Small sample but to answer my own question I looked at the current DNA Doe Project active cases. The median for cM of top match is roughly 67.5

Possibly dumb question on my part, but can anyone explain what cM and other abbreviations in the Active Cases spreadsheet mean? Or point me to a website that explains it? I don’t know much at all about DNA analysis.

It's essentially the amount of DNA that matches up with potential relatives, the higher the number, the closer relative it is. I'm guessing that their DNA will probably be hovering between 30cM-200cM based on other cases, but who knows.

May be there won’t be any update today :( usually this time there is an update or a note that update is coming later today.

  • #384
The sheet now says “update in progress 9:30 Sep 8”

Update still in progress but empty columns for the Sumter Does have just been added to the chart!

Yup, now says "Update in Progress 10:00 Sept 8 (Mountain time) Checking for new or solved cases..."

I'm not feeling confident that the Sumter Does will be added to the chart today... empty columns have been added for Bedford NH Doe, Grant County Doe, Live Oak Doe, the Green River Killer Does, Reservation Rd Doe and Van Buren County Doe but no sign of Sumter.
Now they have been added. I wonder what checking for solved cases mean? There were no announcements so far...

Lol I updated my comment just as you responded... yep, really happy they've just been added!

Now the spreadsheet says "Next Update 21 September 2020. New case #'s will be updated later this week."

So I guess we will know the # of matches for the Sumter Does later this week but not the CM of matches

''centiMorgans (cM)

A centiMorgan (cM) is a unit of measure for DNA. Your total shared cM tells you how much DNA you share with another match. In general, the more DNA you share with a match, the higher the cM number will be and the more closely related you are.''

To elaborate, the measurement of shared DNA, in centiMorgans (cM) can range anywhere from 0 to about 3500.

The following are approximations, and actual results might vary.

3500 centimorgans indicate either a match to one's self, identical twins, or a parent-child. No other options are possible if you come up with a reading that high.
Full siblings will ordinarily come up around 2700, and anything in that vicinity is almost definitely a full-sibling relationship.
Half-Siblings or Grandparent/Grandchild will ordinarily be around 1800
First cousins around 850
Second Cousins around 250
Third, Fourth, and Fifth cousins generally come in less than 100

Update in progress! They have added numbers for Bedford Jane Doe and Bones 10 Jane Doe. Our Sumter does should be up shortly

  • #393
Unfortunately, no close match for Jock Doe - top match is 43.4 cM

  • #394
Top match for Jane is 74.8 cM

Not to bad of a start ....

Looks like Jane will be their best chance to identify - there is a possible third cousin, going by those CM’s.

Omg I'm DYING to see a pie chart of their ethnic backgrounds. This is all so exciting! Really surreal to think we could be getting so close to knowing something about them after so many years. Thank you for updating DDP, we know you all work so hard <3

edit: Just saw the paragraph above the chart from the volunteer who updates it. I feel so badly that this forum put extra pressure on her! I know we all have so much respect for the person who updates the chart every other week & probably has so many other responsibilities.

Interesting lengthy tag on top of the file today. If conversation here yesterday prompted that paragraph, it was well worth it. I've had that type of thing many times previously, although not related to DNA, when mention of situational unawareness prompts a third party to react.

Nobody was suggesting that any case holds more significance than another. We realize every one is important to DNA Doe Project. When I worked at newspapers decades ago I often had considerably more interest in a page 12 story than a top of page 1 story. But that hardly meant I could ignore the situational variables converging from all directions. The editor wanted all emphasis on the top story. That's the news people were awaiting.

Besides, the simple reality of two Does and not one in this case sets it apart from norm, even if everything else had been equal.

That 67.5 median held up because we've got Jane over at 74.8 and Jock under at 43.4

BTW, I took a quick look at the total matches category, just for the heck of it. Looks like the median number there is somewhere between 497 and 794. Difficult to pinpoint more specifically because there is nothing between those two numbers in the current active list. Both Sumter Does are slightly over 1000.

Yep, I know that the admixture (forgot that's what it's called!) doesn't tells us anything about their background (like the country they were from) for certain, but I think all of us just crave any information we can get about these two. Just expressing a wish, I know DDP is so busy and they can't entertain all of our wishes, of course! And every Doe is of equal importance at the end of the day :) I'm just happy we know a bit about their cM numbers for now.

And again, thank you to the volunteer who runs the chart, for the lovely update
