Well, I will say, without any doubt in my mind, that this was a suicide.

Unfortunately, in cases of suicide, information often dries up.

The family doesn't want to admit it and often won't even accept it.

And LE seems very reluctant to talk about suicide as well. Look at the Jess1ca Rowe case. Not only have they not released a manner of death, but they won't even release a cause of death!

Was checking to see if there were any updates on this case. I'm surprised there really has been nothing. I'm still leaning towards suicide or a staged situation where she didn't intend to die but mistakenly thought an abdomen shot would not be fatal and/or the police would find her in time.

Just wanted to reply to a couple of things.

First, as a somewhat frequent reader of the Daily Mail, I can say that it's been my experience that they very often use the word 'floor' when we would use 'ground'. That's always stood out to me because, as an American, I use 'floor' to refer to surfaces inside a building, but 'ground' for outside surfaces.

I'm not sure if it's a British thing, or what, but, I have read many articles on the DM where indoor and outdoor surfaces alike are all referred to as a 'floor'. So, I wouldn't really read anything into the mention of 'blood on the floor' in the DM. They almost certainly mean blood on the ground, as has been reported from pretty much the beginning.

Secondly, the trunk issue. Some have wondered about how Rita could have closed herself in the trunk, especially with the keys left in the ignition. While I certainly think it's possible that she popped the trunk from the front of the car and left the keys in the ignition then walked around to the back and climbed in/slammed the trunk; keep in mind that, for years, most cars have had pull-down backseats that allow direct access to the trunk. So, it would be very easy to leave the keys in the ignition, lock the doors, crawl into the backseat, pull the seat down, climb into the trunk and pull the seat closed behind you.

So, bearing that in mind, Rita putting herself in the trunk is very doable and possible. JMO.

Regarding floor/ground, I have also noticed that mix-up when speaking to non-Americans.

I live in a very diverse neighborhood where not everyone speaks English as a first language. I notice my neighbors saying "floor" when referring to "ground." (I have a few neighbors from England, but the floor/ground distinction hasn't come up in conversation with them.)

I recall as a new mom, my neighbors asked me if my kids wanted to join their kids playing "in the street." I said, "No!" But what they meant was that the kids were playing on the sidewalk. LOL. We joined them with a box of chalk and some bubbles....not by running in traffic.

And, in general, DM messes up details all the time. Even if the English don't use "floor" for "ground," I can easily imagine DM not paying attention when reporting.

it would be okay if a suicide happened and the cause of death never released to save the family and friends some grace..

..but this was a police pursuit...this took up the time of at least 3 police agencies....this was a shooting done in public....there has been a good deal of public time and effort put into it.....

I think the public deserves to know what caused the death.....

Still waiting for lab results? Wow, it's been MONTHS.

'Slow lab results' may just mean the tests are not conclusive to state for sure, and they will be looking for additional evidence. I've also got a hunch that in these circumstances, authorities drop hints and give people lots of time to absorb the information so that they won't be too shocked, but will be more accepting and relieved when a final cause of death is announced. Also, by that point, they hope the media/public interest will have faded and it won't get big news coverage. I think it's about being compassionate towards the family.

Oh, boy you are in for fun read. Suicide was never ruled out, AFAIK. The mystery is why they continue to investigate, but have no suspects, and why her family has still not been able to have a funeral (they had a memorial without a body I believe). I guess the tests are not complete. Seems strange to draw a suicide investigation out this long. JMO. I'm not 100% convinced of suicide, though many on this thread will argue it has to be suicide. I'm open to other possibilities. Everyone thought suicide in the case of Elizabeth Hock who died on the roof of Home Depot as well (I even thought EH was as suicide myself) and the final ruling just came in from the ME as an accidental death, not suicide. I'm not say Rita died accidentally, but I guess all we can do is wait for the final word from LE at this point.

I think you're right - they have not said it was suicide in so many words, but it is implied in what has been said. There is such a stigma attached to suicide - I feel so sad for those to whom it seems the only option that I don't judge them any differently than those who die accidentally or at the hands of others. I hope she is at peace and that her family can find peace, as well.

When i first read about Merilee's disappearance it sounded like her home had been ransacked but not so sure about that now.

I'm still baffled over Rita's case.

so I guess that there was no man using Rita's cc in Ritzville Wa....I hope the cops have determined absolutely for sure that it was her pumping her own gas....

anyway, if it is suicide, I suspect that Rita, who had been visiting her sick mother in Helena, and was on her way home, had an argument with her husband and it made her so upset she turned around and was going to go back to Helena to visit some more.....in reality, she probably just told her husband to "go to hell" in some way and was "going to show him".....the whole thing got strung out and I'll bet she felt she had to "do something" and that "something" was a suicide...

maybe she wanted to be dead but wanted insurance money for her dtr...

very sad case and I wish nothing but the best for the family and especially her dtr......no one knows the trouble others have, because we all keep secrets and disappointments to ourselves......May God bless Rita and her family...

Both cases are equally odd & sad. I'm leaning toward suicide in Rita's case, while Merrilee's case seems like obvious foul play.

I can't get my head around Rita's case. Why on earth would someone fake an abduction with a distraught phonecall and then commit suicide? Why put your family through that? Unless she really hated her family and was trying to punish them for something?
