The case has seen widespread attention with the recent podcast Stolen: The Search for Jermain, and increased pressure to find answers.

“She can't speak for herself anymore and so it's important that we get this resolved. I never imagined it would be unresolved three years later when I started this case back in June of 2018,” Baker continued.

We will have more on that conversation as well as a follow-up interview with journalist Connie Walker who covered the story extensively in a podcast later this week.

An Indictment filed July 28 states DeFrance was convicted of a misdemeanor crime of violence in 2013. The indictment indicates in June and October of 2018, DeFrance violated the terms of that conviction by knowingly possessing firearms and ammunition.

In May of 2013, DeFrance pleaded guilty to a Partner or Family Member Assault. In court documents from that incident, DeFrance wrote, "I caused bodily injury to my girlfriend.” At the time his girlfriend was Jermain Charlo. He also wrote, “loss of firearms rights,” as a consequence of a guilty plea.

Judge Kathleen DeSoto released DeFrance on conditions he appears at an August 11 pre-trial conference, not commit any offense, and agree to a DNA sample.

A look at the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women featured in Dateline NBC’s Missing in America and Cold Case Spotlight

Jermain “Liz” Morigeau, also known by the name Jermain Charlo, was last seen in the early morning hours of June 16, 2018 in Missoula, Montana.

Detective Guy Baker with the Missoula Police Department told Dateline in 2018 that the 23-year-old had been seen with an acquaintance she knew very well, who dropped her off in the vicinity of Orange and South 5th Street between midnight and 1 a.m., in the general area where she lived. The detective declined to name the acquaintance, who among others has been questioned, to protect the integrity of the investigation.

“There’s a couple different investigative aspects we are looking at,” Detective Baker told Dateline at the time. “I believe she is the victim of a criminal act. I don’t know if it’s homicide, sex trafficking, or kidnapping. But aspects of the investigation have led us to believe those are the options.”

Jermain is Native American and described as being 5’9” and weighing about 130 lbs. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt with a brown Under Armour sweatshirt, cowboy boots, and a baseball cap with three trees on it.

If you have any information on Jermain’s whereabouts, call the Missoula Police Department at 406-552-6300.

Michael DeFrance has pleaded not guilty to the charge of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. The charges stem from a 2013 assault involving Charlo.

At a hearing on Monday, DeFrance's court-appointed attorney Michael Donahoe requested the Oct. 4, 2021, trial date be continued to allow for the filing of DeFrance's third motion to dismiss the federal charges.

Donahoe said the third motion would be filed by Monday, Sept. 20.

Authorities have not brought forward charges connecting DeFrance to Charlo’s disappearance at this time.

Jermain Morigeau, who also goes by Liz, was last seen in Missoula, Montana between midnight and 1:00 a.m. on June 16, 2018. She’d gone out to three bars with a friend that night. Police told Dateline the person with whom Jermain was last seen said “he had dropped her off at a location and last saw her walking into the darkness.” Authorities declined to comment on the specifics of the location where Jermain was last seen, but said it was in the “general vicinity” of where she lives. Since Jermain disappeared, authorities say they have conducted multiple ground searches and questioned about a dozen people, including the person with whom she was last seen. In November 2022, Detective Guy Baker told Dateline that the Missoula Police Department is still investigating Jermain’s disappearance and that he is the detective on her case. "The case is still actively being investigated nearly four and a half years later and has never been a closed case. I’ve followed up on numerous leads, conducted additional searches and have submitted evidence to the State of Montana Department of Justice Crime Lab for analysis in 2022.” No arrests have been made in reference to her case. Jermain is described as being 5’9”, and weighing about 130 lbs. If you have any information, please call Det. Baker at 406-552-6284 or the Missoula Police Department at 406-552-6301.

Prosecutors charged Michael DeFrancewith crimes relating to owning firearms when he was not legally allowed to, based on a previous conviction of Partner/Family Member Assault.

He was convicted in 2013 of assaulting his then-girlfriend, Jermain Charlo.

Charlo has been missing for nearly five years although these charges do not relate to her disappearance. DeFrance also faced charges for lying about his status when purchasing firearms from a Missoula pawn store.

Jermain Charlo has still not been found. Today is National MMIWG awareness day and it made me think of a few MMIW cases I know that I have followed. Jermain's family has worked hard to keep her story out there. I hope they are able to bring her home one day.

"Sentencing was set for Sept. 21. DeFrance was released pending further proceedings."

The firearms case against DeFrance came about during the investigation into Charlo’s disappearance although he has not been named a suspect in that case.

"It's not exactly the victory that we wanted. Just this smallest little bit of justice,” said Jermain Charlo’s aunt Valenda Underwood. “I'm happy that he has to go away and I'm hoping that will still be in place with the appeal. But it's something for right now."

The government further alleged that in May 2013, DeFrance was sentenced for partner or family member assault on Jermain Charlo in Sanders County. DeFrance signed a waiver of rights form in which he acknowledged his rights, which included – on a list of possible consequences of pleading guilty – the loss of firearms rights.

The same form contained space for DeFrance to explain the basis for his guilty plea, and his form stated, “On 4-14-2013, in Sanders County I caused bodily injury to my girlfriend.”

Now, six years after she disappeared, the CBS program 48 Hours will feature never-before-seen images of the missing woman in “Where is Jermain Charlo?” to be broadcast on Saturday, October 12 at 9 p.m. on KPAX.

As part of 48 Hours’ reporting, the Missoula Police Department released security camera footage to help generate leads.

In the video, Charlo is seen outside the Badlander Bar, talking to MD, her ex and the father of her two children. DeFrance told investigators Charlo left her phone in his car, and he threw it away. He has not been named a suspect.
