Circumstances of Disappearance:
Gronewold was last seen on the Kootenay River between Troy and Libby, Montana on August 7, 1966. He has never been seen again. At the time of his disappearance, Gronewold was employed for the summer with the National Forestry Service at the ranger station near Troy, Montana. He and a couple of friends from the station were floating down the river in inner tubes when they hit rough water. Gronewold was flipped out of his inner tube and came to the surface twice and then disappeared. His friends were unable to reach him. Despite searches of the area, he was never located.

<<Thomas attended Carthage High School where he participated in football, baseball, chorus, and student council. He was awarded the S.A.R. good citizen award.

After graduating from High School in 1965, Tom attended NE Missouri State College for a year. He then took a summer job with the Forest Service in Troy, MT. While out water rafting, with a few friends, he fell off the raft and didn't surface. Tom was to have attended NE Mo. State College for his 2nd year. He hadn't decided on a major but was interested in music.>>
