MO Mushroom hunter wanders upon woman’s body — but Missouri police can’t find her family

The body of a woman discovered by a mushroom hunter in Missouri has been identified, officials say.

But police can’t find her family.

On April 10, the mushroom hunter found human remains in a wooded area of Branson near state Highway 248 and Gretna Road, officials say.

Though her cause of death hasn’t been determined, the coroner and a dental expert identified the woman Friday as Deborah Brown. Born in 1958, Brown previously lived in Illinois and may have moved to Missouri in 2014, officials say.

The last time Brown was seen alive may have been in 2017, officials say.


Now police need help finding Brown’s family to notify them of her death.

An article mentions dentals -- one of the Deborah Brown lsiting for Illinois was Scott AFB. Certainly dental records if Ms. Brown served:

Found an entry in an on-line guestbook for a gentleman's obituary, dated 2014, indicating Mountain View, MO as Ms. Brown's location, not enough information to know if this is related.

The family of a woman whose body was discovered by a mushroom hunter in Missouri has been found, officials say.

On Tuesday, Branson police said they found a distant family member to Brown with the help of a Facebook post shared 2,400 times, reaching over 170,000 people.

“The response from our community, as well as people across the country, was great,” Branson Police Chief Jeff Matthews said in a news release. “Thank you to everyone who helped us with this. It was a true community effort to bring closure to Deborah Brown’s family.”

Woman's remains found in Branson identified with help from forensic odontologist, coroner says

A woman’s remains were found in Branson, and although she has been identified, the investigation into her death continues
After recovering Brown’s remains, authorities had to turn to a forensic odontologist, or someone who specializes in identifying human remains that cannot be identified using face recognition, fingerprints or other means, explained Taney County Coroner Tony Mullen.

This process led to them finding medical records tied to a CT scan — computed tomography — that showed the woman’s teeth, and Brown was positively identified.

Due to what little information the forensics team could gather from the remains, the next hurdle was trying to find next of kin, Mullen said in an interview with the News-Leader.

“We have not located a whole lot yet,” Mullen said. “We found some distant relatives and we believe that’s all we’re going to find.”
