There is not a set amount of grief that individuals feel. Yes there is grief before the death but there is also enormous grief after the loss/ death with the finality of it all. Everyone experiences death in different ways so to make assumptions is difficult at best.
Anticipatory Grief and Grief after Loss - are two separate processes.
The sheriff deserves Grace and condolences.

I would need more facts on this relationship. For example, my brother and I dont speak. My mother and her sister do t speak. My mother in law and her brother dont speak. Sometimes, many families are torn apart when a parent passes and siblings stop speaking due to lots of resentment. So you simply cant assume the guy is grieving. Im not saying he isnt, im saying you guys are baking in an assumption and I dont have e the backstory.
