Found Deceased MT - Katelynn Berry, 26, last seen @ home, suspicious, Sidney, 21 Dec 2021 *Reward*

I still wonder how she wasn't seen in previous searches. I know they said they weren't done in that area before, but that's so close to home, I don't understand why that area wasn't searched to begin with.
About 36 steps into the field. I think when the weather was still nice the 22nd through 24th of December she would have been easy to find if anyone thought something was seriously wrong. She was a very small young lady though and if the grass in that field was 8 or 9 inches or taller and depending on the clothing she was wearing those factors could have acted like camouflage. It is just such a tragedy that her life ended so young and that her parents probably had been worried sick about their daughter. Just a deep sadness for all involved. Pray for them!

Yes, you would think they would have started from her apt and worked their way out on previous searches. 1100 ft in all directions just isn't that far.

I'm still waiting for the COD. Was it hypothermia or something else? And how about the MOD? It wasn't natural, so was it accident, suicide, homicide, or undetermined?
Apollo, how do we know it was not natural and natural do you mean a heart attack or stroke or something of that nature? Get me up to speed

Yes, if someone dies of a heart attack, the cause of death would be a heart attack and the manner of death would be a natural death.

It's highly unusual for a 26 yr old to die a natural death unless they have an underlying medical condition.

If someone is out on the lake, their boat turns over and they drown, the cause of death would be drowning and the manner of death would be accidental.

It seems to me if someone dies from an overdose as a result of taking and illicit drug, the person who provided the drug is charged with involuntary manslaughter and it comes under the classification of homicide. Fentanyl slows or stops breathing so the brain doesn't get oxygen. If you pass out in a field from lack of oxygen to your brain, and die from the cold--hypothemia, the cause of death would probably be hypothermia secondary to hypoxia (lack of oxygen) caused by an overdose. (The lack of oxygen didn't kill you---you just passed out because of it. If you hadn't passed out, you wouldn't have died of hypothermia)

The Heavy article is poorly worded and has some information the NBC News article doesn't.

So her dad was in her apartment on the 23rd and 24th and she wasn't there and he called her phone and didn't hear it, then after checking with her friends and no one had seen her he decided to contact the police on the 31st. Her phone pinged at her apartment on the 29th (still with a charge) and was located at her apartment some time after that and an indeterminate text was sent out from it on the 30th? (do we have an original source on that other than Heavy?)

Assuming all this is accurate, by my calculations she must have been with some as yet unidentified person for some amount of time before she was reported missing. I would expect it was a secret boyfriend who she was then either killed by and physically dumped or who triggered her to become mentally unstable enough to go out and freeze.

I lived down the street, I didn't know her. When I first heard her reported missing, it seemed pretty casual like "she's missing, but she's done this before so maybe it's nothing", plus she's an adult... So I doubt there was anyone out searching the fields, just keeping watch for her in public places.

There's only a handful of houses in the immediate area, and it's pretty quiet. There aren't many people who walk to Town Pump - the speed limit going past is 55. Depending on where in the field she was found, it's really easy to not see far in the grass. There are far too many stories of people going missing out here, and being found a very short distance from where they were last seen - not always under suspicious circumstances, weather usually has some role. It was warm until Christmas day, it went from 40's to around 0. There was snow on the ground but not a ton, we got some on Christmas and since.

The family lives behind Town Pump. There's a large parking lot where semis park, then long grass. There is a slope down away from the pavement to gravity drain water away from the building. Most semis park on the south east side of the truck stop, backed into spaces facing away from her house.

Thank you so much a picture surely is worth a thousand questions, ha. So she was 90ft. off the road which is about 36 steps. Her father said there was no snow on the ground until Christmas. Just from my own experience my driveway is 35ft long. The side of my home is 60 ft long with my covered patio another 15 ft long. I stood on that patio and could see the street beyond my driveway. It seems like when she was reported missing, people in that area would have been more curious and looking around, unless it is mostly industrial, or people were already gone for Christmas or just went and returned from work in the dark. I wonder how many times that family drove that rode in their search for her. Does anyone know the approximate distance of 349r in that general vicinity? Again, thank you so much.

The Berry property is directly across the street from the house with the pool. She would not need to be on anyone's property until she entered the field. In the above photo, the green area to the left of Katelynn's upper arm, is the field in question. Co Road 123 is the north border of the field. The left or west side border is 349R. Ninety feet from 349R and into the field, from what the reporter said, is where the remains were.
That is an agricultural sprinkler system company across the street from the field, she could have walked past three other houses on 349R. I promise this will be my last post to do with the location.

So what's the general feeling around town as to what happened, if you don't mind my asking. I'm sure everyone knows by now even though nothing official has been released.

I moved to a neighboring town - but it still impacts the surrounding communities. Small towns sure like their gossip. We all want to know what happened... The town still hasn't healed from the kidnapping and murder of teacher Sherry Arnold in January 2012.

You have to wonder if someone sitting in a vehicle saw her come through the gate and walk to the store and stopped her on her way back and she never made it back home, which would explain the open gate her dad saw. And if I was just running next door to grab something from the gas station, I don't know if I'd take my phone and everything with me? I guess it depends on if I was expecting someone to contact me and if my pants had pockets.

There isn't really any wildlife around there that would attack people. Not with all the livestock nearby. No bears, no wolves, just coyotes, foxes, badgers and maybe if someone's dogs got loose or something.

I don't know if this info matters to anyone, but the truck stop also has a stand alone casino next to it, on the north side of the parking lot, and a liquor store inside the convenience store. I hope law enforcement can find more clues but I imagine most security cameras are focused at the gas pumps and inside, IF they're operating.

There is no video of her at the Town Pump during any timeframe relevant to this case. The gas station/store is to the west of her house, the remains were found in the field to the east of her house.

The medical examiner may have ordered toxicology. I don't know if they have their own lab but I've seen cases where toxicology results took months. MOO

Oooooooh, THAT side. That's really weird. I just watched the video, yeah the reporter is standing on the bend on 349r and points it down the access road for a second. And now I have MORE questions...

I think you have it right but the reporter is on the farm access road, he pans the field, north in front of him, then towards 349R, then to the line of trees, west, in the direction of the Berry property. See the other posts for more descriptions of the location, just a couple of pages back.

I lived there. I've walked this road.

Human remains identified as that of Katelynn Berry

"A statement released by Richland County Sheriff John Dynneson on Friday morning confirms the body found during last Thursday’s search was in fact that of missing 27-year-old Katelynn Berry.

Dynneson stated, “This morning I received confirmation that the remains recovered during the ground search have been positively identified as Katelynn Berry. We continue to investigate until we have a Medical Examiner’s report reference the Manner and Cause of Death.”

We all already knew, but now it's official.
